Hiroshima survivor prays for "hardship" while President Obama echoes "Yes, we can" to a world free of nuclear weapons
Over the weekend, many gathered to remember the 64th anniversary of the U.S. bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Two "Hibakusha" (Japanese survivors of the bombings) shared their stories. Madelyn Hoffman, executive director of NJ Peace Action as part of an ambitious plan will be asking President Obama to keep his promise about moving toward a nuclear weapons free world.

The State Department Ushers in Dennis Ross in the Dark of the Night

For months many concerns have been raised over the prospect of a Ross appointment as a special envoy to or adviser on Iran. To assign the former diplomat who actively supports not just coercive actions against Iran, but the policy option of a preventive military attack seems counterintuitive to the need for trust in this highly sensitive relationship.

Jay Rockefeller Awarded Intelligence Public Service Medal: For Telecom and Torture Immunity?

On Monday, the ODNI awarded the National Intelligence Distinguished Public Service Medal to Senator John D. Rockefeller IV. It's not known if there were others in the running, but a prior commitment to keeping numerous briefings about wiretapping and torture on the down-low and opposing the appointment of special counsel to investigate the destruction of the infamous torture tapes may have sealed the deal.

Rep. Hoekstra Won't Seek Reelection: Good News for Intelligence Integrity?
It is expected that Rep. Pete Hoekstra will announce Monday that he will not seek reelection in 2010. His anticipated departure from Congress and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence in two years won't be soon enough for some based on his troubling relationship with intelligence.

Update: Homeland Security Climbs Scaffolding on National Archives to Arrest Veterans

Without warning Homeland Security agents arrived at the site where seven veterans and the mother of USMC Sgt. James Brower on his third tour in Iraq have been occupying the top of a 92-foot high scaffolding at the National Archives Building to arrest the protesters.

Veterans Occupy National Archives - Again!

On Saturday, November 15, at 8:00 am, at the National Archives Building on Connecticut Ave., eight military veterans and a military mother climbed a 9-foot retaining fence and occupied a ninety-foot high scaffolding to raise two 450 square foot banners stating, "DEFEND OUR CONSTITUTION. ARREST BUSH AND CHENEY: WAR CRIMINALS!" and "WE WILL NOT BE SILENT."

On Monday, the day before Veterans day, 14 members of the 'Hempstead 15' were arraigned on charges of disorderly conduct. The charges stem from a protest outside of the final presidential debate at Hofstra University on October 15.
