Headlined on 5/11/08:
One Hundred and Eleven (111) Pro-Impeachment Candidates (!!!)

by David Swanson     Page 1 of 1 page(s)

http://www.opednews.com

Tell A Friend

I've done no survey. There are probably a heck of a lot more candidates out there who haven't contacted me or I haven't happened to run across. But I have put together a list, thus far, of 111 candidates for Congress, the Senate, or the White House who support impeaching Bush and Cheney. Here's the list, organized by office and by state / district:

http://afterdowningstreet.org/2008candidates

Most of the candidates on the list are Democrats, either incumbents or challengers. Others are Green, Libertarian, Independent, and even Republican.

The list includes three candidates for the White House who are generally considered hopeless but whose campaigns are pushing positions supported by most of the people who obediently deem them hopeless.

In Senate races, there are a dozen pro-impeachment challengers on the list. Barbara Boxer could be added as an incumbent, since she's said she supports impeachment. But she's not actually pushing for it, so it would seem a stretch to include her. In fact, senators and presidential candidates have very little to do with impeachment. One of the most interesting senatorial races is just north of Boxer's California in Oregon, where two Democrats and an Independent all back impeachment.

Most of the candidates on the list are House candidates, and even including them may seem a stretch given the common misconception that the possibility of impeaching Bush and Cheney ends this November. Some of these candidates, Democrats and others, are running because the incumbent has failed to back impeachment and are actively pushing them to back it. In some races, candidates have dropped out already after successfully persuading the incumbent to sign onto an impeachment resolution. In addition, the new Congress will have the better part of the month of January 2009 with Bush and Cheney still in office, an impeachment need take no more than a day (some past ones have been that fast), and there is no bar on impeaching someone after they are out of office (one outcome of which can be a ban on the guilty party ever holding public office again).

Some of the House candidates on the list are incumbents. But I'm being generous to most of them, in that all they've done is sign onto a resolution or a letter. (If they've done less and just SAID something favorable, I haven't included them. And if they backed impeachment in 2005/2006 but not 2007/2008 they're not on the list.) In fact, I've listed in some districts both an incumbent and one or more challengers. Some of these challengers are running because they would like to see the representative from their district be the sort of person who would do more, who would speak out publicly, whip colleagues, and introduce original articles of impeachment.

Of course, I'm being generous to some of the challengers, too, by taking them at their word. Donna Edwards was in favor of impeachment until she won a Maryland primary (and the incumbent whom she unseated had been moved to back impeachment as well), but Edwards now opposes it and is not on the list.

Some of the candidates on the list have the Democratic nomination and are expected to win. That includes, for example, Steve Harrison, who is challenging scandal-plagued Republican Vito Fossella in New York's 13th District. Others are third-party or write-in candidates predicted to lose. Many of them are in California, which is fielding at least 35 pro-impeachment House candidates.

But, if impeachment becomes a live issue in the House in the coming 8 months, or if scandals over torture and other high crimes make the absence of impeachment hearings into a scandal, a key lever with which citizens will pressure incumbents and win media attention will be the presence of electoral challengers, no matter how poorly funded and spur of the moment. So, taking a few easy steps to make yourself a write-in candidate is certainly something you would never be ashamed of. And I would be honored to add you to the list.

Something else you would never regret would be signing your tax rebate check over to some of these candidates. If you do so, be sure to write "FOR IMPEACHMENT" on it, be sure to photocopy it, and be sure to send the photocopies of the check to Nancy Pelosi, John Conyers, recalcitrant incumbents, and the media.

Let's put the list over 200 by next month. How hard can that be? Most people can find 200 impeachment supporters within shouting distance of their front door.

Strike To Impeach

Remember a list a couple of years ago of Democrats who supported withdraw?

Remember packing the Congress with anti-war Democrats & even an anti-war Republican?

We voted in record numbers & instead of withdraw we got a SURGE.

WE MUST STRIKE TO IMPEACH. NO WORK, NO SCHOOL, NO SHOPPING.

NOT FOR ONE DAY. NOT FOR ONE WEEK. BUT UNTIL WE'VE WON!

Our economy is in the toilet & our criminal Congress & crooked President just schemed up a stimulus package to save their fat cat Wall Street financers.

NOW IS THE TIME TO STRIKE. STRIKE TODAY. STRIKE TOMORROW. STRIKE EVERYDAY UNTIL WE

BRING BUSH TO JUSTICE. www.votestrike.com

Mark E. SmithMark is an anti-civilizationist in San Diego.

Who do they want to impeach, Obama?

As I understand it, by the time any of them, if elected, could try to do anything, Bush and Cheney will be gone.

Obviously a pro-impeachment candidate cannot win the White House. Those who program the voting machines will only give the White House to someone who is pledged to uphold the precedent (and professional courtesy, which they themselves will eventually need as they continue the war) of pardoning their predecessor and the previous administration.

Not too many pro-impeachment candidates are likely to be elected to the House of Lords (Senate), the upper body where not a single senator could be found in 2000 to sign the CBC petition to block Bush from taking office, because at that level of wealth they are committed to party discipline.

And even if every pro-impeachment candidate won a seat in the House, they still wouldn't be a majority.

Congress, like the military, law enforcement agencies, or any multinational corporation, is a bureaucracy. It has a hierarchy, a chain-of-command, and time-tested methods of dealing with mavericks, trouble-makers, and insubordination.

