Janet Yellen's Federal Reserve Statement -- A Translation (13 comments)
Last Wednesday Fed Chair Yellen made her scheduled press statement after the FOMC meeting. Since the transcript of her statement is impenetrable and sooooo boring, I thought I would paraphrase it for OEN readers -- so that we all know where we stand in the hierarchy of global finance.

Radio Free Russia (4 comments)
Over the last decade millions of Americans have increasingly turned to the foreign press to find out what is really going on in the world. And RT – with print and video channels online – has taken a huge chunk of that new audience.

A Socialist Looks At "Downton Abbey" (12 comments)
"Downton Abbey" seems to have captured the public's imagination as "Upstairs, Downstairs" did before it. But unlike its predecessor, Downton has sacrificed its dramatic and historical integrity to glitz and profit. What "Downton" could have been -- arguably should have been -- was the story of the earthquakes that shook the British class structure in the twentieth century. It is not that.
It's treason. Call it what it is. (50 comments)
The raft of legislation rammed through both houses of Congress since December 31st - with wide majority votes - nullifies every clause in the Bill of Rights. Every senator and congressperson who voted in favor of those bills violated his or her oath of office, the promise to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. Congress just replaced the Rule of Law with rule by tyranny. They must all be fired.

A dozen bankers are destroying civilization- and governments don't care (53 comments)
A handful of greedy bankers are intent on destroying civilization while the governments of nations - which presumably exist for the welfare of their people - sit by and let it happen. The populations of the world, including us, are now condemned to slavery and misery - unless we find a way to stop them. The big banks must be shut down permanently, and that will take many millions of us in the streets.

Is Chavez next? (3 comments)
After Iran, Venezuela?
by MIKE WHITNEY
"The build-up against Venezuela that began during the George W. Bush administration has rapidly accelerated under Obama."
-- Eva Golinger, author of "The Chávez Code: Cracking US Intervention in Venezuela"
we are all terrorists now (15 comments)
Since no evidence is required in court(since there is no trial)any of us can be accused of supporting terrorism (for holding contrary opinions, sending a ten dollar check to Oxfam or on any whim),can then be arrested and imprisoned for life without charges, access to an attorney or communication with family. This is Stalin's America, and the prisons are gulags. Whatever this is,it is not a constitutional republic.

Bloomberg television slanders OWS protest (1 comments)
At 6:00 A.M. Friday morning Bloomberg television featured a report on the OWS protests of November 17, claiming that only 2000 protesters participated and stating emphatically that "Occupy Wall Street has failed to generate enthusiasm from the American population". Both OWS and the NYC police number the crowd at Foley Square at 32,500 people. And national polls put support for the protests at one third of the nation.
The Big Club and Their Big Plan (11 comments)
It is an actual "right-wing conspiracy", a war being waged on multiple fronts with a single aim: to create a feudal society, where Americans live mired in debt and learn to expect the dollar-a-day wages common in Asia, while the power brokers continue to live in the obscene luxury of 17th century monarchs. To quote George Carlin, "It is a big club, and you ain't in it". Can an international resistance movement defeat them?
Where are the grown-ups? (42 comments)
As a veteran protester who has been waiting for resistance to the corporate state to show up in the next generation, I am frustrated and pissed off. The protest long-planned and scheduled to begin in Freedom Plaza in Washington DC this week, much better organized and hugely more focused, is putting Occupy Wall Street to shame.

THE FED IS STARVING THE WORLD (13 comments)
In response to the accusation that Federal Reserve policies are causing global food price inflation, Chairman Bernanke replied "Yes, but the index of US small cap stocks is up 30% since the 2009 lows". (Translation: the rich are now even richer while everybody else is now hungrier)
THE U.S. STOCK MARKET IS RIGGED (13 comments)
Since 2008 U.S. stock and treasury bond prices have had no relationship to the laws of supply and demand. Charles Biderman, CEO of Trimtabs, tells us that the Fed is no longer even trying to hide the fact that it is rigging the markets.

Is Russ Feingold our last hope? (5 comments)
Many Americans see revolution as the only remedy to embedded corruption. The revolution may come, but it will not be the one we always wished for. We urgently need the following: Publicly funded elections, an end to gerrymandering, and the impeachment of any Supreme Court justice who rules that a corporation is a person with all rights and protections guaranteed under the constitution.

Dear Mr. President: We will fight you (7 comments)
We no longer trust you. We will fight you. Until you live up to your promise, you cannot count on us to support your programs. We, your former supporters, are growing in ranks. You will have to answer to us as well as to the Republican opposition.

Four Steps to Restoring Democracy
President Obama may be slow to act on progressive issues, but there are signs that he is open to persuasion. If we want to see changes more potent than a return to Clinton-era centrism, we will need to create the popular will to support them. Here are four vital but non-partisan issues on which we can organize that Obama would likely support. Collectively they would restore our lost democracy.
