It's interesting how we try to make ourselves bigger than life
And how we need a caring God, who is bigger than us

How strange that we fear being swallowed up by the universe
And how we cringe at the thought of an uncaring void

It seems that we are really immature and frightened children
Making terrible messes that we never clean up

God appears to be the absent, passive, or silent parent
Leaving us free to raise hell and never really grow up

But, then again, maybe God is the perfect, caring parent
Who is able to love us unconditionally

Maybe God is giving us all the rope we need to sink or swim
And he/she/it is leaving it up to us, to grow up or perish

What if God is at the deepest center and core of who we are
And our job is to grow into being who we really are?

Perhaps, we will go from believing in an external, caring God
To being the caring one that lives inside of us!

Then we will finally free ourselves from being afraid of the void
And realize that the void is where we came from

Maybe then we will stop using the idea of God as a crutch
And begin to truly live in God's image
