I worked with liberal organizations during the desegregation riots in the 60's, including protesting in Indiana, where the KKK was started. During that time I met my husband who is black. We have a biracial child. I wanted to bring her to see my husband's grandmother in Alabama but he said we couldn't - we'd be killed. We also lived in D.C. for awhile. During that time Martin Luther King was murdered. We were only a few blocks from the riots, and could see the fires. The black people in that area had been getting ripped of by companies that loaned them furniture. Those stores were burned.
There was a curfew after 5:00 PM and the National Guard were everywhere with their rifles.
Unfortunately me and my husband later were divorced. Being a mixed couple back then was just too hard to deal with.
I was also at the Pentagon protest where us women were putting flowers in the soldier's guns and we pretended to be going to levitate the Pentagon.
I have a degree in Mathematics from Purdue University. My ex has a degree in biochemistry from the same university. He's a brilliant man but couldn't get a job as a biochemist - a victim of racism.
I've always been what is now called a "progressive".
