Bringing Die-hard War Supporters and Feckless War Opponents to Their Knees

I was reminded of my mid-1960s high school days in conservative Lebanon, Pennsylvania, when I read that Senator John McCain recommended that MoveOn.org, "ought to be thrown out of this country," because it paid for a full-page ad in the New York Times, which carried the headline, "General Petraeus or General Betray Us?" McCain's outburst reminded me of the narrow-mind patriots in Lebanon, who used the illiberal cliché, "America, Love it or Leave it" to deny the patriotism of America's Vietnam War protesters.

Yet, there are at least two reasons to suspect that MoveOn's ad had merit and critics, like McCain, were wrong. First, we have Gareth Porter's exceptional reporting that General Petraeus' superior, Admiral Fallon, accused Petraeus of being "an ass-kissing little chickenshit" for serving as a "front man" for Bush's surge. Second, we have Alexander Cockburn's CounterPunch Diary report of September 15-16, 2007, in which he claims that Petraeus' testimony had been "freshly vetted and re-written by Vice President Cheney."

If Cockburn's report is accurate, then Petraeus not only lied when he asserted, "I wrote this testimony myself," he also failed to present the independent report he promised. And THAT failure should be considered a betrayal.

McCain's outburst also brings to mind the words uttered by counterterrorism expert, Michael Scheuer, during testimony to the House of Representatives on April 17, 2007. When Massachusetts Democrat Bill Delahunt told Scheuer, "You know, you are really tough on Senator McCain. You said he is 'a little man with mediocre intelligence, a taste for bullying, and an appalling temper who thinks the presidency is his birthright,'" Scheuer responded by asserting, "Sir, he is a perfect example of a man who is tremendously courageous and patriotic, but that does not necessarily correlate with brain power."

Moreover, now that the overwhelming majority of Americans believe this deadly and horrible war is lost and should never have been undertaken, were the hypothetical and illiberal question of who "ought to be thrown out of this country" ever seriously entertained (which I don't recommend), shouldn't we recommend deporting a handful of our warmongering neoconservatives to Israel, but only after shipping members of our executive branch, such as Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice, to a current-day equivalent of Elba?

More seriously, both the feckless response to the Petraeus testimony by congressional Democrats and the misplaced outrage over MoveOn among America's rightwing demonstrate that Americans must take matters into their own hands, before the war expands into Iran. After all, we still claim to be a free people, living in a democracy.

To that end, we might follow the suggestion of Harper's Garret Keizer and begin to prepare for executing a nation-wide strike. Sound impractical? Consider Keizer's October 2007 Harper's account of Danes saving Jews during World War II: "In 1943 the Danes managed to save 7,200 of their 7,800 Jewish neighbors from the Gestapo. They had no blogs, no television, no text messaging - and very little time to prepare. They passed their apartment keys to the hunted on the streets. They formed convoys to the coast. An ambulance driver set out with a phone book, stopping at any address with a Jewish-sounding name. No GPS for directions. No excuse not to try."

Although Keizer proposes a general strike for the first Tuesday in November (Election Day) to halt the slaughter in Iraq, a nation-wide shutdown in response to the invasion or bombardment of Iran seems more appropriate. Preparations for such a shutdown just might persuade the Bush administration to attempt serious, comprehensive negotiations with Tehran before expanding its war in the Middle East.

Nevertheless, Keizer's absolutely correct to ask: "Are we willing to wait until the next presidential election, or for some interim congressional conversion experience, knowing that if we do wait, hundreds of our sons and daughters will be needlessly destroyed?"

Let's demonstrate to both the war's supporters in the Bush administration and congress, as well as their feckless congressional opponents, precisely where sovereignty resides in this country.

General Strike

When I sent the below quote to a friend during an e-mail exchange, her reply was "where's the lever?"  A lot of us are in agreement with what you (and Garret Keizer) are saying.  A few bring it up but it never goes anywhere.  How can we change this and actually make it happen?
"There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!"

national strike proposal exists for impeachment - link them

Marches and demonstrations only go so far. Millions cannot travel to participate and the organizing is exhausting. If the weather is inclement, organizers are out of luck. In lieu of a national referendum, a national strike is the ultimate in the exercise of citizen power. It seems to me that these times call for just that. Let's collect the requisite pledges to strike.

