WE HAVE LOST IN IRAQ

These words spoken by Senator Harry Reid have raised the Republican hackles and created headlines. While, actually, these words were predicated by a phrase which was widely overlooked, "Unless the President changes his plan." However, even if we "win" the war in Iraq, what will we have won? How does that compare with what we have lost?

First and foremost, we have lost the lives of well over 3,000 of our most precious treasure, the young men and women who might have been our future leaders and certainly would have been mother and fathers, factory workers, professional people, and generally productive and responsible citizens. Add to that the many thousands of lives that have been blighted by permanent disabilities, both mental and physical, due to the wounds and horrors which they have needlessly suffered. And the question will endure as to how much more they will suffer at the tender mercies of the VA health care system.

We have, as a nation, lost our moral compass. With the torture and indefinite detention policies which were established by this administration, we have lost our reputation as a compassionate nation, Not since the Civil War have we offered such miserable treatment to prisoners of war. We have unilaterallty repealed the Geneva Convention which once guaranteed the humane treatment of prisoners in time of war and substituted policies of brutality.

We have lost the war in Aghanistan, out only possible legitiomate target as we have pulled out the bulk of out troops for the ill-advised attack on Iraq and we have spread the interest in Al Qaida all over the Middle East while the warlords have assumed their accustomed control and the Taliban thrives due to our neglect, Furthermore, Afghanistan poppies fill the coffers of AlQaida throughout the world.

We have lost almost all of the nations which once were our allies as they become disgusted with our rampant militaristic imperialism. Where once we were a vital and effective participant in the world's search for peace, we are now feared and loathed throughout the world. The word, "respect", is no longer used in reference to the United States and our influence for peace and prosperity has simply disappeared.

We have lost our sense of purpose as we became obsessed with "winning" without knowing what winning is supposed to look like. Few of us could answer the question as to why we invaded Iraq in the first place as more of the reasons which we were given at the beginning are disproved and revealed as merely manipulation in order to accomplish whatever undisclosed goal the administration hoped to achieve. Meanhwile, we have abandoned, one by one, the principles upon which our very society was built. As the national budget is plunged into unimaginable debt as the war expenses eat up our resources, it is necessary to cut social programs and virtually dismantle our society as we know it.

We have lost our sense of "nation" as our borders are left unprotected and millions of immigrants pour in to tax our schools, welfare system, and hospitals while flooding our plants, factories, and construction crews with workers who are willing to accept smaller eages, often "under the table" with no tax or unemployment liability for the companies that employ them. As a result, our standard of living is falling as citizens lose their jobs, their homes, and their hope.

So, if and when we actually should "win" this war or the planned invasion of Iran, what will we have left? I forsee about three generations of Dickensian drudgery for the common man with exhorbitant taxes as we strugle to repay all the indebtedness assumed by this administration. And we will have to do it without our once-teeming factories, our productive farmland, and our state-of-the-art research and development firms. The entire structure of our once-great nation will take many years to rebuild and the restoration of our reputation as a land of hope, opportunity, and compassion will take even longer. We may look forward to the year 2009 with hope but it will take many years and many good governments to heal the wounds of this war, win or lose.

It took two centuries to build this nation and, after eight years of ill-chosen leadership, it will take another century to restore it. Perhaps than we can say that we have "won".

You are so right!

Perhaos it has to with our reason for fighting.  First we fought a "war to end all wars" and then we fought a "war to establish peace" and a "war to maintain the peace".  Now we appear to be engaged in a war for war's sake, and those wars can never be truly won.

Some wins

Great essay Mary. But there are 'wins':

- Bush2 place in history is secured no matter what's the outcome. He maybe hoping for FDR but may have to settle for LBJ.

- Big corporations are profiting immensely from all those billions spent.

- Islamic radicals and Iran have already won, while the rest of Middle East is getting a good laugh of out Bush2.

But the biggest win, long term, could be the people of USA. Never again the people be so easily fooled and elect a bunch of evangelical neocon with a Roman Empire ideology but the skills of cowboys to high office and let them run amuck.

The memory of Vietnam didn't save us from Iraq war crimes

Tom don't count on this from saving us from the next unjust war. I always thought Vietnam would keep us out of wars like Iraq but it didn't happen. LBJ used the fake Bay of Tonkin attack to triple the number of troops in Nam and Bush used the 9/11 attack to support GOP war crimes in Iraq and abuse our civil liberties.

Vietnam didn't save us from Republican war in Iraq

I attended the March 17th march on the Pentegon to protest the war.  There was a small but vocal group of Vietnam vets that were counter protesting our protest against the war.  How anyone could serve in Nam and support the war crimes in Iraq have to be either idiots or mentally ill from the stress of combat. I am not very confident in our younger generations remembering and stopping the next illegal war.

lesson learned?

lessons learned? I 'm not so sure. Our over-all society is not going to learn the lessons they need unless some serious heads roll. That is to say that there must be serious punishment, condemnation, and sincere regret expressed of and for the many abominations and international and national crimes of the past 7 years or so - and without that - the ruthless crooks and the racist "haters" will go on with business as usual. Watch as a new crop of criminals and butchers replace the current criminals and butchers (learning only how to better get away with their crimes as cheney and co. did from Nixon's mistakes). If we are to come out of this nightmare, like we did with Vietnam - let's not just stop the killing - let's take it further this time - let's have some real and concrete changes to protect our country - to protect the constitution - and to protect the world. Laws and regulations that once protected us, such as the right to privacy, the fairness doctrine (and others) - they must be restored AND restored with prejudice - giving them huge "teeth" and making them much harder to remove or water-down in the future. The constitution also needs to be amended to protect us from new and unforeseen threats due to today's digital age, etc.. Please... if we do succeed in restoring decency, humanity, and conscience to our country - let's make sure it's more permanent this time.

Anyhoo, you are probably right when you said, "It took two centuries to build this nation and, after eight years of ill-chosen leadership, it will take another century to restore it. Perhaps than we can say that we have "won"." However, what you say concerns me - for I fear that if we move that slow - people will have long forgotten the nightmare that is todays society and the sense of urgency will be lost. We need to to *kick some thug ass and we need to do it now. We really do.

And sorry for the rant...

*legally speaking of course.

Impeach and then arrest them for war crimes- send to Hauge

*legally speaking of course.

That means we can torture them then. Lots of stuff that is legal now is wide open. Just like the wild west of George Bush's mind.

I would love to see both George and Dick impeached and then arrested and sent to the Hague to be tried as war criminals that they are.

I can't bring myself to be that pessinistic

Perhaps because. long before the Pilgrims "discovered" Playmouth Rock", my ancestors were sailing up the St. Lawrence and trading with the Indians.  Through family history, I have become painfully aware of the way they had to live and the obstacles they had to overcome in order to establish, much less maintain this wonderful nation.  Therefor, I am convinced that what we have done before we can do again.  That is, unless we have truly become so soft and selfish that we do not deserve to continue.
