A Message To Families That Believe We Dishonored The Dead At Anti-War Protest

It saddened me when I read that many of the Families of slain soldiers In Iraq and Afghanistan believe it dishonors the dead to symbolize the unnecessary American deaths that occur almost daily in the Middle-East. As of September 13, 2007, there have been:

4,075 coalition deaths — 3,776 Americans, two Australians, 169 Britons, 13 Bulgarians, one Czech, seven Danes, two Dutch, two Estonians, one Fijian, one Hungarian, 33 Italians, one Kazakh, one Korean, three Latvian, 21 Poles, two Romanians, five Salvadoran, four Slovaks, 11 Spaniards, two Thai and 18 Ukrainians — in the war in Iraq as of September 13, 2007, according to a CNN count. (Graphical breakdown of casualties). The list below is the names of the soldiers, Marines, airmen, sailors and Coast Guardsmen whose deaths have been reported by their country’s governments. The list also includes seven employees of the U.S. Defense Department. At least 27,848 U.S. troops have been wounded in action, according to the Pentagon. LINK

I wasn’t able to attend the protest myself due to family health issues, however, my heart was with those who were able to travel to the Capitol and voice their dissatisfaction with a war that never should have been started - and If I was able, I would have been there too. I cannot speak for all, or any of the other Liberals, Progressives, Iraq War Veterans and even a few Republicans who have become disillusioned with this war and spoke-out this Saturday - but I feel it necessary to respond in defense to those that did have the courage to march on the capitol and love our country enough to risk the wrath of the government. People who protest against the Bush administration often wind-up on terrorist watch-lists and are categorized as “risks to national security” merely because they are attempting to educate and alert the rest of America to the tragedy and real facts the MSM refuses to report upon in regard the Afghanistan and Iraqi War(s).

Anti-War Protest in Washington, D.C.

160 arrested as thousands march against Iraq war in Washington

* Thousands of protesters marched from White House to Capitol
* Dozens arrested after jumping barricade at foot of Capitol steps
* Counterprotesters lined sidewalks, leading to heated shouting matches
* Nearly 1,000 counterprotesters gathered near Washington Monument

WASHINGTON (AP) — Several thousand protesters marched Saturday from the White House to the Capitol to demand an end to the Iraq war, and at least 160 people were arrested when they jumped a barricade at the foot of the Capitol steps.

Many of the protesters were arrested without a struggle after they jumped over the waist-high barricade. But some grew angry as police attempted to push them back using large shields. At least two people were showered with chemical spray. Protesters responded by throwing signs and chanting: “Shame on you.”

The arrests came after protesters initially decided to lie down on the Capitol lawn with signs on top of their bodies to represent soldiers killed in Iraq. When police took no action, some of the protesters climbed the barricade. MORE

When you glance at the headline, it appears that a few thousand people attended the protest, however as your read on, that number is estimated at close to 100,000, if not more. As you can see from the photo, there were many, many thousands who had the courage to march on the Capitol - although for all practical purposes, the MSM seems to be reporting as little as possible on this story. As the protests grow larger, and more Americans awaken to the fact that their President has mislead them, the real fury of the people will begin to manifest itself, and the cries for impeachment will grow louder by the day - and they won’t quit now; this was only the beginning!

Merrillee Carlson, national chair of Families United for our Troops and Their Mission, told Fox, “When somebody goes and abuses our son’s courage and heroism by using it in this manner, it just strikes right to the heart and causes such pain that is unbelievable.”

“I think the name ‘die-in’ is offensive,” suggested one of the Fox hosts, “but I want to ask you this. Most Americans, if you ask them, cannot name one soldier or marine who’s been killed in combat. … This arguably, at least, heightens the awareness that there are people, in fact, dying in this war. … Do you see any merit in that?”