Organize, organize, organize. The work is in the organizing before delivering the ultimatum. We can't just call for a date without organizing the power. First we have to get people's pledges that they will perform the strike when called upon...It will not be easy and will require sacrifice, but the times demand it. It can be organized by many multiples of groups keeping control of their own data banks, but working in harmony to enlist millions.

I don't see anything else having the power to bring our reps to their knees, having lost faith in their conscience and the vaunted power of the threat to toss them out. Where else can we turn? We can't depend on Kucinich for the game plan.

We need leadership, you, you and you... I recommend the site www.pledgetoimpeach.org We will soon be creating pledge postcard templates that can be downloaded for printing and voluminous distribution. The cards can be distributed by a named group, gathering strike pledges of 4-6 people on each card. If people don't pledge to support the strike there is no power behind our threatening one.

It is great to see more and more people giving the idea serious thought while the window of opportunity gets smaller each week. I know Cindy Sheehan is thinking on it, Brian Becker has considered it, Brad Newsham thinks it is the "next thing up."

Thanks for your article.

Pledge to Impeach at last.

For two years Pledge to Impeach has been insisting that the only force great enough to overwhelm the force coming from the powerful interests now dominating our Congress is that of a national strike.  Now, after a long road of rejection many are beginning to come to that same conclusion and it is time for people to sign on to the Pledge to Impeach Plan for Victory.  And what is the Plan?  Read on.

For any strike to be effective it must first be organized, ie. organizers must go out and bring the people together in the action so that a credible "threat of a strike" can be delivered - in this case to Congress.  Our threat will be "impeach or we strike!"  It does no good at all to announce a date for a strike and then hope people decide to take part without knowing if anyone else is with them.  A strike is merely an expression of mass solidarity.  Unless you have brought people together first, you have no force, you have no impact, you have no strength from which to negotiate.
The Plan for Victory has been shaped and honed over the last four years and is ready to go.  We have over 4,000 pledges from people in all 50 states.  What we need are for people everywhere to begin organizing locally - in their church groups, unions, alumni, community groups, until their town is on board to act when the ultimatum is delivered to Conyers - impeach or we strike.  See pledgetoimpeach.org and Read the Plan, Sign a Pledge, and Spread the Word - in other words ORGANIZE.

If you don't think it is possible, think again.  And believe in America again.  This is our greatest challenge as a people.  One we must face and defeat.  Form organizing committees and reach out and give people the confidence that comes with a plan and people who belive in it.  The rest is history.

Send in the clowns ...

... don't bother they're here." Judy Collins.

If one were to search my posts one would discover this - I have been advocating General Strikes for some time.

Buy who the hell am I? I'm not MoveOn, Huffington Post, or any of the other so-called "progressive" sites. I'm just one person who has been asking for some time what Walter Uhler is proposing. I have emailed, called and written to every so-called progressive blog there is and asked why indeed co-ordinating massive General Strikes (GS) hasn't been done?

There has been no answer.

There was a GS called for on this passed 9/11. Did anybody know? Do they even care?

GS are one of the most effective and immediate ways to grab the attention of those that normally don't give a fat-rat's-ass what we the people think.

My so-called friends. People that agree with most of what I say refuse to view DVD's like "9/11 Press for Truth", or any of evidence proving 9/11 was a lie. Roger has it right. Even people that should know better would rather have their head up their ass than see the light of day. Go see what Brittney or OJ are doing. Forget all about the over ONE MILLION INNOCENT LIVES  this administration is accountable for that are rotting in dessert graves. Never mind that you're paying nearly 3 times for gas since bush took office. No few, very few, want to know the real truth. And for the most part I can't blame them.

But I do.

Why? Because if you know the truth the comfortable world of denial becomes impossible to live in. You HAVE to act.

Well, guess what little clowns, act or not and you still won't be able to escape.
