I am, and have lived below the poverty level throughout most of my life. I have been a single mom for 30+ years, and I managed to graduate from UCSB in my mid-forties and earned a Juris Doctorate from Loyola Law School as I turned 50, while a single parent. I live on Social Security Disability (recent breast cancer survivor,and other malities) at $900 per month and do not financially qualify for 'food stamps.' Since I applied and was turned down for food stamps, 1 1/2 years ago, I am down to 96 pounds at 5' 8", and it is only getting worse. But I chose shelter over food, because cannot afford both. Just hospitalized for hypothermia during the cold spell as I have no body fat and can't afford heat! I feel for the younger generations who must be suffering much more than I....
