I was trained as an economist, having graduated from University of Illinois (UIUC) in 1959, began studies for the PhD degree at Cornell in September 1960, completed all requirements except submission of thesis, permission for which was denied by individual who had financed the doctoral research. Ok, but he then renegged on another agreement (oral agreement unfortunately)to fund another project. Too bad. Harold Bache had put together an underwriting syndicate for the mutual fund, Compufund Inc. whose existence owes to my research. The objective of the syndicate was to raise funding of $100 million for Compufund, which in 1968 was a lot of money. My first screwing in Wall Street came when the individual who had funded my research caused the syndication to be aborted because I had criticized his outrageous performance before potential high roller investors from Hollywood which involved the funder and a group of gay friends at the Beverly Hills hotel.
I had arrived in New York in January, 1964, to complete the last phase of my PhD thesis research.
I was a pioneer in the introduction of quantitative methods (mathematical and statistical tools, probability theory and statistical inference, analysis of risk, uncertainty, and loss)in financial analysis.
