The Real "Latest in Sunday Talk"

I just sat through five hours of Sunday News and Talk. I learned that “Clean Coal” is the best, that “The Partnership for Prescription Assistance” the PPA is “There to Help”, that Marathon is expanding their refinery in Louisiana to bring us “Clean Fuel” and plastics are “Essential” to our country’s growth. Meanwhile, the rest of what I saw on the shows were that everyone has knowledge of what took place in politics and World events, but nobody knows what any of it means. The lights are on, but no one is home.

On “Face the Nation”, Retired General Anthony Zinni (USMC) was on and he told Bob that the War in Iraq is a very complicated issue. Everyone else on his “roundtable” discussion group was very candid and all expressed the same opinion. Gee, that was swell. They all wondered if this “lessening of violence” in Iraq was a real sign of progress or would the violence ratchet up again? They talked about Iran and the current “lull” in cross-border tensions with the US. Gee, that’s swell too. They all talked of whether or not the US and Israel would launch a pre-emptive strike on Iran for seeking nuclear knowledge. They thought that it wasn’t in the cards just yet. I’m so relieved. Is it me or are you all getting drained by being a citizen of the country that is the ruler of the world? Who said we have to follow the UN Charter? That’s for other nations that don’t have the awesome responsibility we have of ruling the world. Apparently all of Bob Scheiffer’s guests were all quite comfortable with it. Sometimes I believe that I should have stayed in school longer, maybe I’d understand. Traveling to every continent but Africa didn’t teach me a thing.

After seeing how the auto companies are keeping the planet pristine with their new auto plants, it was on to “Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer”. Wolf was really into talking with Mike Huckabee. What a likable fellow that “Huck” is. He was so proud to say that he was “part” of the Reagan/Bush “revolution”. We have done so well with those principles, haven’t we? Ole “Hick” is a bible-thumper of the first degree. I wonder where someone like me fits in with his vision of Christian splendor. I guess I’d have to do what most other Christians in the party do. I’ll go to church every Sunday and be good, while Monday through Saturday I’d take everything from everyone, all I could get away with.

Wolf was on with a panel of “political experts” talking about Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama. So we know now that it’s between her and him. Forget about Edwards, it’s all about them. Its ok with me, I’ve heard both say so many things that I know now that they agree with everybody on everything. Isn’t that just great! They just don’t agree with each other.

The Annapolis Peace Conference was on everyone’s mind. Seems everyone believes that since every participant is so “weak” that the outlook could be rosy for a Middle East peace settlement between Israel and Palestine. That just makes me want to wet my pants. Who cares about Iraq, only one GI is dying per day and only 364 Iraqi civilians were killed last week. Isn’t that great news? The violence is down to where it was in September of 2006! Man, with numbers like that we could stay indefinitely and continue to spend ourselves back to the Bronze Age! Meanwhile Blitzer tried to get the Palestinian representative to announce “conditions” for the upcoming Annapolis Peace Conference and tried the same thing with the Israeli Representative. Good thing they kept their mouths shut. Wolf could have sunk the whole thing trying to get a “sound bite”.

Seriously though folks, what’s with all the “pundits” on TV? The simple acceptance of the fact that we are occupying Iraq and threatening Iran isn’t mentioned at all? Blitzer even has the audacity to ask someone that wrote some book about the Iraq War, what’s behind the sectarian violence there? Gee, did it have to do with invading the country and occupying it? That’s like Hitler asking Mussolini why the Polish people resent the German People in 1939. I could see Hitler fingering his mustache and telling Benito, “Those Poles are so unpredictable!” Meanwhile Wolf asked an Aussie (or maybe British?) I didn’t get his name, who said that in al-An bar province where he embedded himself with Sunni Militias if this was a “blueprint” for getting “insurgents” on our side. The guy looked at Blitzer like he had two heads and told him that they want no part of the Iraqi Government and that the only reason that 72,000 of the militia members are helping the US is because 42,000 are on the US payroll, and they are just waiting for US Forces to withdraw so that they can “get back to business”.

What a freaking fiasco. I can’t believe that Americans sit there and watch the tube and listen to the things that come out of it. I guess they just can’t change the channel because their thumbs’ are up their…

That’s the way I see it.

Chomsky often talks about exactly this when he decries the

debased level of "intellectual and moral culture in the United States." These pundits & "experts," sitting around on TV yakking calmly about whether we should invade this country or that one; whether our occupation is going nicely or not -- all of this without so much as a mention of our responsibilities under the UN Charter -- this is a perfect example of how US intellectual culture proceeds from the unspoken "assumption that we own the world." (Also a favorite Chomsky phrase.)

I don't know how you managed to sit through 5 hours of this stuff. You have a stronger stomach than I do.
