Jesus Weeps

I have not written in a while.  I have not been able to form the words to express my utter deflation and despair at the state of our nation and our world.

But I am writing now because I need to write today.  I am feeling more hopeless and helpless than I have in a long time about my country and the world.  I have no idea where this is going and I am going to give it to you uncensored and as it comes out.

I do know this:  Jesus weeps today.  And so do Reverend King and Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa and all the Buddhas and Rumi and St. Francis of Assisi and Ceredwyn and so many others.

And they weep because they feel like failures today; because they taught us peace and they toiled and struggled and tortured themselves with self-doubt and sacrificed and bled so that we might learn that loving each other, living in harmony and respect, and sharing the amazing bounty of the earth is the way of peace and blessing.

Today in America, the materially wealthiest society in all the history of humanity, we allow our brothers and sisters and babies to suffer horribly and even die for lack of money to buy healthy food, proper shelter, medicines and health treatments needed to live a decent, dignified life.  Why?  Because as a society we have decided it is better for some to suffer and die needlessly than to require others to share some of their excess wealth.

Read that again and try to hold back your own tears.  Ridiculous excesses of money over human lives.  Our priorities.  Jesus and King and Robert Kennedy weep today.

Great American flying death ships rain explosive fire on densely packed residential neighborhoods in ancient holy lands, killing and maiming any human who happens to be close enough.  Women, babies, men.  Yes, even men who take up arms against us are children of the Goddess deserving of our love and compassion.  But let’s pretend otherwise and just let it sit like this:  we have decided to support certain crushing, burning, killing and maiming of wholly innocent babies, women and non-hostile men, young and old, done nonchalantly and without expression of remorse or grief because they got in the way of our pursuit of pride, honor, plunder and power.

The United States Air Force Academy is well understood to have become a largely and overtly Christian institution.  Its pilots kill many more innocents to get a few unilaterally designated enemies.  Jesus said, "kill your enemies and take as many innocents as you need to make sure you kill ’em real good", right?  Fire bombing for the Prince of Peace.

            Jesus weeps today.

We bombed another ancient land, and then abandoned it, forcing it to sell the precursor crop of one of the most harmful drugs ever known to man to generate the money to feed its people.  Americans suffer and die from the very heroine our reckless belligerence delivered to our own streets

I read in the New York Times today that prices of rice and other staple foods in Asia have risen so high as to literally threaten people’s ability to put food on their families (couldn’t resist), and may lead to mass uprisings.  MSNBC told me staple foods in the United States have risen dramatically, also putting the poorer among us in danger of malnutrition in the land of plenty.  Of course, famine persists in Africa, Latin American and other poor parts of the world.  Then I also read that one reason food prices are so high is because commodities traders are running up futures prices, including the price of oil which has contributed to higher costs for food, to make a quick buck.  Here it is again.  We have made the following decision:  prices for the things we need to survive should be set by people selling pieces of paper back and forth to make as much money as possible before the survival essentials ever make it to the market for us to buy.

Money for the few over food for the many.  All the mothers and fathers of peace and love weep today.

But it is even worse than that.  In a world with rising food prices and rising hunger and food scarcity, and with dangerously dwindling supplies of clean, drinkable water, we are literally burning food and the water needed to grow it.

Yep.  We are taking corn, sugar cane and other crops out of mouths and turning them into fuel to run our cars.  Like I said, burning food so we can continue to drive the Hummer over to the 7-11 to buy the pint of ice cream driven across the country in a big truck burning, in part, food.  (I owe the ice cream run to a great social justice economist I heard on Alternative Radio a few years ago, but I can’t remember his name).

Feed the hungry, if they can pay your price.  Jesus weeps.

A brilliant, highly capable, well educated and tightly focused woman is running against a brilliant, well educated, highly capable and inspirational mixed black and white man for the Democratic nomination for President.  A ground-breaking and exciting development that would leave us not only with a huge advancement beyond our nice talk of racial and gender evolution, but also with a heck of a talented, effective and eloquent President.

beautiful article

i have not seen one false truth-thank you-and i have been weeping too!-what we need to do is simple -stop taxation of the modest family home so a person can breath a sigh of relief-taxing the family home is taxing life itself--the monies could simply come from some other means-oh but that might make that trip to vegas -or that new 2nd home-or that new speed boat -or that new jewerly-or that motor home--- more expensive--its an evil plan to tax the modest home for it taxes life itself -the earth belongs to all and if the more well off want more they should pay more-we as peoples who do not fight however are mostly to blame for we see the injustice and are cowards to fight--something our forfathers understood--so lets pick a date --july 4 2008--take up arms and form militias  and maybe the gov will take notice--or we can ride the hellbound train afraid to get off   afraid to fight afraid to threaten afraid to come out of our shells--and history has shown that if you are not a fighting sole you are a slave recieving scraps like dogs------------------

