Last Friday, the Republican governor of Texas issued an executive order mandating that all schoolgirls get vaccinated against a sexually transmitted disease known to cause cancer.
By ordering that schoolgirls be vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV), Gov. Rick Perry bypassed the will of the people and the entire Texas legislature.
Isn't this benevolent of Mr. Perry?
Hardly. The only vaccine for HPV currently out on the market is Gardasil, by Merck & Co.
Hmmm... That's funny, Merck is on a crusade to mandate HPV vaccinations across the country and the pharmaceutical giant gave $6,000 to Perry through its political action committee during his re-election campaign.
The vaccine is absolutely worthless as a medical treatment according to top docs in the alternative health field, and the so-called "science" supporting the vaccine as the only prevention for cervical cancer is an outright fraud.
But the story gets even more interesting when you start connecting the dots.
Mike Toomey, one of three Merck lobbyists in Texas, formerly served as chief of staff to the governor. In other words, Gov. Perry has a confidant who works for Merck, the Big Pharma company that helped fund his re-election campaign, and suddenly Perry uses dictatorial power to mandate mass vaccinations with a drug that will make millions for ONE COMPANY: Merck.
Drug companies are experts at framing their profit pursuits as public health initiatives. "We have to protect the little girls!" they insist, but what's really going on behind closed doors is a far less altruistic manipulation -- pure profiteering.
The seemingly good Samaritan vaccine mandate just happens to generate enormous profits for Merck, but Merck officials, and even the governor of Texas, would have you focus on warm-and-fuzzy feelings. Apparently they overlook or ignore the fact that Merck will earn obscene profits from taxpayers for this initiative.
What's happening right now in Texas is Big Pharma tyranny, and it is likely the beginning of a monumental battle between personal freedoms vs. the corporate-controlled State.
If we let Texas get away with this outrage, more states will follow suit. Merck is currently lobbying hard to pass similar measures in over twenty other states, and if we don't stop them in Texas, Merck will buy other governors and puppet them to make the same declarations in their states.
What can we do?
I say we fight Big Pharma tyranny by exposing it. You can take action to spread the word on this issue. POST this cartoon to your website and LINK to our articles on this topic. We give you full permission to reprint this cartoon and forward it to your friends.
Unlike Merck, we don't care about the intellectual property royalties on this comic. Make as many copies as you want. Print up T-shirts. Add it to your book. Use it as you wish, and you don't owe me a dime.

Questioning some of the medical claims in this article.
Merck profits aside, the HPV virus has been shown to be the main cause of cervical cancer. The author provides no evidence for the proposed natural measures, or the claim that the vaccine is "worthless as a treatment." (Of course it's not a treatment - it's a vaccine.)
While Merck is pushing for one side of the issue, the Religious Right is pushing for the other side, claiming the vaccine encourages promiscuity. I don't think they have girls' interests at heart, either.
