I am a licensed professional counselor in Kansas. My work is with families in their homes and my emphasis is on helping them heal from the effects of complex trauma. Complex trauma is not recognized as a DSM category and has not been officially proposed as a treatable disorder in the upcoming DSM V. For children who have been neglected or exposed to violence as they were developing, it is a reality that affects how they perceive the world and how they respond to threats. Most of the children that I work with are prescribed medications for ADHD, bi-polar disorder, oppositonal defiance disorder. Many have had multiple placements in foster care. My belief is that they ae doing the best they can to take care of themselves and when they learn other ways of dealing with perceived threats, they do better.
My personal journey includes five years as a priest, 20 years as a remodeling contractor, marriage, a daughter, a divorce and a return to graduate school to earn my Master's degree in Counseling. My interest in trauma developed as I tried to understand the behaviors of adolescents who were struggling to succeed in school settings. My partner since 2004 (who teaches counseling and is a licensed marriage and family therapist and who had her own practice for 20 years) and I have presented at two ACA (American Counseling Association) conventions and several state conventions.
I enjoy cooking with the holy trinity of peppers, mushrooms and onions as a base, garlic, curries, chicken, fish and any fresh or frozen veggies. I have an old U-Haul truck that will hold all of my tools and can still make a run to Omaha on occasion. I like to balance my counseling work with ongoing construction projects in our home and gardening. I support Nebraskans for Peace, The Nebraska Zen Center and the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tahlequah Oklahoma. I oppose the Wars in Iraq and Afganistan and believe that the budget of the Pentagon is a disgrace. I am a progressive and am appalled at the cowardice of the majority of democrats who were elected.