“They’re not doing it in a way to honor them,” insisted Carlson. “They’re doing it in a way to abuse them. to dishonor them, because they’re using it anti-war. … The protesters are going against everything that these young men and women believed in and that’s what’s disgraceful about it.” MORE

I believe there was no intent to dishonor their sacrifice; The protester’s took great pains to make it clear they supported the troops, and speaking for myself - the soldiers who have lost their lives in the Iraq War are heroes, every one of them, and answered the call from our President (sic) to invade a country that posed no verifiable security risk to the United States; they reacted patriotically and joined the military to help fight who they believed were presenting a danger to the United States, and also believed that Iraq was at least partially responsible for September the 11th, 2001; We take issue that they were lied to and essentially tricked into invading a county that had nothing to do with 911 - nor did they possess WMD’s. Recent polls indicate that approximately 30% of American adults still believe that Iraq had something to do with 911, yet sixth grader’s in Georgia are being taught in school that Iraq had nothing to do with the carnage that pierced all of our hearts that fateful day, and I believe it’s time that those 30% who still actively support this war be made aware of the real facts so we can unite as a country and place the anger and blame where it belongs - squarely on the shoulders of President Bush and Darth Cheney!

I believe that we all share in your grief, but we also recognize that almost every day more families join the ranks of the grieving, and I think most believe it’s their patriotic duty to stand-up for what they believe in, and attempt to avoid thousands of other families from losing their loved one’s too - and allow a war-for-profit to continue at the expense of America’s sons and daughters. There were no WMD’s in Iraq, and while your sons and daughters were sent on a mission to prevent Iraq from harming the United States, we now know - without a doubt - the American people, Congress, and world leaders alike that the Bush administration lied and misrepresented the truth about Iraq, and your loved one’s were sent on a mission that was based on lies and fraud!

To most Americans except those who have suffered personal loss themselves, the war in Iraq is what we see on the news; yet when the fallen are returned home after making the ultimate sacrifice, the flag-draped caskets are brought in without any MSM news coverage, many times under cover of darkness, all because the Bush administration is attempting to minimize the shock to the American conscience as we see America’s fallen coming home - and are thus made aware that yes, real people are dying in Iraq, and it’s our duty to demand that we begin bringing our troops home so there will be less grief in America, and once again, we can begin the real fight against Al Qaeda and international terrorism.

I am nothing more than a patriotic American that is doing whatever I can to further the cause of democracy, the rule of law, and am absolutely outraged on how the Bush administration is defying our Congress, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights! Footnote: I write in a style that I believe is appropriate in today's world where we can't trust the Mainstream News Media, and rather than concentrating on one article alone, which may or may not receive the exposure and emphasis it should, I prefer to meld several relevant stories together, that each taken alone may not expose the entire situation, but when taken-in as a whole, tend to give the reader a better understanding of the subject. One article or story alone does not represent the "Big Picture" - but when several are effectively tied-together it often reveals a trend or broader view of the subject matter that is important to completely understand any given situation. http://justanothercoverup.com/

I am a retired opera singer. I was a leading soprano with the New York City Opera for ten years. I am a strong supporter of Dennis Kucinich and worked for his campaign in 2004. I believe that he is the ONLY honest man in congress. He has been working against this insane war since before it began. I am 72 years old and I have been so frustrated with the media, the Congress and the American people that they don't tell the truth.

It's tough to think that one's loved one died in vain.

I wonder if it would help these people to talk with Cindy Sheehan. Maybe if they could see the truth of the situation it would make them angry enough to change how they feel.

It's hard enough to lose a loved one but to know that they died for the greed of this evil administration might make a difference. I know if that happened to my offspring I would be mad as hell and I would want to change the situation altogether. The spin that has been put on the Iraq occupation is so hypnotizing to these people that they can't as yet see the truth.

War is always stupid but this one is really horrible. It comes from the deranged minds of Cheney and Bush. If for no other reason than that, they should both be impeached. That is most certainly reason for impeachment, perhaps the best one.

once again...

