Why NC 08 is not the same as FL 13 even though the iVotronic was used in both races
I am writing about the rumors still swirling around the internet saying that the wrong winners were picked in both the FL 13's congressional race and the NC 08 congressional race. The rumor claims that both use the same voting machine, and that both had the same rate of high undervotes.
Collins article uses incorrect data for NC 08. The article states: "In both districts, the iVotronic touch screen voting machines produced undervote rates at or above 15%."
In fact, the precinct-level figures support an undervote rate of about 4% in NC-08.
The main problem with the analysis was the inclusion of all absentee, curbside, and provisional ballots in the turnout figures for all three House districts in Mecklenburg. Even though most of the district was in NC-12, all the NC-12 (and NC-09) absentee, etc. ballots were included in the NC-08 turnout.
Here are articles that disagree with Collins' data

Now, conspiracy theories are cropping up surrounding the 4.2% Mecklenburg County undervote in the 8th Congressional race between Larry Kissell and Robin Hayes. It started with an email going around with lots of THESE and quite a few of !!!!!!! these. According to the author of the email the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections was negligent in its execution of the 3% eye-hand recount performed on November 29, 2006. The author also claims that there is an unprecedented undervote in Mecklenburg County for the 8th Congressional District race. The undervote rate of 4.2% is unprecedented in this race for Mecklenburg County, however, in light of circumstances surrounding November's elections, it is not surprising, shocking or significant and all the CAPITAL LETTERS and !!!!! exclamation points!!!! in the world will not change that fact...
Please read the comments at the Blue NC Blog, they are by other folks from North Carolina, including people who worked on campaigns or otherwise are connected in that area.
Founder of the NC Coalition for Verified Voting. We passed a law to require VVPB on August 2005 after years of work. NC Coalition for Verified Voting is an all volunteer organization that does not solicit or accept donations.
would it be to have verifiable, recountable, paper ballots? Why is it that a return to what served us well, serves other nations very well indeed, yet is deemed reactionary or worse here gains such little support?
I understand that Canada, using 'old fashioned' paper, has certified election results mere hours after the last vote is cast. Are we unable to do what Canada does? Is there an ulterior motive behind this resistance to returning to a system that actually is above reproach?

NC requires paper, had manual recount, Canada only 1 contest
NC requires VVPB.
Did you know that one reason Canada counts its ballots so quickly is because there is only one (1) contest on the whole ballot? See this link about HCPB in various countries

In NC, there was a manual recount in 5 counties before the democrat conceded. If you go to the links, you will see that he picked up 2 votes from this sample (3%) manual hand to eye count.
Further, if you go to the links, you will read discussion by people who live in Mecklenburg County NC as to why they think there was a 4% undervote for US congress in that district, and whether that was normal.

The major problem here is ignorance of what's at stake, and when people watch Herrin's powerpoint presentation, it all becomes clear. I once drove for a trucking company that was forced to have an election by the Teamsters, so the company hired a professional union buster. Even with two observers, one from the company and one representing the drivers (me)and a member of the N.L.R.B looking for fraud, the election was stolen. Only afterwards did we find out that the ballots that were folded came from drivers who were threatened with termination if they didn't vote against the IBT, and that's how we found out, along with finding out that the union buster got paid $500,000. Every Board of Supervisors, every RoV, and every Secretary of State needs to see this presentation.

We got the state legislature to have Chuck Herrin present testimony - it scared the crap out of them, but in the end, it wasn't enough.
However, our senior senator who sponsored NC's VVPB law did say she thinks in about 10 years this country will be ready for hand counted paper ballots.
We tried to present more testimony on HCPB, but Chuck's was all we were allowed to get in.
