Sheehan Defection Has Me Wondering Less

For some time I've been asking the question that Cindy Sheehan was asking herself this week about the Loyal Opposition. I've been wondering about why not a single Democrat from the U.S. Senate joined the Black Congressional Caucus to challenge the balloting and election of G.W. Bush in January 2001.

I've been wondering why there's been such attacks on American values - by Americans - including: incarcerating people without trial; the so-called "Patriot" Act, nullifying key provisions of our civil rights; legislation passed against "whistleblowers;" in favor of "tort limitation;" against middle-class "bankruptcy;" and, the unbridled tripling of gas and oil costs, without so much as an inquiry. All the while, as debt amasses and taxes have been cut on the super-rich.

I've been wondering how so many - including Hillary Clinton and John Edwards - could vote with the administration to invade a sovereign nation. If there was doubt then, what do we call it now as 116 and counting became splattered souls from shattered families during May?

I've been wondering why the Dems didn't play the same hard ball with this administration, as this administration plays against the majority, now.

I've wondered how Reid and Pelosi - with a majority in both houses and support by most governors and state houses - have laid down and played dead to a failed administration that took one of the biggest losses by the electorate since 1932. Yet, when Bush won re-election by a squeaker, he was talking about "spending political capital" the very next day.

I was wondering during John Kerry's campaign what people meant when they said Democrats have no conviction. No leadership. No ideas. I wondered why Kerry didn't tear into his chicken-hawkish opponents who, for the most part, couldn't tell a mess hall from a hit of Mescaline.

And then I remember wondering, decades back, as the animals - peeking through the window at the pigs and the people playing poker - could no longer tell who were pigs or who were people on the final page of George Orwell's poignant and timeless novel, Animal Farm.

But what scares me most is, just lately, it seems I've been wondering a lot less.

My career in journalism began as a stringer at the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner before making my way east to write at the Washington Star. I toiled for more than a decade as a columnist for Gannett, the world's largest newspaper chain. As executive-producer and host of "Dusty Nathan's Winner's Circle," heard on a Philadelphia 50,000-watt radio station, and a CBS affiliate, I covered the worlds of sports and entertainment. I was proud to have several exclusives - most notably, one of Johnny Cash's last appearances, and also world-famous jockey Eddie Arcaro. Eagles head coach Ray Rhodes often played co-host on the show. My words have appeared in Rolling Stone, Time Magazine, and New York's Village Voice, as well. Many of my short stories and poems are published in anthologies. Recently, some have been selected and published internationally in university literary journals.

A wild-eyed conspiracy theory

Given the evidence of wide spread voter fraud allegations, perpetuated by the right wing with help from the DOJ, i.e. caging the votes, manipulation of voting machines, etc. What if the GOP thought perhaps they would give the "people" a crumb of the old Democracy...that they would make it look as if our votes really do count, (thereby "putting to bed" some of the most adamant accusations of "election fraud", if only for awhile) and allowed certain Democratic politicians to actually win (by coercion?)some of the closer races, even if only just a few, to make it look as if we have a Democratic majority...perhaps to make it look as though the Democratic party were opposing,  and in return for "winning" they were to go along with the Presidents agenda (Lieberman, comes to mind) while making awhite noise about opposing, thereby fooling the American people into believing we still have a Democratic Republic and that it still works.....how about that for a conspiracy theory?

The Grand Old Party of Jackasses

Chabuka,

Thanks for the comment. I hope you're wrong, but anymore who knows. A lot of things seem "funny" these days, but I'm not laughing - yet.

I mean, why would either party want electronic ballots? But the GOP does.

Speaking of the GOP. Maybe they can offically merge the two parties into one: The Grand Old Party of Jackasses.