...we aren't debating the war, we are debating the tacticts of the opposition, just as we weren't debating the validity of Patraeus' manipulated data, we were arguing over the patriotism of the organization and people behind the ad. Why every parent of every soldier can't see how this president has dishonored and abused our military personell is most perplexing!

Response to Iraqi 'Conflict', Anti-War Protest

I believe this to be the most truthful, honest, and reasonable,  article I have read in quite some time, regarding the feelings of American's. It has touched on the very fiber of this undeclared 'war'.

I do not believe there was any intent to degrade our lost soldiers or their families by this protest in any way. My grandaughter is in service, my neighbor who was in the National Guard was called up, served, came home, now is a divorcee. I know of others who are there as I write. This 'conflict'  should never have been, NEVER !!

Have we  seen or heard of anyone from "Nicolae" Bush or "Darth" Cheney's families serving, let alone losing their lives? No, we have not , and we won't.

Until the Iraqi's are left to settle their Civil War themselves, and no longer have any other countries soldiers dieing FOR them, why should they "take charge"? As long as American's are sent there to die, this will continue until that rehensible 'excuse' of a leader remains in office. I think he should be exiled (along with Cheney), to none other than Iran, and let him take HIS chances. This country is in a most pathetic mess, and it is all on Bush and his cohort Cheney. Either one of them are equally quilty, and when they open their mouths, you know you are going to hear another lie.

War is The Enemy!

"There is a basic weakness in governments, because their power depends on the obedience of citizens, of soldiers, of civil servants, of journalists and writers and teachers and artists. When the citizens begin to suspect they have been deceived and withdraw their support, government loses its legitimacy and its power." (Howard Zinn in his book A POWER GOVERNMENTS CANNOT SUPPRESS)

How well writers and historians have shown us the TRUTH. It is amazing how we continue not to learn from history!
This article is good! It lets people know that protesting is a right and freedom and creates a power no government can suppress.

"We live in a beautiful country. But people who have no respect for human life, freedom, or justice have taken it over. It is now time for all of us to take it back!" (Howard Zinn)

I will protest war until the day I die! I only hope that someday our brave soldiers will refuse to fight in wars created by their governments and learn the TRUTH---WAR IS THE ENEMY.

Let us stop being a military superpower and start becoming a humanitarian superpower. Change will come only when the American people demand it, like these demonstrators were doing in Washington D.C. God bless them!

Ultimate

What better way is their to support the troops than to support the movements dedicated to bringing them home?

The Bush Corp. is the entity that has put them in harms way for false, ever-evolving rationales, and the powers that be add insult to that injury with extended tours that have in part contributed to suicide, loss of stateside property, failed marriages, and more. It's the administration that has not supported the troops. On the contrary, it's broken the military.

My heart aches for the loved ones of members of the military that have sacrificed their lives for this misguided and maybe even criminal occupation, and it's so hard to talk to people who disagree with that assessment of the mess in Iraq because the first point they often make is something like, so, the soldiers who were killed just died in vain.

It's hard sometimes for people to understand that one can respect and admire the troops while hating their mission and their commander-in-chief's judgment and cavalier attitude; that mindest indicative of many of this country's pro-war leaders that can eagerly send other people's loved ones to die when they themselves "had other priorities" when they were called to service.

War is Personal

This from the headlines at Democracy Now on Monday:

Pro-War Protesters Assault Father Of Soldier Killed in Iraq
A counter-demonstration was also held by supporters of the war. One prominent peace activist Carlos Arredondo was beaten by pro-war activists. Arredondo's son Alex died in Iraq three years ago. To honor Alex's memory, Carlos has been crisscrossing the country pulling a flag-draped coffin. He marched with the coffin on Saturday and then left the march to return the coffin to his truck. That's when a pro-war supporter tried to rip a photo of Carlos' son from the coffin. When Carlos tried to save the photograph, he said a group of pro-war activists attacked him.

