Dennis Kucinich, Bill Richardson & UFOs: The 'other' Alien Question in the 2008 Presidential Election

Tell A Friend

In her latest book, Sage-Ing While Age-Ing, Shirley MacLaine recollects an evening with Dennis Kucinich at her home in Graham Washington where she described him having a UFO sighting. She writes: “"Dennis found his encounter extremely moving. The smell of roses drew him out to my balcony where, when he looked up, he saw a gigantic triangular craft, silent, and observing him. It hovered, soundless, for 10 minutes or so, and sped away with a speed he couldn't comprehend. He said he felt a connection in his heart and heard directions in his mind." Predictably, there was much media interest in MacLaine's comments regarding Kucinich’s UFO sighting. An October 23 article in the Cleveland based, Plain Dealer, describes how repeated calls to Kucinich’s office for confirmation of MacLaine’s recollection went unanswered.

So it was not surprising that in the Democratic Presidential debate on October 30, Kucinich was asked by the moderator, Tim Russert, about his sighting. Russert first recounted MacLaine’s version of what Kucinich experienced and then asked whether he had seen a UFO. Kucinich's clear affirmation to Russert’s question confirmed her account. It suggested that the sighting was a deeply moving and 'directive' experience for him. Kucinich did not elaborate on the heartfelt connection with the UFO or the mental directions he received. His comments about moving his campaign office to Roswell, and comparing poll numbers of UFO believers with Bush's popularity rating was an awkward attempt to defuse an issue he wanted to evade for obvious political reasons. MacLaine's recollection, however, suggests that Kucinich privately thinks very seriously about the UFO issue, given its 'hearts and minds' effect on him.

Back in September after a conference discussing UFO’s in the Washington D.C. metro area, Kucinich staffer Natalie Laber, was asked by Washington Post reporter, Dana Milbank, about Kucinich's knowledge of UFOs. She told him to "keep your silly comments to yourself." In his subsequent story, Milbank referred to efforts to ‘out’ Kucinich about his UFO beliefs. So MacLaine has effectively ‘outed’ Kucinich on the UFO issue, an issue that poses considerable political challenges for him.

Another democratic presidential candidate was asked about the UFO question in a post-debate interview on MSNBC. Chris Matthews asked Bill Richardson whether he believed in the existence of UFOs. Richardson said he hadn't seen one and that “there is no credible evidence” for them. However, he went on to claim that the “Federal Government has not come clean at all on that issue and it should.” An incredulous Russert asked Richardson, “Did you say the United States government is covering up a history of the UFO sighting in your state?” Richardson replied: “they [the government] don’t produce documents, Chris. They should just get it all out, and there’s a known history about this.”

In an earlier town hall meeting in Round Rock Texas, Richardson was asked whether he would pledge to release files on the Roswell UFO crash. He responded, “"I remember I had my constituents ask me. I was the congressman and I said, 'Well, Department of Defense, Los Alamos labs, what is this? What is the data you have?'" Richardson said the official reply was: "Oh, it's classified." He said: "That ticked me off." So a series of jocular questions by Tim Russert and Chris Matthews to democratic candidates on UFO’s has brought out into the Presidential election the issue of the government not disclosing all it knows about UFOs.

The 2002 Roper Poll showed approximately 70% of the American public believe the “Government does not tell everything it knows about UFOs and extraterrestrial life.” The most famous UFO incident was one that Richardson referred to at the Round Rock meeting, and involved the Government withholding documents. This was the famous Roswell incident which gained world wide attention after a July 8, 1947 press release issued by the Roswell Army Air Field that a flying saucer had crashed. The story quickly died down after more senior Army officials said that the crash debris was in fact a weather balloon. Public interest was renewed in 1978 after the senior military intelligence officer involved in investigating the incident, Major Jesse Marcel, claimed that the crash involved a flying saucer after all. More recently, a posthumously released affidavit by Walter Haut, the Public Information Officer at Roswell responsible for releasing the initial Flying Saucer report, declared that the crash involved extraterrestrial life forms and an advanced egg shaped vehicle. He claims he actually sighted the vehicle and bodies, and that the Pentagon ordered a cover up by issuing conflicting press releases.

