VOA: “A trusted source of news and information since 1942”?

The Voice of America (VOA) claims to be “A trusted source of news and information since 1942”. While World War II audiences may have held the VOA in high regard, today’s Iraq War audiences know that the VOA has become a neo-conservative (neo-Trotskyite) broadcaster of lies and of propaganda. The VOA broadcasts in foreign languages lies and propaganda the American government does not communicate in English to American citizens.

On March 14, 2007, anyone who knows Persian (Farsi) and who watches Persian language television programs via international satellite dish, was able to see the Voice of America promoting a spokesperson for the Iranian MEK (Rajavi Cult or Pol Pot of Iran). The MEK is a terrorist organization on terrorist lists of the American Department of State (since the administration of former President Bill Clinton) and on terrorist lists in Europe. The MEK has murdered American military officers, Rockwell International employees, and large numbers of Iranian and Iraqi civilians. The MEK was involved in a terrorist act in New York City.

Iraq Government’s Message to America: Trials for the MEK

The neo-conservatives (neo-Trotskyites) claimed that America must invade Iraq to export democracy. Instead, the American military remains an occupying force to prevent the Iraqi government from representing the desires of the Iraqi people.

The Iraqi people know well that the MEK in 1991 killed large numbers of Iraqi civilians to please Saddam Hussein. The MEK murdered large numbers of Kurds, for example, by forcing the Kurds to stand in lines along roads while MEK tanks or armored personnel carriers (supplied by Saddam Hussein) ran over the Kurds. Leaders of the Rajavi Cult had ordered the MEK terrorists not to waste any bullets on killing Kurds. The leaders of the Rajavi Cult wanted to save the bullets for an invasion of Iran.

The Iraqi government continues to demand that it be able to place on trial all MEK terrorists involved in the 1991 atrocities and to expel from Iraq all other MEK terrorists living at Camp Ashraf, Iraq (protected by the Bulgarian and American military). The American occupying forces continue to deny the requests of the Iraqi government.

While these facts are well-known in Iraq and in Iran, how many Americans have ever heard or read about these facts in English in America, a country claiming to have freedom of the press?

VOA Interviewed Terrorist Spokesperson

While the VOA could have interviewed American political leaders or Americans who are opposed to the MEK terrorists, the VOA chose to interview only Alireza Jafarzadeh, a long-time spokesperson for the MEK terrorists.

For many years, Alireza Jafarzadeh operated in the National Press Building, in Washington, D.C., a press office for the MEK under the name of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI). Former Secretary of State Colin Powell insisted that the American government close this terrorist office. Former Attorney General John Ashcroft (a supporter of the MEK) was the Attorney General when the American government raided the home of Alireza Jafarzadeh and removed boxes of his documents. Has even one American television network, newspaper, or magazine ever demanded under the Freedom of Information Act copies of these documents?

After losing his position with the NCRI, Alireza Jafarzadeh became a foreign affairs analyst for the Fox News Channel. At his Strategic Policy Consulting Web site, Jafarzadeh’s biography includes:

“Alireza Jafarzadeh is the president of Strategic Policy Consulting, Inc. He is also a FOX News Channel Foreign Affairs Analyst.

Alireza Jafarzadeh is the author of “The Iran Threat: President Ahmadinejad and the Coming Nuclear Crisis” (Palgrave Macmillan, January 2007).”

The Voice of America permitted Alireza Jafarzadeh to disseminate disinformation to Persian speakers around the world: (1) The MEK’s fewer than 4,000 terrorists at Camp Ashraf, Iraq are helping America to prevent Iran from taking over Iraq. (2) The Iraqi government cannot expel the MEK terrorists from Camp Ashraf, Iraq because the Fourth Geneva Convention (protecting civilians) protects the MEK terrorists. The Voice of America showed undated scenes of MEK terrorists with weapons able to stop automobiles on a road in Iraq. When American and coalition forces attacked Camp Ashraf in April 2003 (killing some of the MEK terrorists), the American military claimed that it had disarmed the terrorists.

Professor, California State University, Fullerton

After marriage to an Iranian lady in Tehran, Iran in 1968, I returned to Tehran in the summer of 1970 to work at the American Embassy. After earning an MBA from Harvard Business School, I remained at Harvard University for another year to study the Persian (Farsi) language. In the early 1970's, Singer Sewing Machine Company sent me on assignments in the Middle East and North Africa, including assignments in Tehran, Iran.

From 1994 to 1996, I was a professor at Sultan Qaboos University in the Sultanate of Oman. This gave me an opportunity to present papers at academic conferences in the United Arab Emirates and in Turkey. Also, I was able to speak to audiences in Iran and to teach English in Iran during vacations to the Islamic Republic of Iran in 1995 and 1996.

My wife makes frequent trips to the Islamic Republic of Iran. In our home in California, we have an international satellite dish providing access to television stations from a large number of countries in the world, including approximately 20 Persian (Farsi) language stations.
