Despite the falling polls, despite the deluge of horrifying revelations about lies and treaty violations and corruption, despite the Republican rebellion in Congress, Bush seems firmly entrenched. Few dare utter the "i" word. Not one member of Congress has openly called for impeachment.

Why is this? Are the Democrats so spineless, or so corrupt? Are the people so apathetic or stupid? Clinton has said, rightfully, that his impeachment for a sexual peccadillo was a misuse of the Constitution. Now that we have an administration that clearly has committed high crimes and misdemeanors, where is the motion to impeach?

The answer is that the "representatives" represent corporate interests, not the voters. The answer is that the corruption in Washington, both in Congress and among the bureaucrats, is many layers deep. The answer is that Bush rules by blackmail and intimidation, and no doubt has dirt on most members of Congress. The answer is that Bush backers fear the economic upheaval that would accompany a change at the top, and have dug in their heels. No doubt there are many other answers.

The God of truth, justice, love and peace is on the side of "we the people". Our personhood has legally been stolen, through the courts, over the past 150 years, by corporations, who now control the government. Many people have been praying for a restoration of control by "we the people", restoration of our freedoms, restoration of honesty and accountability among public officials. We are praying for our government to safeguard the general welfare, instead of distributing spoils to corporations. We are praying for peace.

We see our prayers being answered, albeit too slowly. Every day that goes by without a change in the White House sees more deaths in Iraq, more devastation of the environment, more erosion of freedom. How long, O Lord, must we wait for deliverance?

Lk 18:1-8
Jesus told his disciples a parable
about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary.
He said, "There was a judge in a certain town
who neither feared God nor respected any human being.
And a widow in that town used to come to him and say,
'Render a just decision for me against my adversary. '
For a long time the judge was unwilling, but eventually he thought,
'While it is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being,
because this widow keeps bothering me
I shall deliver a just decision for her
lest she finally come and strike me. ' "
The Lord said, "Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says.
Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones
who call out to him day and night?
Will he be slow to answer them?
I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily.
But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth? "

Let us keep faith that our rights will be secured, and that the malefactors in office will be brought to justice. Keep praying, our prayers will be answered through the energy given us to carry out impeachment.