The UFO question poses considerable difficulties for any Presidential candidate desiring mainstream support, as evidenced by Kucinich’s and Richardson’s jocular yet awkward responses to questions. There is nevertheless much evidence that the government knows much more than it's telling the public. Bill Richardson is now on the record that the US government is withholding important documents that will settle once and for all what actually happened in the Roswell incident. Dennis Kucinich is also on the record for having seen a UFO and will in future have to elaborate further on his experience and what it would mean if he won the Presidency. Meanwhile Shirley MacLaine, an avid believer in extraterrestrial life, has demonstrated a remarkable propensity for Sage-Ing While Age-Ing.

UFOs

I have reread this article a couple of times now and I still believe that the real issue for all of us has to do with the degree of government secrecy we are faced with all the time. During the debate, Hillary had a hard time explaining why the documents between herself and Bill are still archived and we know how much Bush and company keep secret. Secrets automatically create an us and them approach to the world. In many ways I find Dennis' nondisclosure about the UFO experience to be more about his friendship with Shirley Maclaine than about how he feels about UFOs. But that is just my sense of it all.

Another Attempt to Marginalize Kucinich

Apart from the question of one's beliefs about UFOs and the government's knowledge or suspicion about them, this question should never have been asked. It was rude, irrelevant and designed only to further marginalize the only Democratic candidate for President who understands the fundamental truth of human existence that war is not a viable option. Period.

In the interest of full disclosure, I happen to believe not only in UFOs and their extraterrestrial origins but in the massive coverup in which the government has engaged for decades. I also understand the reasons for the coverup. I have had two UFO sightings myself.

But Shirley MacLaine is hardly an established, bona fide author on such matters. Whether or not she recalled the incident correctly seems open to question. Every other candidate on the platform has had strange and even dangerous charges leveled against them by someone's book. Yet Russert doesn't ask Hillary about best-selling books attacking her integrity and honesty, doesn't question John Edwards about his haircuts and the money he is claimed to have taken from the defense bar, or Obama about his early childhood education and its Muslim nature, all of which are at least as (ir)relevant as questions about Kucinich's experiences with and beliefs about UFOs.

The mainstream press is sanctimonious about negative campaigning while carrying on the practice with impunity under the "free press" banner. This is just another example of not wanting to be too hard on the presumptive nominee and resorting to "minor" candidates to spice up the news.

Russert should be ashamed.

Perspective please perspective

I wrote books on Antegowobblers (the tooth fairy money tree gardeners) for my when they were young children.

I was even a trained professional Astrologer at one time (in the early 70’s it was a great way to meet girls).

Do I believe in Astrology as anything more than an amusing addition to my morning coffee ?

In aliens? Beings that have the ability to alter the laws of physics, beings that come all this way to express an anus fetish? To cross breed with a lesser species? To them we must appear similar as Bonobo’s do to us. Or to perform surgery on animals that is so sloppy as it would embarrass a Neanderthal? Surely if they (the aliens) have possess all this amazing technology they’d have more unobtrusive, less primitive ways of anatomic examination and why the almost obssesive  need to continually perform it anyway Hmmmm?

I guess it’s no sillier than Nancy Regan's horoscopes.

Shirley Mclean is/was a brilliant actor but that doesn't automatically make her a paragon for anything else. After all she's not trying to run the country (the free world), finger on the button.

In the interest of disclosure I remain unconvinced.

Nor do I subscribe to bizarre and unsubstantiated and unsustainable conspiracy theories. (Ben Franklin said it best “three people can keep a secret ….when two of them are dead”).

Where is the proof?  Not the dubious nonsense I've seen at conventions from alleged experts and on TV, the actual unambiguous scientific proof.

I wonder where's the line,  consider "Heaven’s Gate", " White Supremacy",  "Scientology" and  the improbable origins/ teachings and beliefs of other latter day religions.

