Shirley Golub, who is seriously challenging Nancy Pelosi for the Democratic party primary nomination in San Francisco on June 3, is sponsoring the production of a new impeachment passion play, "I" - The Impeachment Trial of George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney, cowritten by premier impeachment scholar Bruce Fein, gifted dramatist Richard A. Lasser and this writer.
Director Ray Whelan, who has produced and appeared in 50 plays himself, has been engaged to oversee the production, which will be holding auditions and starting rehearsal within a day or so, with an anticipated opening in early May.
We are already getting inquiries from other groups all over the country interested in mounting their own parallel productions of this ground-breaking, and perhaps historic new work. And that is why we are posting a link to the full final script here.
Why do a play, don't we want impeachment for real? We're sure if everyone had a chance to hear Bruce Fein speak so articulately and passionately about the urgency of impeachment the public would cry out for it. We're sure if everyone had the evidence and all the facts laid out in one big picture the case for impeachment would be compelling to all.
But just as not that many people saw the talk that Al Gore was giving on climate change, until it was made into the movie "An Inconvenient Truth", with this play we can dramatically bring the constitutional insight of Bruce Fein, as if he were speaking all over the country, and all those overwhelming indicting facts to a much larger audience.
We see this as an inspirational and mobilizing vehicle, as a life imitates art opportunity. And in particular, if we can turn the production of this play into a cultural media phenomenon, we believe it will bring serious discussion of impeachment and its critical urgency to the main stream at last, and may in fact be the catalyst that actually makes impeachment happen.
Of course nothing would give more impetus to the movement for impeachment than if Pelosi were to lose to Shirley Golub in the June 3 CA primary. So please do check out everything else that Shirley is doing on her site.
Just so everyone knows, Cindy Sheehan is still planning on running in the November general election as an independent. But there had to be a primary challenge as well, and Cindy has posted a very graceful statement on her web site that "in a perfect world" there would be a primary challenge too.
That is what Shirley Golub is doing, because a victory there on June 3 puts impeachment back on the table immediately, for if the Speaker of the House can be seriously challenged within her own party because of her obstructionism and constitutional dereliction of duty, so too with any of them in the future.
