The Clintons are all over Barack Obama because of his quip about small town people often displaying dismaying bitterness about their economic (and social) plight. Obama had the kernel of an idea that he should have taken back to his brain trust to smooth out the wrinkles and develop into a strong theme, for clearly he has struck a nerve and his opponents, the Clintons, are trying to push him around to the wrong side of it. Obama no more disparages the small town people than he disparages big town people or any people, he just noticed the symptoms displayed by people who are not riding confidently into the future or even hesitantly. They are "left behind" in a way that Republicans and desperate Clintons could never understand.

Obama should take this one by the horns and show Americans that their hopes and fears, their bitterness and their hunkering down are the result of careless and heedless Republican social-darwinist social policy ... that, indeed, these people have been left to fend for themselves.

OBAMA DID NOT APOLOGIZE

iF ONE GOES BACK AND REVISITS what Obama said, he said he wished he could have said it better, but he stands by the essence of what he said, that people are afraid for their jobs and incomes, and disenchanted, and take refuge in minutiae. IT IS THE MEDIA that say that he apopologized, that he was sorry, that he was flip flopping, that he will not be a resolute leader. That is what is behind all the hype aboyt Obama apologizing. Its not true. Obama is a rock.

No surprises

Hey, we're Americans, we know by now that liberal candidates never get a fair shake, and that Republicans get the media’s best Teflon coating.

Expect the Republicans to ramp up the slime rapidly as we head into the Summer. This time it may not work. If it does work on “bitter” Americans again (fool me a million times?), say hello to President McCain.

Guns & God

Funny, how Lou Dobbs' recent poll asking if Americans were "Bitter and Angry" , Partisan and Pathetic", or "Independant and Proud" yielded a majority of votes for "Bitter and angry", instead of the answer Lou was obviously angling for (Independant and proud) !

I too live in a small conservative town in rural Maine, and there's alot of that, for sure. People have just cause to be angry, even though it's often misdirected.

Guns and God.

Saddest is when they shoot themselves in the foot on election day over one issue, like guns, because they bought the Repug propaganda that liberals will deprive them of their guns, so they end up putting the very kind of politicians in office that we need guns to protect ourselves from!

But.. there's also the pleasant surprises, like the Town Conservatives supporting my initiative to pass a Resolution against the "Patriot"Act in '04 at Town Meetin' . Their reasoning to counter the prevailing rhetoric of "Only Terrorists and Criminals should worry'?

"If they've got it, they'll USE it!"

Now, THAT is good ole small town Horse Sense!

Too bad the framed copy of our Resolution, which should be proudly displayed on the Town Office walls, has been deep-sixed into a desk drawer for fear of putting a few town Nazis' noses out of joint!

(Is THAT a sign of the times, or WHAAAAT!?)

Bitterness

I believe you. The problem with voters is that two things have happened in their lifetimes that really affected them. Forced integration and the decline of American industry, both of which the Republicans blame on Democrats! So, when they say Dems will take away their guns, their final response to the "humiliations" they have already endured, they figure the Democrats will be arrogant enough to do it.

Civil rights and integration would have gone much more smoothly if LBJ had not embroiled us so deeply in the war, but Washington eventually took the blame for Vietnam and it tarred Civil Rights with the same brush.

The blaming of Democrats and unions for the decline of industry is laughable , ironic, ugly, and so utterly false that it really does require an explanation.  The short explanation is that the period when Democrats should have been defending trade unions as part of the escalator to the middle class, trade unions became more corrupt ... and industry began to buy out the souls of Democrats in Congress!  It is a sad story and, yes, people have a right to be bitter, but they need to get over themselves too. I think that's the Obama message, and I hope it is not too late!!!