Getting elected to Congress in an attempt to reform it, is as futile as a group of young idealists enlisting in the military, joining a law enforcement or intelligence agency, or going to work for Monsanto, with the purpose of reforming such organizations.

Once elected, a Member of Congress who wants to stay in office has to spend almost every waking hour fundraising if they want to stay in office. Most of their legislation will never make it out of committee even to be shot down on the floor, rejected by the other body, or vetoed by the President. And by the time they've accumulated as much seniority and power as John Conyers or Nancy Pelosi, they are completely beholden to the bureaucracy in which they could have survived no other way.

The last two great Congresscritters were the Ronald V. Dellums, who gamely but futilely attempted to introduce a national health care plan every single year of his 24-year tenure, and Henry Gonzalez, whose every dire prediction about banking and fiscal deregulation has come true. If people with their strength of character and determination couldn't accomplish anything, what do you suppose a handful of green newbies could do?

I Agree with Chris

This administration is guilty of so many crimes it would be difficult to list them all. We are losing our country...what are our elected representatives waiting for?? What are they afraid of? My Ohio congresswoman is not on the list and she will be hearing about it.  It's going to take a nationwide strike to get their attention.

A general strike is called for September 11, 2008, the  anniversary of the 9/11/2001 attacks on New York City and Arlington, Virginia.

General strikes shut down the normal operations of a city, state, or nation for a period of time. These strikes aim to force action on a single issue or broader set of concerns. The 9/11/08 General Strike has a central location - http://www.votestrike.org - on the Internet, which is linked to and reproduced on a variety of other internet sites. The site states the rationale for the effort:
The General Strike is a national call to action, from citizens to other citizens. It is not about a single issue. It is not an anti-war protest, a civil rights protest, an election fraud protest. It is not about torture, surveillance, corporate media, or the environment. This strike is about all these issues and more.
We all have different concerns, but we all have the same concern: we are being lied to and this government does not represent us. Join other Americans in demanding truth, justice, and accountability.
This is our country.
And our world.
A National Call to Action: Thursday, September 11th, 2008
No school. No work. Buy nothing. Hit the streets!
LOCK DOWN USA
The strike targets key issues facing the American public, issues that have not been addressed in any meaningful way by any branch of government. Unions, corporations & the major parties have failed to deal with pressing matters of war & peace, income inequality, crime & punishment & the meaning of citizenship itself. It has fallen to the American people to set things right!
Citizen discontent & other concerns of the strike include massive violations of civil rights.
The strike campaign argues that in our system of checks & balances when the judiciary & the Congress have failed it falls to the American people to protect our Constitution, Bill of Rights & our way of life.
Call to action:
No work, No school on September 11, 2008. It also includes “no shopping;” a suspension of all purchasing during the strike. 75% of our economy is consumer spending, when Bush says to shop, we must STOP!
The general strike calls for participants to “Hit the Streets.”  But why spend our time protesting in DC to be ignored? Unless we get in the streets outside our rep.s personal residences- who is going to care?
We need to mobilize locally- & demand national action. Few of us could go to Washington- but many of us- can go to our city halls or state legislatures- or local Congressional offices.
Tell the government that we're fed up with war, torture, corruption, & special interest funding our elections & our media.
Strikes have brought civil rights in the U.S. & around the world. Help make our voices louder than the mainstream media & corporate dollars.

"It  is  not  the  function  of  our  Government  to  keep  the  citizen  from  falling  into  error;  it  is  the  function  of  the  citizen  to  keep  the  Government  from  falling  into  error".
U.S.  Supreme  Court,  in  American  Communication  Association  v.  Douds,  339  U.S.  382,  442
In order to get involved, here are the five best steps to take now:

1) Sign up with your email address HERE in order to get updates,

2) Mark the day on your calendar and plan to be at a protest in your community,

3) Send this URL to all your friends, post it to forums, put it on your personal pages, http://www.votestrike.org

4) Take the time to help organize a protest. We'll send news on coordinators in your community,

5) Take the lead and help organize a protest on 9/11.
General Strike! No school, no work, no shopping, no life as usual... Not for today. Not for this week. Not until we've won!

My Congressman not on the list

My Republican Congressman won his seat by less than 6000 votes - the closest ever - and he's up for reelection.  His opponent is not listed as an impeachment advocate but this is Republican territory.

I don't understand for the life of me why that is.  To me, this is people country - lot's of hard working immigrant folks.  But they all fall in line.

Illinois - Congressman Roskam - THROW HIM OUT!!!

Mr Swanson

Here is one you missed.

Michael Cavlan

Green Party

US Senate Minnesota

In fact, I believe I was the second politicians in the country to call for Impeachment. Two days after the Downing Street Memo became public.  The first was John Conyers, so now I say that I was the first to call for Impeachment and actually mean it.

Oh And

For the record, I even have proof to back me up. It was at a Press Conference at the Capitol in St paul, Minnesota. The story was covered by the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

It was virtually the only corporate media coverage our campaign got.

The GOP members of Congress should be impeached for misfeasance in office for allowing the Administration to unilaterally crush the Constitution and run roughshod over the law of the land.

Archie, What about

the Democrats who have refused and in fact have fought to protect the Bush Administration from Impeachment? That of course is the vast majority of the Democratic Party elected officials, from US Senate, Congress down to City Coucil-persons.

Should they be Impeached also?
