Paul Craig Roberts

Paul Craig Roberts, a former Assistant Secretary of the US Treasury and former associate editor of the Wall Street Journal, has held numerous academic appointments. He has been reporting shocking cases of prosecutorial abuse for two decades. Myths of Our Time
(28 comments) Humanity has endeavored for millennia to control evil with morality. In the American “superpower,” this effort has collapsed and failed. The United States needs to be censured for its immoral behavior, not have that behavior rationalized as being in its material interests.

America's Dismal Future
(16 comments) Allegedly, the US is a superpower and Israel is a client state whose very existence depends entirely on US military and economic aid and diplomatic protection. Yet, in the real world it works the other way. Israel is the superpower and the US is its client state.

The Evil Empire
(27 comments) The US government is now so totally under the thumbs of organized interest groups that “our” government can no longer respond to the concerns of the American people who elect the president and the members of the House and Senate.

US-Israeli Missile Defense War Game Signals Israeli Attack on Iran
(65 comments) The joint US-Israeli war games involving 2,000 troops from the US European Command, the Israeli Army, and 17 US Navy ships is further indication to the world that no matter what crimes the Israelis commit, the US will protect Israel from being held accountable.

The Financo-State: Are You Ready for the Next Crisis?
(4 comments) The stark increase in US income inequality in the 21st century coincides with the offshoring of US jobs. Millions of Americans have lost their homes and half of their retirement savings while being loaded up with government debt to bail out the banksters who created the derivative crisis.

US Joins Ranks of Failed States
(5 comments) In any failed state, the greatest threat to the population comes from the government and the police. That is certainly the situation today in the USA. Americans have no greater enemy than their own government.

The Rich Have Stolen The Economy
(25 comments) While the US speeds plans for the ultimate bunker buster bomb and President Obama prepares to send another 45,000 troops into Afghanistan, 44,789 Americans die every year from lack of medical treatment. National Guardsmen say they would rather face the Taliban than the US economy.

War Criminals Are Becoming The Arbiters Of Law
(5 comments) the Israel Lobby, after years of effort, has succeeded in repealing the First Amendment by having the Hate Crime Bill attached to the recently passed military appropriations bill. This is the way the syllogism works: It is anti-semitic to criticize Israel.

Warmonger Wins Peace Prize
(15 comments) The non-cynical can say that the Nobel committee is seizing on Obama's rhetoric to lock him into the pursuit of peace instead of war. We can all hope that it works. But the more likely result is that the award has made “War is Peace” the reality.

Marx and Lenin Revisited
(11 comments) In Marx's day, religion was the opiate of the masses. Today the media is. Let's look at media reporting that facilitates the financial oligarchy's ability to delude the people.

How the Feds Imprison the Innocent
(6 comments) For two decades I have been attempting to make Americans aware that the danger to their liberty comes not from foreign adversaries, terrorists, or criminals, but from prosecutors, who have destroyed law as a shield of the innocent and turned law into a weapon against the innocent.

America Is Led And Informed By Liars
(31 comments) Just as the factual reports from the weapons inspectors in Iraq were ignored by the Bush Regime, the factual reports from the IAEA are ignored by the Obama Regime. Like the Bush Regime, the Middle East policy of the Obama Regime is based in lies and deception.

More Lies, More Deception
(10 comments) In case you don't know, the term “international community” is shorthand for the US, Israel, and Europe, a handful of arrogant and rich countries that oppress the rest of the world. America will not be satisfied until, like Rome, she has more enemies and more wars than she can survive.

The Economy Is A Lie, Too
(6 comments) The spin that masquerades as news is becoming more delusional. Consumer spending is 70% of the US economy. It is the driving force, and it has been shut down.

Why Propaganda Trumps Truth
(34 comments) As far as I can tell, most Americans have far greater confidence in the government than they do in the truth. The US government's response to 9/11, regardless of who is responsible, has altered our country forever. The most disturbing fact of all remains: The 9/11 event responsible for these adverse happenings has not been investigated.

