Joe Biden gets sworn in - US Presidential Inauguration, From CreativeCommonsPhoto

Joe Biden's Inauguration, and Amanda Gorman's Beacon The distrust lifted this morning, not coincidentally as that 747 lifted off from Joint base Andrews, heading, unfortunately for us, to Florida. We can trust in this experiment again, with a man made for the moment as its president.

Trump's Fascism and Republican Responsibility It was never whether Donald Trump's brand of lame-fisted fascism would brutalize this nation, but when.

Court's Conservatives Are Right: Pandemic Limits on Houses of Worship Are Unconstitutional Twice in the past few weeks the Supreme Court declared unconstitutional attendance limits imposed on houses of worship during the coronavirus pandemic.
How it feels to be told to go back where you came from. As Donald Trump targets democratic congresswomen of color with his tweets., From YouTubeVideos

Go Back Where You Came From Go back where you came from. The line, along with its mentally deficient cousin -- "if you don't like it here, leave" -- ironically feels at home anywhere on the planet, because it's spoken everywhere in every language, every gesture, and especially these days, with the wonders of anonymity and the sewers of social media, every keyboard, even allegedly presidential ones.

Green New Deal Me In The Green New Deal. The name may be hoaky. The substance isn't. It's as simple as this: either we adopt it in the main or we kiss goodbye life as we've known it, in coastal Florida especially. These coasts we're so fond of are being redrawn as we speak. No beach renourishment or seawall will stand in the way.

What National Emergency? We have crises on our hands, some of them damn near emergencies. We also have an American leader not only genuflecting to autocrats from Turkey to Russia to Saudi Arabia, but behaving like them. If there is a national emergency, he's it.

Truth Derangement Syndrome President Trump wasn't treasonous in Helsinki. He was a patsy, a doormat, a boob. You can respect a traitor, at least for his guile. It's hard to respect a toady. Putin personally took charge of the campaign to help get Trump elected in 2016 while undermining the country's democratic process. That's the intelligence community's finding.

Cruel and Usual Trump Neither children nor parents are a national security threat. None of it is legal under international law. But if Trump can ban Muslims from the country on fabricated pretenses, nothing is stopping him from doing the same to migrant children with the wrong skin color. Again, maybe we should not be surprised. Trump is only exercising his cruel and usual inhumanity.
The Supreme Court sided with a Colorado baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple., From YouTubeVideos

Pious Homophobes Win One No one was questioning Phillips's faith, only his refusal to do for one couple what he would do for any other, as long as they were heteros. His belief is a canard. His conduct in the context of his business is the only issue. His belief didn't even have anything to do with the gay couple's request. They weren't calling his beliefs in doubt or suggesting that by baking them a cake he was endorsing their sexuality.

Israel's Mass Shootings Not that demonstrators were felons. Or armed. Or without 2 million reasons to demolish the fence. They were unarmed. And they were murdered. Meanwhile we Americans applaud, plant a time bomb in the form of an embassy in Jerusalem, or look the other way. We are one with the murderers.

Trump's Census Whitewash The Trump Administration has come up with a new way to further gerrymander voting districts in Republicans' favors. For the first time in 70 years, the Census Bureau will follow the Justice Department's order and ask respondents whether they are U.S. citizens or not. There is zero reason to do so, because the question is already asked on the Census Bureau's annual community survey.

To Keep America Great, Legalize All Undocumented Immigrants The Trump administration is raiding 7-Elevens, terrorizing immigrants in vast sweeps, including children, pledging to throw out hundreds of thousands of Salvadorans, Haitians and others from countries that don't fit Donald Trump's idea of racial purity, and fixating on just building a wall. It doesn't get more retrograde.

Alabama Saves The Day. But Not Much Else. It's an odd day when Democrats have Alabama to thank for their better fortune. Winning a U.S. senate seat in the state that gave Donald Trump a 62 percent victory margin, narrowing the Republican-Democratic split in the Senate to one and scoring a victory for minorities, women's dignity and gay rights, in Alabama, is no small thing.

Bush: Torturer, Tyrant, Disgrace Mr. Bush vetoed a bill that would have outlawed the CIA's use of torture in interrogations (a bill, it should be noted, John McCain, alleged opponent of torture, voted against). He had the temerity, our Dear Leader, to begin his official endorsement of torture in his radio address this morning with these words: "Good morning." Good for him and his kind of delusional sadists, maybe. Not so good for this country.
