Things Most People Would Rather not Know

by Timothy V. Gatto     Page 1 of 1 page(s)

Tell A Friend

The American people need to understand one thing, and this by the way is the most important thing that they could possibly understand; there is no military solution to the problems that exist in the Middle East. We can posture and waste billions of dollars in our quest to secure a favorable outcome that will benefit this country from military confrontation, but in the end, if indeed there ever is an end, it will be a political solution and not a military one that will prevail. Iran will be convinced that it needs nuclear weapons in the face of American military threats. Pakistan will become increasingly anti-American with each passing day if we refuse to accept that they are an independent country with the right to self-determination and especially if we ignore their borders in Peshawar and bring Special Ops forces across their borders.

This is a classic American mistake. We have not learned anything from decades of military involvement in foreign countries. When is this country going to understand that we will never “win the hearts and minds” of those that oppose us through military force? This is such an elementary truth that it seems totally unbelievable that any American administration that pursues military action in order to seek a cessation of hostilities must either be insane or they have no wish to eliminate hostilities. I believe that in the case of the Middle East and Afghanistan and Pakistan, there is a greater agenda than eliminating al Qaeda or the Taliban. The United States has an agenda that they are keeping to themselves. This is something that all Americans should be wondering about as well as asking questions of our government. What is the true agenda of our policies in this area of the world?

Think of the damage that these wars have already caused not only to the nations involved but also to our own country. We are borrowing almost two billion dollars a day from the Chinese and the Japanese to fund these wars. Our reputation in the world has sunk to an all-time low, greater than the blowback of the Vietnam debacle. Instead of the world seeing us as a beacon of democracy and freedom, they see us as a nation hell-bent on conquest and see our nation as one that is fast approaching a police state. Great Britain has already become a police state, with cameras at every intersection and laws that restrict cameras in “sensitive” areas. Many Americans returning from England warn others that it isn’t a pleasant place to take a vacation.

We in this country have already built more than 90 internment camps throughout this country. This is common knowledge yet nobody has written anything substantial about what these camps will be used for. Is this a development that people would rather not speak about? Why have we signed a military pact wit India to share military knowledge and conduct joint military maneuvers along with the sharing of nuclear technology without a debate in Congress? Where are we going with these things? Why are we using mercenaries in our wars overseas that operate outside the rule of law?

The most fantastic part of this entire scenario is that the so-called Presidential Candidates do not address these things. They talk about issues like Social Security, immigration, education and other “safe” subjects without mentioning the very things that the mainstream media refuses to report about in detail. John Edwards “alludes” to the corporate take-over of our media and government without going into too much detail about how they finance and support candidates that call for higher defense budgets and a get-tough policy with those that don’t agree with us. Ron Paul talks about the civil liberties we have lost and how the government operates outside of the Constitution. So far the majority of Americans have hardly listened to them at all. Is it because Americans really don’t want to know what our government is doing because the answer might be too upsetting to them or is it because people have been dumbed down by the mainstream media to the point where they believe that Paul and Edwards are “making these things up”?

People reading this already know what I’m talking about. It is truly a shame that the only people that will read pieces such as this are people that already know “what time it is”. Just once I wish that I could write an Op-Ed on The New York Times or have an article in Time or Newsweek that people in the mainstream could read. Of course they wouldn’t print any articles of mine, I’ve already tried. It makes no matter that I probably have more readers than some of their staffers at the magazines, all of my readers are part of the “Crazy fringe left” as they call us. So I go on preaching to the choir and hope that in some small way I am doing my part to wake this country up before the train goes off the rails.

That’s the way I see it.

Well Mr. Tim...............

the way I look at it is, the elitist don't want it to seem simple as we know it to be. It's called job justification in laymen terms. So they stir the pot, inject some castrophies, magnify the results and dramatize the reports..............end result......Capitalism............"Believe it or Not"........people make careers at this and are damn good at it..........it all began years ago in the movie making industry when it was discovered that in the falacy of bordem, people would pay top dollar to be entertained........

For example, you remember years ago all the "World War II" movies would keep you sitting on the edge of your seat, your heart pounding and you were wishing you were there and had a Thompson Machine Gun ripping through those dirty Germans?.................then later here comes "Full Metal Jacket" and we relived it all again.......................what's a good name for it.......Ahhhh..............Mesmerized.......that's it.....we were Mesmerized..........

