Many progressives no longer believe in God. It doesn't matter. Creator is on the side of We the People, no matter what one's beliefs. Personally, I find it reassuring to know that we are the good guys and the Force is with us. Why write an essay like this? Why is it important to point out that God is on OUR side? Several reasons: Firstly, It's true. Whether one worships Creator by the name of Allah, Yahweh, Lord, Jah, Wakan Tanka, Brahma, elan vital, or whatever, Creator stands for certain values. Truth, love, justice, compassion, fairness, peace are some of the qualities ascribed by humans to the divine. These attributes abound among We the People. They are utterly missing from the Bush/Cheney gang, who lie continuously, promote hate, subvert the courts and the Justice Department, practice torture and murder, pick on the little guy, and love war. We the People manifest the godly virtues, and God is on OUR side. Secondly, the Bush/Cheney bunch falsely claim that God is on THEIR side. They use Jesus as a logo. This claim MUST be addressed and disproven, because it fools many "born-agains", who form the dwindling Bush/Cheney popular base. Bush/Cheney have bribed evangelical churches with "faith-based" illegal government grants, and the bought pastors lead their flocks astray. They tell their parishioners that Pat Robertson anointed Bush to lead America, and God told Bush to attack Iraq. These and other such stories motivate a core group of Bible believers, who continue to support Bush/Cheney policies because they believe God put these men in power. Once the misled sheep are shown that God is on the side of We the People, not with the usurpers in the White House, they will withdraw their support from Bush/Cheney, who have already lost the support of most Americans. These evil men will be denounced as wolves in sheeps' clothing. Without the Christian veneer, Bush and Cheney will go down. Here are some arguments to use with diehard Christian supporters of Bush/Cheney: Bush's "anointed" leadership is destroying America's morals, liberty, economy, ecology, Constitution. What kind of leadership is that? What kind of God would place a destroyer in the White House? Satan, that's who. Bush's "God-instructed" attack on Iraq is diabolical, killing hundreds of thousands of innocents, destroying the infrastructure. The purpose: to steal Iraq's oil. Would Jesus approve? Jesus said to judge a tree (or Bush) by the fruits. The fruit of this Bush is a bankrupt economy, a shredded Constitution, a degeneration of public trust and decency, the loss of our country's good name, the degradation of our environment, a lowering of our standard of living- the list goes on and on . Jesus' favorite epithet, when confronting the Pharisees, was "HYPOCRITES!" The hypocrisy of our Pharisees today is glaring- look at the spate of sex crimes among right wing Republicans who pander to the "moral majority". Look at the disregard for the lives of our soldiers and of the Iraqi people among those so concerned about prolonging the life of a brain-dead woman. Look at the widespread use of depleted uranium, which dramatically increases the rate of spontaneous abortions and malformed babies. What hypocrisy! Bush/Cheney have borne rotten fruit. God is on OUR side. Thirdly, We the People yearn for peace. War only benefits war profiteers. We the People, and our brothers and sisters around the world, suffer from war. We activists are peacemakers, we have built an international peace movement that turned out 20 million strong in January 2003, in an effort to prevent the invasion of Iraq. Bush/Cheney are warmongers, revelers in war, profiteers from war, instigators of war. Peacemakers receive a special blessing in Matthew 5: 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.
The prophets gave us visions of peace. Across from the UN, the Isaiah wall reads "They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more." (Isaiah 2:3) When Jesus was born, the angels announced, "Peace on earth, good will toward men." One of the names of Jesus is Prince of Peace. Our Constitution is partially based on the Great Law of Peace, given to the Iroquois tribes by The Peacemaker, Degandawidah, who was an incarnation of the Jesus spirit. God is on the side of peace, on the side of We the People.
