I have been concerned about animal suffering ever since
I received my first puppy Peaches in 1975. She made me take a good look at the animal kingdom and I was shocked to see how badly we treat so many animals. At 77, I've been a vegan for the past 30 years and I thank God every day that I am. I am most disturbed at how little the Catholic Church and Christian churches generally give to concern re animal suffering in their ministry. I wrote to 350 bishops in 2001 and only 10-13 responded. I feel that the very least they can do is to instruct that the priests give one sermon a year on compassion to animals. I am still waiting for that sermon. I also belong to Catholic Concern for Animals - founded in England in 1929. (They are on the internet) I recently sent a sample copy of their bi-monthly publication called the ARK to the 8 Catholic bishops of Ohio. Only ONE kindly responded. Somehow we have to reach the Christian teaching magisterium. There is next to nothing re animal concerns and compassion for them. They basically believe that animals are the lesser of God's creation and that gives us the right to do anything we want to them. Way wrong. We need to change their mindsets. The animals are God's first and He expects us to treat them compassionately.

The Torture of Patagonia's Lambs I think all animals are special in their own way, but there is just something very beautiful about a lamb. No wonder Jesus called Himself the Lamb of God. Sadly, these dear innocent creatures are being violated in the most cruel way for their wool. I can't understand how we can treat them so horribly.

A Judge of Compassion I shall never forget the name - Judge B. Lynn Winmill - for I find him to be a man of compassion. Seven states passed Ag-gag laws and none had a judge of the stature of Judge Winmill, who was brave enough to say the ag-gag law in Idaho was unconstitutional.

Need New Olympic Committee I was crestfallen when I heard that the Olympic Committee had chosen Beijing again for the Winter Olympics in 2022. In my opinion, they don't do their homework, unless of course choosing a country with a poor record of humane treatment of animals is not important to them.

Dairy Farm Cruelty At one time I was very proud to be American. Sadly today - looking at how we treat our farm animals generally makes me realize that America has lost its way. How can we treat fellow living beings with the same basic needs as our own -the way we allow the cows in this Wisconsin dairy be treated?

In the Footsteps of St. Francis It is not news that America no longer has a true middle class. So much of our wealth has gone to the top 1 percenters. As there are givers and there are takers--these 1 percenters are clearly takers. They could learn from people of compassion like Chip Paillex.

In my opinion, this is unbelievable that in this day and age we should be moving away from animal cruelty - not embracing it for this or any other reason.

If there are Catholics among this populace, then hopefully they will have read and studied Pope Francis' encyclical "Praise be to you: On Care for Our Common Home" and take it to heart. China's Horrific Treatment of Dogs I can't help thinking about the expression - if I live to be 100 and then expressing a hope. My hope is that if I live to be a 100 the world will become more compassionate. Yes, there is a lot of human suffering, but even more - much more animal suffering for which we are the cause. We should be ashamed.
