The article above covers the origins of a beautiful 19th century work penned in Baghdad by a dreamer of exquisite dreams. Please read it before proceeding to my comments:

We have come to a region of the world with our bombastic "Christ", our bellicose "God", and proclaimed ourselves The Way, The Truth and The Life to people who have had these wonderful influences and traditions unknown to us. We have claimed all-Power and found ourselves powerless to do anything but kill and maim and hypocritize our way to imperialistic, thus illusory and fraudulent, goals. Yet, when it is over, we will not have known the People and their varied, deep, often sweet understandings.

We will leave their "valleys" perplexed and unfulfilled, with our waxwings destroyed, yet scheming on with hubris and impossible dreams of false thunder, false progress, false civilization, false destiny, leaving behind not only a trail of destruction and death and devastation and disillusion, but also undiscovered beautiful mysteries of the soul and spirit and, yes, Earth.