The Health Care Deceit
(16 comments) The health care bill is not about health care. It is about protecting and increasing the profits of the insurance companies. The main feature of the health care bill is the “individual mandate,” which requires everyone in America to buy health insurance. Committee chairman Max Baucus proposes to impose up to a $3,800 fine on Americans who fail to purchase health insurance.

Europe's Complicity in Evil
(4 comments) There is a widespread supposition that Obama, being black and a member of an oppressed race, will imbue US foreign policy with a higher morality than the world experienced from Bush and Clinton. This is a delusion.

Why Not Crippling Sanctions for Israel and the US?
(2 comments) The US is not a forever “superpower” that can indefinitely ignore its own laws and international law. The US will eventually fall as a result of its hubris, arrogance, and imperial overreach. When the American Empire collapses, will its enablers also be held accountable in the war crimes court?

Americans: Serfs Ruled by Oligarchs

Can the Economy Recover?
(6 comments) There is no economy left to recover. -The US manufacturing economy was lost to offshoring and free trade ideology. -It was replaced by a mythical "New Economy."

Can The Economy Recover?
(13 comments) Nothing in Obama's economic policy is directed at saving the US dollar as reserve currency or the livelihoods of the American people. Obama's policy, like Bush's before him, is keyed to the enrichment of Goldman Sachs and the armament industries.

Iran Falls to US PSYOPS
(12 comments) President Obama called on the Iranian government to allow protesters to control the streets in Tehran. Would Obama or any US president allow protesters to control the streets in Washington, D.C.? There was more objective evidence that George W. Bush stole his two elections than there is at this time of election theft in Iran. But there was no orchestrated media campaign to discredit the US government.

Ignorance is Strength
(28 comments) The American media's one-sided and propagandistic coverage of the Iranian election has made an American hero out of the defeated candidate, Mousavi. This leaves one wondering if anyone anywhere in the US media or US government knows that Mir-Hossein Mousavi, has been fingered as the Butcher of Beirut, responsible for the bloody attacks on the US embassy and Marine Corps barracks in Beirut during the Reagan administration...

The Waning Power of Truth
(19 comments) It can fairly be said that there is not much difference between the American public and the fictional one under Big Brother in George Orwell's 1984. The few independent voices that do exist are simply drowned out by the constant flow of disinformation. The US government's success in spinning 9/11 guaranteed the government's success in pursuing a hegemonic agenda under a cloak of lies.

Iran Faces Greater Risks Than It Knows
(3 comments) Today the street demonstrations in Tehran show signs of orchestration. The protesters, primarily young people, especially young women opposed to the dress codes, carry signs written in English: "Where is My Vote?"- The signs are intended for the western media, not for the Iranian government. More evidence of orchestration is provided by the protesters' chant, "death to the dictator, death to Ahmadinejad."-

Are You Ready For War With Demonized Iran?
(10 comments) Iranians have a bitter experience with the United States government. Their first democratic election, after emerging from occupied and colonized status, in the 1950s was overturned by the US government. The US government installed in place of the elected candidate a dictator who tortured and murdered dissidents who thought Iran should be an independent country and not ruled by an American puppet.

Are you ready for war with demonized Iran?
(9 comments) How much attention do elections in Japan, India, Argentina, or any other country, get from the US media? How many Americans and American journalists even know who is in political office in other countries besides England, France, and Germany? Yet, many know of Iran's President Ahmadinejad. The reason is obvious. He is daily demonized in the US media.

Succumbing to the dark side; Do Americans Have a Moral Conscience?
(10 comments) Obama can say that he forbids torture, but if those responsible are not held accountable, he has no way of enforcing his order. As perpetrators are discharged from the military and re-enter society, some will find employment as police officers and prison officials and guards, and the practice will spread. The dark side will take over America.

Criminalizing Criticism of Israel
(25 comments) To keep American minds captive, the Lobby is working to ban as anti-semitic any truth or disagreeable fact that pertains to Israel. It is permissible to criticize every other country in the world, but it is anti-semitic to criticize Israel, and anti-semitism will soon be a universal hate-crime in the Western world.