With the 2009 implementation

of Codex Alimentarious our satanic rulers move to eliminate one billion with starvation, just for starters. Grandma used to tell me a time was coming when right would be wrong and wrong would be right. I dont think Jesus is crying, I think he is making a list and checking it twice. He is coming back and he is not happy with certain individuals, he is coming to "punish those who have destroyed the earth" with war, with famine, with engineered disease and weather manipulation. The coming years will prove to be the bloodiest time the world has known.  The globalists have chosen to become the gods of all the earth, but they wont last too long. "Look up, your redemption draweth nigh".

Thank you Bruce

Thank you for this eloquent lamentation, Bruce. You have well articulated many of our reasons for grief and despair--though not all of them--i.e. there is no mention of global warming, peak oil, widespread ecological devastation leading to worldwide mass extinctions, and unacknowledged crimes against humanity by our own government to dupe us into supporting endless, bloody, imperialist warfare (e.g. the 9/11 hoax).

All of these horrors you name--and others--result from five evils which seem endemic to the human condition: Greed, Ignorance, Hatred, Denial, and Despair.  Yes--despair as well--the Enemy Within, the voice of negation.

How do we deal with such feelings of despair? Not by denying them nor suppressing them, nor by embracing a naive Pollyanna optimism, but rather by doing as Jesus himself did--embracing despair and death in order to transcend it:

"Lord, please take this cup from me--not as I will, but as Thou wilt..."

In short, we overcome despair by acceptance of our own (and others') suffering and mortality, thus overcoming our paralysis and restoring our inner peace, making good work possible. The Buddha similarly instructed his followers to recite every day the Five Remembrances:

(1) I am (we are) of the nature to get sick. There is no way we can avoid getting sick.

(2) I am (we are) of the nature to grow old. There is no way we can avoid growing old.

(3) I am (we are) of the nature to die. There is no way we can avoid death.

(4) I am (we are) of the nature to lose all that we cherish. There is no way we can avoid loss.

(5) My (our) actions are our only true possessions. Upon my (our) actions will I (we) stand.

So, as you suggest, let us weep--grief is healthy, but despair is corrosive.

But then let us get back to work, doing what needs to be done, taking care of everyone and abandoning no one, and maintaining mindful equipoise in our awareness of both the beauty and the suffering in every moment.

 Blessings.

Jesus understands!

I doubt anyone who has watched hman civilization for the last 10,000 years is surprised by anything except for the slow rate at which we learn.  However, if it is any consolation to you, evolution (God's solution to organisms learning to thrive effectively) has been far slower, hundreds of millions of years.

The solution is simple, evil thrives because good people do nothing.  If you want to limit the reach and damage done by evil you must fight it.  You must address it.  You must actively work to limit it.  Crying may express your feeling and emotions but does nothing to revese or stop the damage.  There are good people in this world.  Help them to do good works.  Try to make this world a better place.  If each of us does that, we have nothing to be ashamed of or regret.  Things only get worse when people do nothing.

thanks peter

glad somebody knows doing nothing begets nothing--i have wrote and called my elective officials--and i am sure they have heard from many the same things i have told them-to no avail--our russ feingold was the only one to vote against this war we are in -what a champ--but only one---which was a discrace to the united states showing not much hope for us without a fight--i do believe jesus would want us to fight--for he says he will when he comes back--a fight can be  love ---love can be a fight----oganised dissention doesent have to be violent to be a fight -but can be -but to do nothing but talk is a disgrace- a person can fight with love as its base -would our police attact us mace  and taser us if they knew we are acting out of love-would our government build more jails to house us all-i doubt this-

Skiidogs

Thank you.  I agree, one can fight with words and actions that do not have to incite violence, but rather resistance.  In fact, I think Jesus, Ghandi and King were exactly right on that score, and their impacts were HUGE!

One can only control people who willingly allow themselves to be controlled.  You control no one who resists and refuses to be subservient to unlawful, inappropriate and totally reprehensible actions.  I would encourage working to change the system, through the system, and only resorting to more extreme measures of resistance when you feel change can be achieved by no other way.

