I have been living in Sri Lanka with my Sri Lankan wife since 2001. Before that we lived in rural County Cork and before that in London.
I have been writing for Lanka Monthly Digest since 2007 and now contribute two columns every month. I also feature on the back page of its sister magazine, Living. They have also launched a Sinhala-language magazine called Vyápárika Handa, which regularly features translations of my articles.
My regular contributions on Sri Lanka to Le Monde diplomatique have been widely syndicated and appeared on websites and newspapers all over the world, including the New York Times, the International Herald Tribune and The Scotsman. One Diplo reader comments: “I love reading Padraig Colman’s article every month. It is nice to read an intelligent article about Sri Lanka in western media once in a while. You are one of the few journalists I know that can report on complex issues with amazing perspective. Reminds me of Joe Schlesinger, great journalist from Canadian journalist from CBC.”
An article on Sri Lanka for The Agonist was described by Charles J Brown, Washington Director at the Institute for International Law and Human Rights as “one of the best descriptions of what's going on in Sri Lanka that I've seen anywhere in the media”.
My articles have appeared in all the Sri Lankan English-language newspapers. Since August 2010, I have been writing weekly articles for Lakbima News. I am about to start writing a weekly column for the Sunday Island.
I have contributed regularly to Serendib, the in-flight magazine of Sri Lankan airlines and had articles accepted by Travel Sri Lanka and Adoh.