America's Shame
(15 comments) The United States has been Israel's greatest enabler in its long-term murder of the Palestinian people. Millions of "evangelical Christians" endorse Israel's ethnic cleansing of Palestine. The rest of the world condemns the Israeli military attack on the Gaza Ghetto. Last week the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution requiring a ceasefire and the withdrawal of the Israeli SS from Gaza. The US abstained.

94 Years of Serfdom
(7 comments) Today the income tax serves our interest less than ever before. The collapse of socialism and the rise of the high speed Internet have opened vast under-utilized foreign work forces to first world corporations. The consequent loss of jobs and careers by Americans cannot be rectified through the corporate income tax.

How Freedom Was Lost
(13 comments) In the nineteenth century, there were "underground railways" that slaves could use to escape to freedom. In our time, "underground railways" are known as "tax havens." Just as slave owners sought to abolish "underground railways," our owners today seek to outlaw "tax havens."

Obama's Attack on the Middle Class
(60 comments) What is the difference between the $250,000 "rich" income and the $245,000 "non-rich" income? After Obama's tax scheme goes into effect, the $245,000 income will benefit from a tax cut, and the $250,000 will have a tax increase. Will people in the 96th percentile ask for pay cuts that will drop them into the 95th percentile?

Is the Bailout Plan Breeding a Greater Crisis?
(20 comments) At his March 24 press conference President Obama demonstrated that he is capable of understanding issues as presented to him by his advisers and able to pass on the explanations to the press. The question is whether Obama's advisers understand the issues.

Was the Bailout Itself a Scam?
(61 comments) by Paul Craig Roberts Professor Michael Hudson (CounterPunch, March 18) is correct that the orchestrated outrage over the $165 million AIG bonuses is a diversion from the thousand times greater theft from taxpayers of the approximately $200 billion "bailout" of AIG.

Change for the Worse
(64 comments) The only change we have from Obama and the Democrats is for the worse. Bush's FY 2008 budget deficit was $450 billion. The FY 2009 deficit is projected at $1.2 trillion. The budget deficit in Obama's first budget is $1.75 trillion, a fourfold increase in two years. The "war on terror" will never end, because the moronic US government has defined everyone who resists US hegemony as a "terrorist."

How the Economy Was Lost
(21 comments) The American economy has gone away. It is not coming back until free trade myths are buried six feet under. America's 20th century economic success was based on two things. Free trade was not one of them. America's economic success was based on protectionism, which was ensured by the union victory in the Civil War, and on British indebtedness, which destroyed the British pound as world reserve currency

Who Remembers "Guns and Butter"?
(5 comments) President Lyndon Johnson's policy of Great Society spending and Vietnam War is credited with the rising American inflation that persisted until checked by President Reagan's supply-side policy. The Bush/Obama 21st century policy of guns and butter makes LBJ look like a piker. The 2009 and 2010 federal budget deficits will be monstrous. But Obama is exiting(apparently)the Iraq War in order to start two, possibly, three more wars.

A bankrupt and discredited country: The Era of American Leadership Is Over
(16 comments) Vast numbers of people in the United States and abroad are hoping that President Obama will end America's illegal wars, halt America's support for Israel's massacre of Lebanese and Palestinians, and punish, instead of reward, the shyster banksters whose fraudulent financial instruments have destroyed economics and imposed massive sufferings on people all over the world...

Cover-up of the Sick Economy
(15 comments) Statistics don't mean what they once did. According to the methodology used in 1980, the US unemployment rate in December reached 17.5 percent, compared to the reported 7.2% Ouch! Our government lies to us about economic statistics, just as it lies to us about "terrorists," "weapons of mass destruction," "building freedom and democracy in the Middle East," and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The Difficulty of Being an Informed American
(14 comments) Americans addicted to print media must turn to alternative newspapers, which tend to be weekly or bi-weekly. However, the news and commentary provided are often superb. The function of the "mainstream media" is to sell products and to brainwash the audience for the government and interest groups. By subscribing to it, Americans support their own brainwashing.

Will There Be a Recovery?
(16 comments) The US, with its collapsing economy, its bailouts of financial institutions, and its wars, is facing the largest government budget deficit in its history, both in absolute amount and as a percentage of national income. But old solutions can't apply today; the circumstances are different.

