You may be too young, but during my own lifetime I have witnessed this plan in action. When Riza Shah came to power his mission was twofold: to destroy Islam, even in the eyes of the Muslims themselves, and to belittle the clergy and then destroy them, thus removing what the foreigners saw as the barriers to their designs.
