Joe Carvalko is an American author and lawyer born in Bridgeport, CT. His recent novel, We Were Beautiful Once, Chapters from a Cold War (Sunbury Press, 2013) was inspired by a trial he conducted that was featured in a 2004 documentary Missing, Presumed Dead: The Search for America's POWs narrated by Ed Asner. He also recently authored The Techno-human Shell-A Jump in the Evolutionary Gap (Sunbury Press, 2012), about how future medical technology will transform us into part cyborg. He has authored articles and academic papers such as: Basic Copyright chapter for Now What? The Creative Writer’s Guide to Success After the MFA, (Fairfield University, 2014); Who Should Own In-The-Body Medical Data in the Age of Electronic Medicine? Featured Opinion, Special Issue IEEE Technology & Society Magazine (June 2014); Law and Policy in an Era of Cyborg-Assisted-Life, Technology and Society, 2013 IEEE International Symposium (2013); Intellectual Property Issues in the Financial & Banking Industries (PA Bar, 2007); Introduction to an Ontology of Intellectual Property (ABA SciTech, 2005). Poem, Mobius Strip, FLARE: The Flagler Review, (spring edition, 2014); Recently, the poem Registered Letter was included in the anthology Proud to Be: Writing by American Warriors, Volume 2 (Missouri Humanities Council, Warriors Arts Alliance, and Southeast Missouri State University Press.) In 2012, he was one of two finalists for the Red Mountain Press, top poetry honors for The Interior; and one of three finalists for the 2012 Esurance Poetry prize for The Road Home. His poems Heart Stopping Rhythm and My Home Town were featured on WPKN/FM and his poem Ethering Dawn was featured on POW/MIA Radio (KHNC/AM). In 2007 he authored A Road Once Traveled, Life from All Sides, a narrative on the fabric of American life, and 2004 he authored A Deadly Fog, poems, essays and short stories about war in America. Recently he co-authored Law, The Science and Technology Guidebook for Lawyers(ABA Publishing, 2014). When not writing, he is Adjunct Professor of Law at Quinnipiac University, School of Law, a member of the Community Bioethics Forum, Yale School of Medicine and a member of the Yale Technology and Ethics working group, Institute for Electrical Electronic Engineers (Section on Technology and Society), and the ABA Section on Science and Technology, a jazz pianist (releasing a CD of standards, 2013). He is USAF Veteran.