What became of Western Morality?
(2 comments) On the last day of the old year, two Israelis, Jeff Halper who heads the Israeli peace movement ICAHD and Neve Gordon who is chairman of the department of politics and government at Ben-Gurion University, asked, "Where's the Academic Outrage Over the Bombing of a University in Gaza?" It is the goyim moralists who are silent, not the Jews.

Friday, January 2, 2009
What became of Western Morality?
(13 comments) It fools Americans, but it doesn't fool Israelis. The Israelis have always known that "self-defense" is a cloak for a Zionist policy of territorial expansion. The policy is controversial within Israel. Many Israelis object, just as many Americans object to President Bush's illegal wars and violations of US civil liberties. Many Israelis give voice to their moral conscience, but they are overwhelmed by vested interests.

May We No Longer Be Silent
(15 comments) Israel's excuse for its violence is that from time to time the Palestinian resistance organization, Hamas, fires off rockets into Israel to protest the ghetto life that Israel imposes on Gazans. The rockets are ineffectual for the most part and seldom claim Israeli casualties. However, the real purpose for the Israeli attack is to destroy Hamas.

The Cost of Hegemony is Beyond Reach
(5 comments) Undeterred by massive budget deficits from wars, a falling economy, and financial bailouts, the US government has managed to start a new cold war with Russia. Last Friday, the Russian military announced that it was developing a new generation of ballistic missiles in response to the US government's decision to deploy ballistic missile defenses in Poland and the Czech Republic.

The no-think nation - The Crisis Has Hardly Begun
(12 comments) The destruction that the Bush/Cheney reign of terror has wrought on our economy grows by the day. (9 comments) "We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality -- judiciously, as you will -- we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors . . . and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do." (Bush White House aide explaining the New Reality).

Where Inflation Came From
(6 comments) Until the Reagan administration indexed the income tax, inflation was a boon to government, because by pushing up wages and salaries inflation pushed taxpayers into higher brackets. This allowed the real tax burden on labor to rise without politicians having to raise the tax rates. Inflation also destroyed the value of depreciation allowances, thus raising the tax rate on capital as well.

Unanswered Bailout Questions
(6 comments) Just as the Bush regime's wars have been used to pour billions of dollars into the pockets of its military-security donor base, the Paulson bailout looks like a Bush regime scheme to incur $700 billion in new public debt in order to transfer the money into the coffers of its financial donor base. The US taxpayers will be left with the interest payments in perpetuity...

Bailout Fraud: Does the bailout pass the smell test?

The End of American Hegemony
(18 comments) George W. Bush and Bill Clinton did the deregulation that led to the current crisis. The Paulson bailout saves his firm, Goldman Sachs. The Paulson bailout transfers the troubled financial instruments that the financial sector created from the books of the financial sector to the books of the taxpayers at the US Treasury. This is all the bailout does. It rescues the guilty. It does not address the real problem...

Thursday, October 2, 2008
The Bailout Is A Fraud
(1 comments) the Paulson bailout does not address the core problem. It only addresses the problem for the financial institutions that hold the troubled assets. Under the bailout plan, the troubled assets move from the banks' books to the Treasury's. But the underlying problem--the continuing diminishment of mortgage and home values--remains and continues to worsen.

(12 comments) The control over the financial system that the bailout would give to the executive branch would mean, in effect, state capitalism or fascism. If we add state capitalism to the Bush administration's success in eroding both the US Constitution and the power of Congress, we may be witnessing the final death of accountable constitutional government.

American Insouciance
(3 comments) China's greatest human rights failing is that China is the Bush Regime's prime enabler of its war crimes and human rights abuses in Iraq and Afghanistan. By financing Bush's budget deficit, China is financing Bush's gratuitous wars. Indeed, China can be said to finance the weaponry that the US gives Israel to enable the suppression of the Palestinians and with which to bomb the civilian population of Lebanon.

