It's the Settlements, Stupid!
(2 comments) By helping to fund illegal settlements the Israel Lobby, with the help of U.S. charitable foundations, is in fact an agent of the State of Israel. It is in direct opposition to U.S. policy regarding illegal settlements and its actions hinder a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Funding the Israel Lobby and Illegal Settlements
(7 comments) Individuals and foundations that provide funds to organizations in the Israel Lobby also help fund illegal settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Many of the U.S. contributions going to those illegal settlements come from tax exempt charitable organizations. Some of the organizations that provide money for free trips to Israel for members of Congress also fund illegal settlements.

Does Congressman Boehner Launder Campaign Money?
(3 comments) The leadership PAC for Congressman John Boehner (R-Ohio) sent $145,000 to 43 of the same corporate PACs that contributed to his leadership PAC. Those 43 corporate PACs in turn sent $271,450 to Rep. Boehner's reelection committee. Is this a simple case of campaign money laundering, or is there some other explanation for such transfers?

McCain shirks responsibility for start of Iraq War
(1 comments) Senator McCain argued in last Friday's debate that the next president will not have to address the issue of why we went into Iraq. But in November's election the American people should address that issue and hold accountable those responsible for selling the war on false information. This would include Sen. McCain.

McCain's Foreign Policy: Disingenous and More of the Same
By saying merely that the US "relied" on the Shah of Iran, McCain thereby misleads and obscures one of the reasons why there is so much anti-American resentment in the Middle East.

BARACK OBAMA, BOBBY KENNEDY, AND THE NECESSITY OF HOPE
(2 comments) Barack Obama, like Bobby Kennedy before him, recognizes that any transformative power he might achieve will require a motivated and mobilized electorate. He clearly recognizes, in spite of criticism to the contrary, that widespread hope for a better future is only a necessary condition for change, not a sufficient condition.

The War on Corruption--Still Code Red
(2 comments) The Republicans' K-Street pharmacy offered them political Viagra ® without the 4-hour warning. In spite of their dreams, nothing lasts forever and is also devoid of side effects, especially the forbidden fruit of their Culture of Corruption. Explicit graphics included.

How much is Senator Lieberman worth -- to John McCain?
(1 comments) If Joseph Lieberman can persuade his past supporters to donate even half as much to John McCain as they did to him in 2006 he would merit a handsome reward from McCain. But if the McCain candidacy fails and the Democrats gain just one more member in the Senate, Lieberman will lose his catbird seat in that body and will look more like a lame duck. That will be bad for Joe, bad for AIPAC, but good for America.

Links are provided to several articles that succinctly describe these issues, and to the author's web site that contains graphical presentations that provide an alternative view of defense industry PAC contributions to members of Congress.

Dubai, Port Security, and Bush's Lesson On Crying Wolf
The real lesson from the Dubai port episode is not that Americans need to overcome their anxieties about the possibility of an Arab firm operating U.S. ports. Rather it is that Americans need to be more sensitive to attempts by the Bush Administration to manipulate their anxieties.
