Holy Name 6 Face Death Threats, Need Letters of Support

Remember when this happened a week ago?

Peace Activists Stage "Die-In", Interrupt Easter Mass

In the broad context of the antiwar movement, this was an action that greatly energized the movement to end the war in Iraq. People came together quickly to show solidarity and contribute money to bail the Holy Name 6 out of jail.

What was so great about the action was that it brought the war home to Americans.

While some were upset that the six disrupted worship, think about this: Most Iraqis have not been able to pray in peace since the U.S. invaded.

Currently, the Holy Name 6 are facing death threats and are hiding out in a collective.

The Holy Name 6 have been vilified by the media. Lies spread throughout the Chicago community have led to them being ostracized greatly. They need your letters of support so that they can stand up fearlessly and use this action to build support for more resistance and opposition to the Iraq war.

Please send letters to my OpEdNews account or post them in the comments section. The letters will be sent to the emails of the Holy Name 6 so they can use the letters to motivate themselves to stay strong.

The Holy Name 6 are suffering for our sins. We must come together and support them for having the courage to resist when the majority of Americans refuse to take the kind of bold action that they did.

He is currently working as a production assistant on a documentary called "Seriously Green" which traces the development of the Green Party throughout the 2008 election. He has a passion for journalism and writes articles or press releases in his spare time. Kevin Gosztola is also a student activist who believes in questioning the way America's systems work(its electoral system, its military-industrial complex, its foreign policy of American exceptionalism, its media which has become the Fourth Branch of government, etc.)
His ambitions have him currently organizing and raising money for a Chicago Conference for Media Reform in April or May of 2009. It will be organized by college students to promote youth involvement in media reform and justice. Those interested in attending or helping with the organization of the program should contact him.

Success comes in interesting forms

For these intrepid activists, villification and lies are part of the road they have chosen to travel. Their righteous action will draw the attention of the same kinds of liars and criminal perpetrators as the calls to war that were express by the same kinds of liars and criminals.

What is being said about them, anyway? I think they're heroes and have just begun a journey that is off to a glorious start. But remember that the heroic journey is not an easy one. It is full of conflict, challenges and what seems like near death.

Well here's just a few comments to illuminate

Some of the vilification and ostracism they are facing.

Pat Hickey, off of the comments section of this Chicago Tribune article

This is a very Stupid position. You are begging moral equivalence for am act of terror?

The recent act of domestic terror on worshippers at Easter Mass deserves the full attention of the lawyers for the Archdiocese of Chicago, the Cook County States Attorney, Illinois Attorney General, Illinois Secretary of State, U.S. Secret Service, Office of Homeland Security and the Chicago Police Department.

The entire network of radical leftist activists warrant the full and complete attention of all the Justice System.

Hamerhard Media Works, Inc.

The Seeker needs to find the gray matter between her ears - for staters.

I'll tone it down a bit. An Angry Veteran from the same comments section:

I absolutely 100% agree with the message of Catholic Schoolgirls Against the War as I am a member of Veterans for Peace. What I DO NOT agree with, however, is using the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass as a vehicle for that protest. Instead of jail, these men and women should pay a fine, pay the dry-cleaning bills and help clean, renovate and restore Holy Name Cathedral and personally apologize to Cardinal George.

Now, that represents 75% of the people who saw this action. They want an apology and want them to admit how they protested was wrong.

I heavily disagree as protests against the war stopped needing to be polite after Bush declared Mission Accomplished and then decided to continue the war with the help and aid of a complicit Republican and later, Democratic Congress.

I'll post a couple more comments later on in the day.

Now, naturally, I believe when you take this action you have to expect that people will oppose you and threaten you. But, that doesn't excuse it.

I Agree

I agree with you Kevin. The time for "niceness" is over. What is the sacrifice

of the Mass anyway? It's just another man made thing that has nothing to

do with what Jesus taught. I'll repeat what Jesus said again: "They strain out the gnat, but swallow the camel. "The gnat in this case is the blood stained rug and the interrupting of the Mass. The camel is the untold bloodshed in Iraq for no purpose whatsoever. Get it?

We live in a sad twisted world. I fully support these real Christians who

interrupted the Mass. They care about human injustice and human suffering,

not the false image of ritualistic, mind numbing worship. I'll quote Jesus

again: "They honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me."

I'm not saying church going people are bad ( I myself attend church on

occasion), but Christianity is more than once a week worship. It's a way of

life. A real Christian should seek to fight injustice, like when Jesus overturned the money tables in the temple. Should Jesus have apologized

also? Think about it.

Some thoughts from the loyal opposition

As you might expect, I am in complete disagreement with your pleas for support for these protesters, with but one exception. If they indeed have received threats of physical violence, everything possible should be done to protect them from such acts.

Beyond that, I consider their actions to be inexcusable. Not only did they inflict psychological discomfort on innocent victims (those attending the Mass), but they vandalized private property, and interfered with the rights of “… the people to peaceably assemble.”

While I have no confirming evidence, I find it likely, that if anything, at least some who witnessed this behavior are now more negatively disposed towards the protestor's advocated position, then was previously the case.

Since you, and others who endorse and support their efforts have raised bail for these women, it seems likely that additional efforts will be directed to raising funds to secure counsel, pay their fines, and make restitution for the damage they caused. Thus, they will suffer little, if any consequence for their unlawful behavior.

In other comments, I have made clear that I consider much of protest activity to be the juvenile acts of the emotionally immature. I want to be clear that I fully support your absolute right to make your political views known, whatever they may be. Where you and I part company occurs when you impose your views on me or on others. Certainly you should be free to write, to hold public meetings, produce films and videos, etc. Those rights, in my view, end, when you force me to be an unwilling audience to those views.

Chief of the "Thought Police?"

I take it, then, that anyone who disagrees with your views is  to be classified as a “scoundrel?” I  apparently missed your appointment as Chief of the Thought Police. Apparently, as you prepared to assume this most important position, your education seems to have omitted the works of the 18th Century French philosopher and writer, Voltaire. You seemingly missed, or more likely simply disregarded the statement, often attributed to him, which explains and provides the foundation for the very dissent upon which you are so intent on promoting: “I disagree with what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it.”

School girl Six (some of which were real men.)

A note to Sherman: I appreciate your position, however if peacable assembly goes unnoticed, putting yourself in a position to be arrested to make a point is a brave act. Yes, some who may have liked their position but not their act may turn against them. Was it the best choice for their action? It got attention and made people think. That in itself made it is the kind of position that most people are afraid to do. I support them and their action. It was not immature. It was gutsty!

heros or kids?

I like how people are calling these kids heros when they did not even know they were going to get in trouble. I am an employee at Holy Name Cathedral and when they were being detained by the Chicago Police they kept asking him are we really getting arrested. They had this undoubtable belief that they would not get in trouble. I say congratulations to them, there goes 5 years of your life
