The Mad, Mad, Mad World of Mitt Romney

Mitt Romney, in the Republican presidential candidates debate last night, said that the reason we went to war in Iraq was that Saddam Hussein would not let weapons inspectors in.
That’s right up there with Gerald Ford’s gaffe, saying that “There is no Soviet domination of Eastern Europe.”

Romney’s statement is manifestly not true. It is obviously not true. Did Hans Blix not exist?

It is true that the Iraqi regime was, by nature and practice, opaque. But it is also true that the inspectors got in, got access everywhere they asked to go, and that they found virtually nothing. It is also true that they wanted to continue their inspections until they could shine a light on any remaining gray areas and say with more absolute assurance, as was discovered after the invasion, that there were no weapons of mass destruction or any active programs to make any. It is also true that when the inspectors couldn’t find weapons, that Colin Powell changed the rules and said it was not enough, that Saddam had to prove that they had all been destroyed. Then George Bush changed them again and said the only way to avoid war was for Saddam to abdicate, and gave him 48 hours to get out of town.

It is not only true that the inspectors got in, it is also a matter of record that it was the United States that demanded that the inspectors leave.

It was no slip of the tongue. Romney was adamant about it. He said let us not forget that if Saddam had just let them and IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) in, we would not be in this war.
More astonishing is that no one noticed and no one cared. He is one of the leaders of the pack and might actually become president.
Not one of the other candidates jumped on it. Although it was a great opportunity to show that Romney had no idea what he was talking about on the most significant issue of the day, that he had to be ignorant, or lying opportunistically, or living in a fantasy world.

Wolf Blitzer, moderating the debate didn’t correct him. The so-called journalists asking questions didn’t seem to notice. The CNN post debate commentators didn’t mention it. The New York Times and The Washington Post, in today’s stories on the debate, didn’t mention it. A web search this morning didn’t reveal any comments on Romney’s astounding statement.

It’s bad enough that Republican presidential candidates say things that are clearly and obviously, as a matter of checkable fact, not true.
What’s worse is that the media is demonstrating that they are still in the bizarre fog that they have been in for at least the last six years, as things take place before their eyes and they manage, somehow, not to see them.
Will facts ever matter? Or will American politics remain a contest of bedtime stories for children?

Mitt Romney

Nice job with miss quoting and taking totally out of context what Mitt Romney said. Are you too scared to actually post the truth. Talk about spinning! Would you like me to post what he really said. How about put this in your article if you are going to be fair.

"Well, the question is kind of a non sequitur, if you will, and what I mean by that — or a null set. And that is that if you’re saying let’s turn back the clock, and Saddam Hussein had opened up his country to IAEA inspectors, and they’d come in and they’d found that there were no weapons of mass destruction, had Saddam Hussein, therefore, not violated United Nations resolutions, we wouldn’t be in the conflict we’re in. But he didn’t do those things, and we knew what we knew at the point we made the decision to get in. I supported the president’s decision based on what we knew at that time. I think we were underprepared and underplanned for what came after we knocked down Saddam Hussein."

He made clear that the ball was in Saddam's court. If he would have fully cooperated we wouldn't be in this mess.
There you go. And you wonder why liberal media gets such a bad name.

Mitt Romney

First of all there is no such thing as a Liberal Media most are largely run by corportists who support Republicans and their ilk. Second, after 9/11 the govt came out and said this is the work of Osama Bib Laden. why did we ask to see what Saddam had if he was not accused of anything in the first place? Why did we not go after those who were repsonsible? Since when do we go searching for others in someone elses backyard? And by the way those so call hijackers came from Saudi Arabia and Yemen. How come there were no weapons inspector in those countries? Fce it this President and his men use the death of 3000 americans to go after Saddam. If I knew that someone murdered someone and knew where they live and decided to search your house instead then what would be the point of going after that person if I was going to make someone else the scapegoat. it should leave you to believe something is wrong. These Republicans have done more killings than anyone has an recent history. I for one dont know how they look at themselves in the mirror.  How do you tell people in Iraq that they lost their love ones because of someone else's lies? Now they are all trying to cover it up and make excuses for what they did. They all back Bush in the beginning but now that the war/occupation is going bad now they are ducking for cover. Where were they when he lied and their was no proof??? You know what goes around comes around. One day some country is going to lie about what we did and attack us based on that lie and you and anyone else will lose their own family members. How would you feel then??? Amercians have got to learn to stop lying and turning things around when it doesnt suite your agenda.

TERRIBLE FACTS / WHO WROTE THIS??

I guess your are wondering why only a few in the media have commented on Mitt's ignorant statement?  Well, let me tell you.... HE WAS 100% correct to those who know the history.... TYPE UN RESOLUTION 1441 into google and I am sure you will see that the weapons inspectors were kicked out in 1998 and when war was imminent and we demanded inspections, the U.N. -your buddy Hans Blix WERE NOT GIVEN FULL ACCESS to many restricted areas.  The whole situation was deteriorating the closer we got to war.  The Iraqi's failed misserably in provide accurate weapons reports, and the overall WORLD -U.N consensus was that they were hiding their most secretive weapons program.  I know that if a cop pulls me over and asks to see my ID and I hide it(even if I am innocent), I am going to face consequences...  So, read resolution 1441 and then correct this article.
