We are organizing nationwide events to protest Bush's plan for more troops in Iraq, but it'll only happen if hardcore TrueMajority members pitch in. The mail below has details; we will be sending it out to everyone in a few days, but since I know you requested opportunites like this I'm hoping you will help get the ball rolling TODAY. This is one of the most ambitious things we have ever done -- lots of people will be willing to join in if a few courageous souls step forward first.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------- President Bush is expected to give his "new direction in Iraq" speech around Wednesday, January 10th -- and you won't like what he's planning to say. He wants to increase the number of men and women sent to Iraq, even though we just elected a new Congress to help get us out of there. We have to make it clear that Americans do NOT want more troops in Iraq and we have to act fast! Which is why I'm writing to you on a Saturday.
You've proven yourself to be one of our best activists and volunteers. Can you host an event in your community to oppose the President's troop escalation?
This is just the beginning. On January 27th, we'll be delivering a petition signed by tens of thousands of Americans at the huge March on Washington in D.C. We know not everyone can board a bus to Washington to speak out, so these local events are a great way to get everyone in your community signed on.
The Americans Say No events will be simple, and easy to host. We'll all converge on the evening after the President's speech with some ready-made signs and petitions carrying our message. You can read out the names of the servicemembers from your state who have already died in Iraq, or simply hold a silent vigil. Then, pass the petition around and be sure to take a digital photo of your event to add to an online collection.
Volunteer to lead an event by visiting http://www.AmericaSaysNo.org/lead . We've got lots of information to get you started, and more is on the way. Hosting these events is almost as simple as 1, 2, 3:
1) Pick a time and location for the event.
2) Download a host kit full of tools and ideas to make your event easy and successful.
And be sure to contact americasaysno@truemajorityaction.org with any questions or ideas about the event. It's folks like you that have lead the movement to end the war in Iraq, and together we're going to make it happen.
TrueMajority was founded by Ben Cohen, co-founder of Ben and Jerry's.
TrueMajorityACTION is a separate but closely related organization, which has a different status under U. S. law so that it can campaign for specific parties and politicians.
As of July 2005, TrueMajority claims 435,000 members; TrueMajorityACTION claims 150,000.
...and there are at least 5 people at home making that possible.
When I go back in March there will be even more, with me and at home, making it possible.
Remember the Affinity groups and Clusters of the 80s. It is time to re-employ those methods, in today's environment.
Not everyone can drop everything and head for Washington, but they can support a few people who can, and they can sign petitions, showing their support for their representatives who can go. They can remain vigilant and call their representatives and the media, if we run into problems, demanding that protesters be respected.
By the protest in March, it is my greatest wish and hope that there will be millions of us, each supported by 5 people at home.
Lets do it! A citizens' occupation of our National Mall in March, until we are heard and our demands acted upon. Let's give Democracy a chance, after all these years.
Our country, our lives and our liberty depend on it!
Hope to see many of the OpEd crowd in D.C.
Safe Journey, brothers and sisters.