  • Carlos Arredondo: "I was assaulted by a group of pro-war people. They come into the ground, and they kicked me and punched me. As a citizen of this country, it’s my duty and my responsibility to participate. As a father, who I lost my son in Iraq, I got to honor my son."

The Nation did a powerful photojournalism piece on Mr. Arredondo here.

This image is heartwrenching.

The best way to honor our war dead is to end war.  Reminding a calloused administration that there is a human cost to the killing by staging a die-in strikes me as a more than honorable way to bring about the peace so desperately needed.  I would yield to the opinion of the Gold Star Families for Peace should they oppose such an action as tasteless, but I don't believe that is the case.

Harpist, unemployed blue collar worker, and Bush basher living deep in the heart of Texas.
PappyHarpist, unemployed blue collar worker, and Bush basher living deep in the heart of Texas.

Empty arguments from empty minds.

To call for an end to the war is a bad thing? It dishonors the dead? How so? Frankly, it's about time that someone SOMEWHERE started making a public show about the garbage that has been allowed to fester under DUBYA and his evil twin of a different mother, Dick(LESS) Cheney.

For myself, I am beyond happy that there are people finally stepping up, standing up, and saying, "no more war!" I have been waiting for Americans to start flashing their testicles, especially now that it appears congress still can't gather up two whole testicles from their midst. The American People standing up is something for which I have been waiting since there was even an inkling that this war was nothing but pure grade, one hundred percent bullshit! And now it's happening...

...and now, the war pigs are getting exposed in the naked light of day, and that has the lot pissed off!

Is anyone here really surprised that this is happening? The war pigs made this mess. They like the profits they have made on the backs of those fighting this war, and those funding it: We The People! They don't want their fetid trough of blood money to run dry. They don't want us to see them for what they really are: cowards who couldn't be bothered to be patriotic when it was their time to serve in Vietnam. No, not a one of the assholes who put this fiasco together and dubbed it the Iraq War (save Colin Powell), could be bothered to step up for the country they supposedly love...love enough to tear it asunder with impunity.

And as for their shills and mouthpieces in the Lame-stream media, why do they continue to hold the floor? The lies they have forwarded to We The People should be more than enough proof that journalism in this country is all but dead except for places like OpEdNews. Is it not past time for the lot of those hyenas to finally taste the bitter poison that they have spewed from sea to shining sea?

My hat is off to the protesters. It is my fervent hope and wish that their numbers increase to Vietnam era levels, and Vietnam era strength, and Vietnam era power; even unto a Kent State Massacre for the present era. Talk about something that WILL get the attention of the sleeping (m)asses!

At this point in history, ANYONE who believes ANYTHING said by the government via the handmaidens of lies known as the Lame-stream media only shows themselves to be a cretin; a simple minded waste of oxygen that should do the only proper thing: die at their own stupid hands. It is they that are the problem, not those who hunger and thirst for what freedoms we held before the court jester became the vice president, and the village idiot became chimp in chief!

I understand the blinded not wanting to admit they were wrong, but there comes a time when it has to happen if people are to ever get over themselves and move into the next phase of their realities. That the remaining thirty percent who buy into the DUBYA cult of personality are going to fight tooth and nail to maintain the idea that they are right should be expected. However, there are seventy percent of us who feel that this war was a sham, a shame, and nothing more than a means for fat cats to become fatter feeding off the efforts of the middle class American; a species almost extinguished by the effort.

It is my hope that eventually, the blinded will realize that they have been used as pawns and rendered as fools. If not, too bad for them. As long as the protests continue and grow, the number of people who are willingly blind to the lies of the DUBYA regime and the cowards in congress is going to fall. Since it's obvious that her majesty Nancy Pelosi can't be bothered to do anything to bring the DUBYA circus to justice, someone has to stand up for America. Thank the goddess that at long last, someone is standing up for America.

That only leaves one final question: WHAT TOOK Y'ALL SO FUCKING LONG?

Blessed be!
Pappy
