Three weeks ago in the aftermath of the surrender on the Alito nomination we put out a call for a challenger to rise up to oppose Ben Nelson in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senator. Still no one has stepped forward with the courage to do so. It has always been our premise that if our representatives would not listen to the voice of the people, then they must be replaced by others who will. Sadly, with regards to the horrific Alito nomination senator Nelson was again the first one to cave in. There can be no higher priority than for the people of Nebraska to have a positive alternative.
Now that he has been so unwisely allowed to ascend to the Supreme Court without a fight, Alito has wasted no time in recruiting the most extreme ideologues he can find as clerks to write his opinions. We saw it coming. You saw it coming. But despite the urgent pleas of thousands and thousands of their constituents, 19 of our Democratic senators still refused to exercise the power we elected them to have, the right of filibuster to protect us from yet another terrible appointment.
What are you going to do about it Nebraska? Are you happy with Nelson's votes on the bankruptcy bill, the class action bill, CAFTA? The list goes on and on. He was the ONLY democrat to vote FOR Janice Rogers Brown, the first of the reactionary judges that were rammed through because of the cowardice of the Democrats in not taking a stand. What fearless citizen of Nebraska will now step forward to say "I can do a better job?"
You must understand there are many of your fellow citizens who feel just the way you do. They are so disgusted with our Senate they are talking about sitting out the next election altogether. The ONLY way we can win in 2006 is by having a strong positive choice to engage people back into the process. A real debate in the primary will boost voter turnout in the general election leading to INCREASED prospects for the candidate who prevails.
But for any of this to happen someone must have the courage to stand up the way our representatives SHOULD have been standing up all along. Be ye not concerned where you will get the money to run. We will show you how you can build a people-based campaign with no money and win. All that is required is for you to say to yourself right now, "I would be better senator for Nebraska then Ben Nelson."
