Republicans refuse to caucus unless DRE touchscreen is approved as a ballot marking device
He refused because reports show the Liberty DRE is not acceptable as a ballot marking device for people with special needs because "the Liberty DRE provides no usable mechanism for independent verification." among other problems. The Brennan Center and others have threatened to sue the NYS BOE if a DRE is chosen as a ballot marking device.Meantime,Judge Sharpe has threatened the NYS BOE with jail time if they don't certify...

N.Y. sets timetable on ballot machines
(2 comments) Counties would be expected to make their initial selections of machines by Feb. 8, three days after the presidential primaries and several weeks before testing was finished. This creates problems if counties select ballot markers that do not pass certification. If counties buy machines that are later fail certification testing, where will the money come from to replace them?

Here is a summary of the current status of the lawsuit by the the Department of Justice (DOJ).The DOJ seeks to have the judge appoint a special master to force NY to buy and use new voting machines next year for the presidential election. Thanks to Marjorie Gersten of Brooklyn for this comprehensive summary.Don't be fooled into thinking that this is of interest only to NY residents.Actually, what happens there affects everyone.

NY Daily News: Disaster in the making
"Federal lawyers are seeking a court order that would force New York to replace every one of its mechanical voting machines with electronic equipment by September 2008, a mere 10 months from now. ......Even to think about using untested machines that voters have never used before, poll workers have never seen before and technicians have never fixed before is insane."

Civic Groups Blast Department of Justice Proposal to Gut Standards
A coalition of civic groups harshly criticized a proposal made by the DoJ today that calls for the federal courts to consider taking control from the state and to select new voting systems for NY for '08 primary elections. The groups said DOJ's position endangered numerous safeguards for new voting systems that were won in state law, such as mandating that the voting systems computer code be held in escrow in case of problems

HR 811 Stalls in House, CA SoS Bowen on DREs and the FL taser incident
(4 comments) The Red Team added a little piece of code that changed the result both on the electronically recorded ballot and the paper trail. If the voter noticed and went back, the software in essence said,"Uh-oh,I better do this right the next time and corrected it," but if the voter didn't notice, and again I go back to the study that says more than half of voters don't notice, then the paper trail matches the wrong electronic ballot..

Urge your member of Congress to amend Holt's HR 811
Ask them to support or offer an amendment that requires paper ballots -- which are actually tabulated -- as the official ballot and bans DREs. If there is no admendment to ban DRE's, please tell them to vote NO on HR 811. Sadly some election activists are lobbying Congress to support the bill as written mistakenly claiming it has paper ballots and open source codes. IT DOES NOT.

NY Election Commissioners Call for Delaying New Voting Machines Until 2009
(1 comments) The machines closest to certification are the Liberty DRE and the Diebold scanner. They have the least problems meeting the state & federal requirements. The Liberty is in use in very few places in the US.It is used in Europe and is the machine that a voting rights group there hacked to play chess. The Diebold scanner is the one examined in FL that showed how a whole election can be changed if someone gets access...?!?#!

Action Alert: ACTION NEEDED IN NYC VOTING MOVEMENT
Here is information from Teresa Hommel about upcoming machine demonstrations and training sessions in NYC. If you are in the city these will be worth your time. For the rest of us, the information below about how long it takes to vote on electronic voting machines ("DREs") is important. If counties that purchase DREs don't buy enough, voters will be standing in long lines. Think Ohio 2004.

SIGN THE PETITION TO PUT PAPER BALLOTS ON THE NATIONAL AGENDA
(2 comments) Ask Speaker Nancy Pelosi to put paper ballots on the agenda in the new Congress's first 100 hours. No more electronic voting machines, with or without a paper trail. The new NIST report plans to decertify DREs with no paper trail starting in 2007. Don't wait, outlaw them now. If you need to, give states funds to replace them. It's a small price to pay for democracy.