One is entitled to ask what  is the psychological  motivation behind the need for such beliefs?

One can only guess at the context of Denis Kucinich’s revelation. But one would hope that such potential leaders weren’t subject to real subscription to such illogical reasoning….. the world depends on his/her rationality.

In the final analysis."Give to God what is God's and To Man what is Man's." and the wisdom to at least Keep the two separate.

Bill Richardson and the Government UFO Cover Up

While I can understand the reasons for the various responses to Kucinich being posed the UFO question, the fact is that other candidates have been asked similar questions. Obama Barack was asked during the debate itself about extraterrestrial life, Bill Richardson and Joe Biden were also asked in the post-debate interview with Chris Mathews. Richardson pointed that while he DOESN'T believe in UFO's, he nevertheless pointed out that the US government has not disclosed the available documentation to make a final determination one way or the other. So Richardson confirmed that a government cover up of UFO documents is underway, and that he had personal experience of this while serving in government.

Whether the UFO government cover up becomes an election issue or not will be a very interesting development to observe. Still, the fact that Richardson is now on the record is significant for those that have been arguing such a cover up for decades.

What will be even more interesting is how Hillary Clinton will eventually respond to the UFO question given Bill's earlier interest in it, and unconfirmed reports that she participated in a UFO briefing by Laurence Rockefeller in 1995. Wayne Madsen mentioned the Clinton's interest in his OpEd article concerning different presidents and their responses to the UFO issue.

Anything the MSM Can Do to Marginalize/Ridicule Kucinich

I think more people in this country are willing to entertain the idea that UFO's have been around a good long time than the smirking Russert realizes. That said, Russert's question to DK was outrageous in that it did not the serve the people's right to know his stand on the important issues of our time. Surely this clown Russert knows in his heart of hearts that he is shilling for the power brokers of the staus quo. I am glad I don't have a TV and have to actually witness the disrespect, not just for Mr Kucinich who stands head and shoulders above the rest, but for the American people and what we really care about. SHAME ON YOU TIM RUSSERT!

Shame on the System

The fact that this is or isn’t an issue of Presidential concern comes down to the paranoia built into the system.

·          Fear of the unknown

·          Fear of that (those) are different  to usBoth are the bread and butter of both sides of politics.

People by and large are too self obsessed through conditioning to be spoon fed on instant answers or decisions. If this wasn't true many politicians would never get elected and the supercilious shock jocks wouldn't have an audience. But neither would we ever have any idea about who we elect.

Even those who do vote are influenced by this phenomenon. Many elections have been turned around by dirty tricks the night before an election. Known as the last laugh principle.

Elections are won and lost on ‘I can identify with him/her” (he's more like me) not intellectual competence ergo 2000 election more people could identify with him then the ‘cardboard’ intellectual Gore.

Knowing this Kucinich, Richardson et al should have keep their own council unless they believe the highly questionable 70% of the public believe in ALIENS as opposed to UNIDENTIFIED flying Objects the two are decidedly different.

Obama's statement that not all the available information has been released is the most savvy and most appropriate it neither condemns or confirms leaves space for new information.

The system sucks ....how do we change it? Do you really believe that any of the current crop  of politicians are going to close down their options?

If you think that's crazy, watch FOX

It's no surprise that the "literate" laugh at UFO's sightings,FEAR, it's unknown, It is a huge universe. If you thinks those who have seen them are nuts, well, just read the papers, and if you think that's NOT nuts??? I wonder exactly how we are going to turn this mess around. Do we really think the rich can just keep the "getting" poorer at bay indefinately? This person thinks we now need help way beyond ANOTHER POLITICIAN. We need help in every area of life, especially the kindness area as this is the only area that is effective. Yup, I saw 6, just like a half a domino when I was 12 they peeled off in single file and winked out one by one. I have always thought that some day they would come and help up. Only then I didn't have any idea JUST how much help we would need. It's gonna take a big *WAKEUP* and then lots of help. Maybe ????   As I said, "If you think that's crazy watch fox news. Come on down !! I'll put the kettle on.