One comment I will never forget that rang through the air when I heard Dubya say it............." We're gonna smoke'm out and run'em down"...........He should've continued to say "Playing at local theaters now"..........since then, it has been the biggest Box Office Buster of all times..................................................................................

One at a time

Is it because Americans really don’t want to know what our government is doing because the answer might be too upsetting to them or is it because people have been dumbed down by the mainstream media to the point where they believe that Paul and Edwards are “making these things up”?

Every day I talk to someone about this stuff. At the coffee shop, the hardware store, my music students parents, my business neighbors, anyone I can. On sheer percentages, my feedback is not good. Not because most folks can't comprehend all the info available, but that they choose not to look. They don't think Paul and Edwards points are “making these things up” because quite frankly, most of them don't want to think about it. They are busy with life, kids, working hard to pay their mortgages, food, gas, overextended and trying to just keep up. Dicussing all that is occuring 'outside' their world of necessities is too much to swallow because it doesn't fit into the grind.

There is a positive to report however. about 10% (my guess, a running mental record) actually do take time to check stuff out. And when they do almost all of them find something that forces them to look deeper. Some of them come back with info I missed or notice in a way that I hadn't. So, the fact that this occurs is why I am emboldened to keep throwing it out there. We must.

1 out of 10 is 1 more. And 1 more. And 1 more.

It takes effort to do anything. It you don't look you won't see. And Mr. Gatto, in using your name to look for on OpEd, one of those folks upon reading an article you penned about our civil liberties was all he needed to get started. Now he's bringing me stuff. It's a start. Please don't ever think it's just the choir. New voices to added..one at a time. We only need look at ourselves to find the proof.

     peace

big topic well summarized

This is something I have been pushing for years before I joined OpEd news.

Mikel is largely right. To refine it more there are at least 2 more pertinant factors.

1. If it doesn't effect them personally they're too busy.

2. Emotional/information overload in days gone by it was easier to get the public's attention now there has to be dramatic attention grabber. Darfur is an example telling people 1/2 million people has died there gets little response show a starving photogenic  child and the phones run hot....It must be something that people can identify with.

The west's history in the Middle east is trully horrific and you are right violence begets escalating violence. Israel is a long way away from down town USA. But 4000 local boys and gils in Iraq is an issue.

One can complain about this...do the 1 at a time thing for ever or plan campaigns that will 'personalize' the issues.

Well spoke Tim what we need is viable solutions

Reply: PS hysteria and shrill chicken little cries don't help

One of the reasons we (progressives) are seen as part of the lunatic fringe are those (not you) who get hyper and make the most extraordinary claims, plots,  convoluted and rediculous conspiracies.  A small number can spoil it for the majority.

Reply: reminder to personalize a plus..always

     Andris. Thanx for reminder.

If I'm talkin to a contractor/builder, it is a good guess they will respond more so to the 9/11 Newton thing as opposed to HR 1959. Likewise the many parents who bring their kids to my shop for music lessons, they respond when I remember how they support free expression and offer up info on free speech zones being used to control dissent. Anything offered with consideration of who the recipient is increases the chance of interest.

      Pics do wonders.

Well I Read Your Articles.

Well said Mr. Gatto, and with the historical lies that have been made and are stacked higher than all the dead bodies America has created throughout time, it is a wonder that it is still United. Really the United States of Murder, and Shock is the national anthem isn't it?  Presidential races are really photo-op sessions of models who will support the lies of the past.

In fact Tim, I wouldn't fret over not being published by their media outlets, if you were it would tell me you are doing something wrong. I have come to the conclusion they are people with no sense of right or wrong. I feel safer in the jungle surrounded by lions than to live in America.

It is so utterly disgusting, horrific, and sad.  I never thought America would end up like this, but in fact it has, and there is really no changing it.  With all the political blunders, and with all the crimes committed, even hearing today some lunatic killed his girlfriend in Texas carved her up and had her cooking on the stove with a plate of her to eat.. is totally beyond the scope of a civilized society.  So much for LBJ and the Great Society right?

What I really support is non violence. Why can't people learn this? What is our hangup?

Take Care Mr. Gatto, and thanks for your article. I do read them.
