Who killed Benazir Bhutto? I don’t know, and neither do you. Musharraf had the motivation and the opportunity, but it could have been done by private groups, or with the planning and complicity of other governments, including our own. At a time like this, we are squarely confronted with two great losses: We have lost faith in our government’s adherence to minimal standards of decency and humanity. Torture, assassinations, and the use of our military might to terrorize foreign and domestic populations have become the stock in trade of this Administration. It is by no means beyond the pale that our government would take a hand in such an assassination, and we have, at this point, no evidence for or against this as a hypothesis.
