200 Lashes For Saudi Woman's Crime of Being Raped Seems a Bit Harsh

by Sandy Sand     Page 1 of 2 page(s)

Tell A Friend

Not only is there no protection or leniency for a Saudi woman who is a rape victim, but it isn't safe to be her attorney.

Amazing isn't it?  When the Saudis think there's an emergency that they perceive is a threat to them, they have no compunctions about summoning Dick Cheney to waste zillions of pounds of jet fuel to chew out the veep's ass, and dictate to him what he/we should do to save their butts.

Cheney drops everything, fires up the engines of Air Force 2, traverses the Atlantic, and upon his arrival he bows and scrapes and kisses the hems of their oil-stained robes, only to say yes, sir, whatever you say, sir, hop back on his jet and leave another polluting contrail in his wake on the trip home.

But when it comes to something unimportant, such as HUMAN RIGHTS, both he and George Bush are chronically, sickeningly silent.

So silent, when in the case of a 19-year-old minority Shiite woman, was sentenced to 90 lashes after being kidnapped and gang raped by six men while she was in the company of a male who was not a relative, that their silence wasn't golden, it was black and remains so.

According to strict Sharia Islamic law, a woman  cannot be alone in the company of an unrelated male.  The fact that she was the victim of a heinous crime, in the eyes of Sharia law, she committed a worse crime

Not only was she sentenced to 90 lashes for her crime, but when she and her attorney objected to the punishment and brought it to the attention of the press, her sentence was upped to 200 lashes.

Even her husband, in an unheard of act of speaking out publicly, came to her defense and protested the severe punishment meted out by the court.

Her attorney, Abdul Rahman al-Lahem, who is also a human right activist, said he has been banned from handling this case and his licence to practice law was suspended, because challenged the verdict.

Al-Lahem said he's been summoned to appear before the disciplinary committee of the Ministry of Justice in December.

It wouldn't be the least bit surprising if these Stone Age brains don't add the insult of 201 lashes to the injury of his punishment of losing his license.

This insane, ridiculously harsh punishment flies in the face of King Abdullah saying he's on a quest to introduce reform to the Saudis justice system, which is also contradicted by his approving a new body of laws regulating the judicial system, which is based on Sharia law.

Laws force women to cover head-to-toe in public and forbids them from driving.  Half their population is subjugated and beaten into the ground by harsh, restrictive laws.

Ninety lashes or 200, this isn't punishment; it's torture, which is perfectly alright with the Torturer-in-Chief and his torturing veep.

What if it were their wives, especially Cheney's with her big mouth and salacious pen?  Come to think of it, covering Laura and her too short pants suit jackets and plastic painted on smile might not be all that bad.

How does someone survive 200 lashes?  If this poor woman who is now a double victim passes out from the pain, will she be revived so she can continue to enjoy the fruits of her crime?

200?

It is torture and is highly doubtful, unless they are lashing her with wet noodles, that anyone could survive such a bloody beating. Shock alone would kill the average strong and husky male, saying nothing og the bleeding, infection and scaring.

It is torture thing only thing that gives such men an erection (I include Cheney in that comment, and his boss.).

beyond heartbreaking

Beyond heartbreaking.  And next her husband?  It would be nice to have a 2 dimensional map of the planet that measured regions of insaity by shades of red.

I once took a job in a mental word during a college summer (didn't make much money!) for the "experience"  I wanted to find out first hand what that reality was like.  I learned two things:  (1.)  95% of the conversations were about God and sex, and (2.) the "aides" and "nurses" were more dead than the patients.

Religious insanity and torture are like inbreath and outbreath.

A writer is a rogue goose. All other gees fly in a flock formation; every goose knows his place and time for honking. The rogue goose is undisciplined. He leaves the formation indiscriminately to have a look at it from aside. He roams back and forth, takes a peep at the leader, honks a little bit from behind, distracts everyone and writes on what he sees. Time passes and as he wants to return back to his place he discovers someone else there. Thus he either has to wait until they land for rest...

From 1860s Russia

' Yeesterday, about 6pm I happened to pass by the Sennaya Square..

And there was  a woman whipped publicly, a young country girl,

She uttered not a word of pain, just you could hear the whip ...

And I told my muse- Look at her, that's your sister...

Nicholai Nekrasov,1860s

We studied this poem in school.  Maybe if American  students study something like that  they would have someone better than Cheney, the birdkiller...  From him, though, what can we expect, really?

PappyHarpist, unemployed blue collar worker, and Bush basher living deep in the heart of Texas.

I agree...

...that this is a shocking, outrageous thing. However, to even think that the dud-namic-duo of DUBYA and Dick(LESS) would do anything other than licking the sandy, oily boot heels of Saudis shouldn't be surprising in the least.

After all, was it not Saudi terrorists that attacked us on 9/11? Didn't DUBYA say he would wave his private parts at any country that sponsored terrorism or harbored terrorists? What ever became of that?

Oh, yeah, he blamed the terrorism on and attacked one of the most progressive Muslim countries in the world: Iraq. He and the rest of his rich-bitch butt buddies decided it was better for the world to squash a progressive Muslim country than it was to slap the shit out of a KNOWN terrorist state; specifically Saudi Arabia. I suppose the fact that Saudi Arabia holds approximately ten percent of the American Economy in the pockets of their white, flowing, robes was a serious reason to not look in THEIR direction.

Who cares about their human rights violations? Who cares about their support of terrorists and terrorist organizations? Not DUBYA! Not Dick(LESS)! Money talks!

It is sad that in a time when we can go into space at will, there are still countries that meter out their justice in such a draconian way. Unfortunately, this is exactly what's happening.

I guess that should make us all a little less interested in allowing a christian theocracy to be allowed to bloom here. At least, I hope such will be the case.

Blessed be!
Pappy

And the Chinese hold most of the rest...

...and that's why we don't go after them on civil and human rights issues.

I suppose the fact that Saudi Arabia holds approximately ten percent of the American Economy in the pockets of their white, flowing, robes was a serious reason to not look in THEIR direction.

That's also why they were allowed to flee the country when no one else was allowed to fly after 9/11.

She would probably have another 200 lashes added on for the crime of passing out. And these are the people who are sending a foreign minister to the Annapolis peace talks. Partners in peace? Not for women, evidently.
