UFPJ Statement on Impeachment

George Bush, Dick Cheney and other top administration officials have committed impeachable offenses.

These include leading the country into war under false pretenses, ordering violations of the Geneva Conventions, the U.N Charter and International law; violating the civil liberties of U.S. people in an unconstitutional manner; lying to the people of the U.S. and the world; and other high crimes and misdemeanors.

There is growing awareness of these facts among the U.S. people. From across the country there are demands that the Congress act on the principle that this is a government of laws, not of individuals. There is a grassroots movement demanding that Bush and Cheney and others be impeached.

Since its formation, UFPJ’s central mission has been working to end the war in Iraq and other wars of which George Bush is Commander in Chief. We welcome the growing movement to impeach him and others in his administration who have aided and abetted his crimes.

Some of our member groups and friends are already active in Impeach07, an umbrella forum in the impeachment movement. Others may see ways to incorporate impeachment efforts into their antiwar agendas, and we encourage them to do so.

it won't work piecemeal

I welcome UFPJ's support of the impeachment movement. Lacking Congressional leadership for impeachment, we have been asked to be satisfied with a hearing here, a subpoena there, and the prospect-- still only a prospect-- that heads may one day begin to roll. As the clock steadily ticks, month after month of this new Congress goes by and soon everyone who isn't already consumed by the 2008 races will be. For heaven's sakes! we're less than 10 months from the first primaries!

That means the nation's attention will-- FALSELY-- be directed to the question of whence the messiah we've been looking for will come. But, Virginia, there is no individual political messiah! Every candidate who has even a remote chance of election is or will be so bound to the corporate complex and the current party system that at most we're talking about low-to-moderate change.

We have a rare window of opportunity now to get the impeachment ball rolling and oust the criminals heading this administration. Only when it becomes clear to the party candidates that "whatsoever a [political leader] sows, that shall s/he reap will we have integrity in the White House.

pledgetoimpeach goes to washington May 1st...

We need ALL the groups who have gathered petitions and letters for impeachment to either join Anthony St Martin and bring their petitions OR send copies of them to him to take to DC for presenting them to Congress on May 1st. He can be reached at admin@pledgetoimpeach.org

I want to quote the comment made by St Martin, founder of Pledge to impeach.org concerning the article by Dave Lindorff:  "Rep. Danny Davis to Constituents: Make Me Impeach Bush"  http://www.democrats.com/node/12470

 Anthony St. Martin:

The discussion to which Mr. Lindorff refers in his article was not between Rep. Davis and his constituents but with myself as spokesman for the Pledge to Impeach campaign. Despite the waffling described here, Rep. Davis told me that though he "currently" defers to leadership on the impeachment issue his first obligation is not to the leadership, but to his constituents and that if he received a petition for impeachment from his district he would be compelled to represent the will of his people. I will take the man at his word until he breaks it.
Since my meeting with Rep. Davis, Rep. Diane Watson's Chief of Staff, Jim Clarke claimed his Congesswoman as well as Rep. John Conyers would also be inclined to represent a petition if it came from their district. So, I find it of the greatest importance that we not abandon our Representatives but rather recognize the presence of significant fear and intimidation (as I witnessed in my visit there) bearing down upon them from nefarious elements in our government and bring the will of our people in support of those who are currently left alone to fail in their duty of office.
We must bring our petitions, bring our signatures, bring our people to Capitol Hill, not to merely demonstrate and go home wondering what good it did, but use our right to petition effectively to bring pressure and support to those representatives who give such hints as did Rep. Davis and Mr. Clarke so that we can embolden them to stand up and overwhelm those who have overwhelmed our democracy. This will bring us results. This will bring us back our Constitution and way of life. This is what our movement at PTI will begin to do on May 1st when we bring to Capitol Hill citizen petitions from districts all over the USA - and the list continues to grow as the word gets out. It is easy to coach and criticize from the sidelines, we need to get in the game.

                ========================

EVERY legitimate petition deserves consideration.  The fact that a Congressional Member says yes to assertions that Bush broke the law, and that member agrees that he 'should' be impeached, that certainly fixes the legitimacy of the petitions and therefore is a demand that must be met - or that Congressman is REFUSING to represent the people whom he is SWORN to represent.

There is NO EXCUSE for Pelosi to put a priority on the 2008 election over the VOTERS DEMANDS for Impeachment!  She is WRONG to think that impeachment would be "divisive" and could possibly 'hurt' the Democrats in the next election! It is DEAD WRONG for Pelosi to let BushCo continue KILLING our troops while she WAITS for the 2008 elections!

WHAT WILL DEFINATELY HURT THE DEMS IN THE NEXT ELECTION, MRS. AIPAC-PELOSI, IS IF THEY CONTINUE TO DENY TO REPRESENT THE PEOPLE AS THEY ARE SWORN TO DO!!

Actually, what BOTH dems AND repubs should do in 2008 is vote a STRAIGHT GREEN TICKET for at least one term!

QUIT the corporate party machinery which decides who can and cannot BE a candidate and who finances BOTH Party's candidates. It's not REALLY about Dems vs Repubs. It's not REALLY about Dem Party vs Repub Party. It's not REALLY about candidate A vs candidate B.  The Partys are the Two Heads of the Same Snake. Candidates don’t have anything to do with it, and Party 'ideals' don't really have anything to do with it -  BOTH of the Corporate Owned Party Machines are BOTH financed by the same people, and all candidates are vetted by the same people, (Does anybody ever get ‘nominated’ who hasn’t passed the ‘party-loyalty’ test first?) all WE get is a “choice” between tweedle-dee and tweedle-dum ~ and we’re dumb enough to think there is a “difference” between the candidates and/or between the Dems and Repubs! We're deliberately set against each other to keep us divided and distracted.

Time we got a whole lot smarter a whole lot faster! Fascism is breathing down our necks hot and heavy!
The only “difference between Dems and Repubs is who gets to wear the crown.