The Anthrax Attacks and the Assault on Civil Liberties
(1 comments) The anthrax scare is one more example of the Bush Regime's use of disinformation to advance an undeclared political agenda. the Bush Regime used Brian Ross at ABC News to spread the lie far and wide that US govt tests proved that the anthrax mailed to various Americans, including prominent US Senators, was made in Iraq by Saddam Hussein. Looking at the Republican mess, I doubt that Democrats, try as they may, can equal it.

We, the Salt of the Earth, Take Precedence
(8 comments) Which country is the rogue nation? Iraq? Iran? Or the United States? ...slaughtering of foreigners doesn't seem to bother the American public. Elect Obama or Fall Into Tyranny
(2 comments) Obama's election would signify the electorate's rejection of Bush and the Republicans. It is not sufficient accountability, but at least it is some accountability.

Can Truth Retain Its Independence?
(4 comments) Justin Raimondo has a good column this morning on Antiwar.com. It is written as a fundraiser. But what it shows is that journalists (and whistle-blowers) who tell the truth in America are more likely to be pummeled than rewarded, whereas those who lie for powerful interest groups live high on the hog.

War Abroad and Poverty at Home
(10 comments) The "world's only superpower" is so broke it can't even finance its own wars. Each additional dollar that the irresponsible Bush Regime has to solicit from foreigners puts more downward pressure on the dollar's value. During the eight wasted and extravagant years of the Bush Regime, the once mighty US dollar has lost about 60% of its value against the euro. The dollar has lost even more of its value against gold and oil.

Anglo-American Ascendancy Lost in Unnecessary Wars
(2 comments) In a new book that will infuriate the fake conservatives who inhabit the Republican Party, Patrick J. Buchanan documents how British self-righteousness, delusion, and hubris destroyed both the British Empire and Western ascendancy in two unnecessary wars launched by a small cabal of morons that ruled Britain

The Iraq War Morphs Into The Iranian War
(19 comments) It is 1939 all over again. The world waits helplessly for the next act of naked aggression by rogue states. Only this time the rogue states are not the Third Reich and Fascist Italy. They are the United States and Israel.

The Agenda Behind the Hoax; What the Iraq War is About
(8 comments) The more likely explanation for the US invasion of Iraq is the neoconservative Bush Regime's commitment to the defense of Israeli territorial expansion.

Petraeus Testimony Next Week Will Signal Iran Attack
(32 comments) The Bush regime will tell any lie and orchestrate any event in order to "finish the job" in the Middle East. "Finishing the job" means to destroy the ability of Iraq, Iran, and Syria to provide support for the Palestinians and for Hezbollah in southern Lebanon against Israeli aggression

Russians, Saudis Expect U.S. Attack On Iran
(14 comments) The US Congress, the US media, the American people, and the United Nations, are looking the other way as Cheney prepares his attack on Iran. If only America had an independent media and an opposition party. If there were a shred of integrity left in American political life, perhaps a third act of naked aggression--a third war crime under the Nuremberg standard--by the Bush Regime could be prevented.

Was Polonium-210 Being Smuggled for a Dirty Bomb?
(10 comments) A conspiracy that would launch a war on the basis of forged "intelligence" and false allegations is a conspiracy that believes strongly in its agenda. Such a conspiracy would not be content with only partial achievement of its agenda. As we should all know by now, the neoconservative agenda is for the US to overthrow Iraq, Iran, and Syria at a minimum.

How Republicans Created Executive Branch Hegemony
(39 comments) The case for impeaching Bush and Cheney--indeed the entire administration--is by far the most powerful and necessary case for impeachment that has ever existed. By declaring Bush unimpeachable, Pelosi is giving away Congress' only remaining power to prevent tyrannical rule by the executive branch. If Bush is above impeachment, every future president will be as well.

It Does Happen in America; The Political Trial of Don Siegelman
(10 comments) The frame-up of Siegelman and businessman Richard Scrushy is so crystal clear and blatant that 52 former state attorney generals from across America, both Republicans and Democrats, have urged the US Congress to investigate the Bush administration's use of the US Department of Justice to rid themselves of a Democratic governor who "they could not beat fair and square,"