I believe  some change will be expressed at the ballot box this fall, but vigilence is ever necessary to ensure those in power are aware of the views of the public.  And it is necessary to convey to the public the concept of greater compassion and openness if we wish to solve these and future issues.

Of Course we must act

We must act.  I am submitting an article today titled Jesus Marches On, which is going to have to be a two-parter because it got too long. I do believe really feeling what we are doing to the world is important.  I just do not believe it is healthy to avoid the feelings caused by the suffering of others.  But it is only the first step in awakening and making change.  And we can never, ever let our grief stop us or slow us down in our efforts to bring healing and change to the world.

We must act, and I will talk about that in this next article and the second part to come very soon.  I have also been very active in social justice, political change and direct service work for years in my occupation and in my volunteer and personal life -- a path I started on because I was so moved emotionally by the suffering I saw in the world, even though I was making big bucks as a corporate lawyer at the time.

"REAL MEN" shoot guns, don't they?

Bruce, thank you so much for a beautifully written article. I, too, have wept almost on a daily basis for several years, now. I allow myself that when I'm alone and the thoughts of the brutality, greed and avarice of some parts of mankind come to mind. In point of fact, those thoughts never leave me anymore, I am just sometimes more able to focus on daily necessities of life.

I could go on and on about the horrors and the horrible people, but those ARE the reasons we cry already. I write, I speak and discuss, I object, I confirm, I do as many real things as I can think of to try to help this world set off in a better direction. At the end of the day, though, I am reminded frequently of my best friend (we went to high school together) when we were both REFUSING the draft: When he was being escorted to HIS trial one of the FBI agents "escorting" him said, "so you think you're going to stop the war?". My friend responded, "yeah, FOR ME!"

That sometimes serves to remind me that we must always be true to ourselves, and that even though our spheres of influence may be limited we can still make a mark on the souls of others.

Stop Paying the Rent

I hear lots of people wanting to march on D.C. and about other vigils and demonstrations. They are good things. But if one city stopped paying the rent, or got everyone to just walk out in the street and wait, change may finally come.

Thank you Bruce

I weep with you today. Your article is so powerful, and I wish it could be read by everyone, whether they directly identify with Jesus or not.

I left organized religion many years ago, in exchange for a deeply spiritual life. And yet, I get the full impact of your words, and your reference to Jesus.

Many of us are working peacefully, yet determinedly, toward uplifting human consciousness to a place where we can all know that we must unite, and work together, for the good of all, if we expect the human species to survive.

Thank you, and all of you who respond so powerfully and constructively to this kind of message. We can overcome our ignorance. We can create a better tomorrow. Yes, we can!

"Will America survive this debacle as a democratic republic? That remains to be seen.  The answer to that question will likely depend on if, how, and when the American people take responsibility for the crimes that have been committed in their name by a relatively small cadre of wealthy powerbrokers... who still believe that war, lies, intimidation, plunder and murder offer an economic comparative advantage over truth, honor, peace, justice, and basic human rights. Well Said

From reading the posts following Mark's article, "Jesus Weeps", it is apparent that we all share in his sorrow. How is it, that a handful of super rich have managed to cause so much suffering across the planet. The greeed and evil of these powerful-elite is almost beyond a normal human being to comprehend. There are surely many dark days ahead, so we must all hold hands, help our neighbors, and pray to our Creator to assist us against this dark force.  Resist this evil at all levels. We can and will win.

Jesus wept

Yes Jesus weeps at what is done and said in His name.  He weeps at the destruction of life through war, greed, racism and abortion.  He weeps that people, many of whom profess Him as Lord, lack compassion for others.

He weeps that Senators McCain, Clinton and Obama, along with the rest of their colleagues, vote to make the first budget priority the mass murder of war while the needy continue to suffer.  And none of them are the least apologetic for it, and all campaign to spend even more on death.

Not nearly enough pastors preach prophetically about this from their pulpits.  On the few occasions when such prophetic preaching gets mentioned in the news media, such as that of Jeremiah Wright, Americans - even a parishioner of his running for President - rush to denounce what he says and many attack him as unAmerican.

Weeping, Too

I just can't get over the fact that as formerly apathetic as I was, I am now a hellhound of social justice, and a campaigner and writer for change. If I can have my mind and eyes opened, then maybe it's not too late for anybody. Just preach the word, get out in your community and try to do things in one little corner of your world at a time, one person at a time. It's too overwhelming and depressing to focus on all that is screwed up. God is watching all of this. We have the tools to be humans, or animals, and the coming Depression will reveal which we are.
