Your country needs you Mr. President. I call you Mr. President because we all now know that you really did win the 2000 election. We all now know that the accusations they perpetrated against you during that campaign were nothing but lies. We know about Love Story, about Love Canal, and about the "invention of the Internet." We know the corporate media did a job on you sir and in the end, they allowed a fake news channel to erroneously steal the election from you. We also know that when the recount was warranted, they sent hired thugs down to pretend to be outraged citizens. We know the truth behind the hanging chads sir.
Your country needed you then sir, but it needs you more now. It needs you to turn around the nation after the worst presidency in our history. This presidency that never should have been. It needs you to stop this war and stop it now. No more playing politics by both sides. No more pretension. No more blood on our hands as history is written around us. Your country needs you to launch serious investigations into the lead-up to the war, the fake intelligence, war profiteering, the Valerie Plame saga, the Downing Street Memos, and yes, even 911. Your country needs you because we need the truth after 7 years of lies upon lies.
Your country needs you sir because of the damage that has been done to our own country as well. The damage to our educational system through an unfunded No Child Left Behind Act, as well as egregious cuts to Pell Grants and financial aid. Our own country sir has seen fiscal insanity reign as the rich become richer and the middle class has been nearly obliterated. We need you to restore fiscal sanity to our country. We need you to care about the millions of uninsured citizens in this country, allow sane prescription drug policies, and truly examine Medicaid and Social Security.
Your country needs you Mr. Gore because of the damage done to our planet in your absence. We need you because there are people like James Inhofe on the other side of the argument that are so stupid in their defense of the indefensible that they are dangerous. We need you to care about the planet we leave to our children, and their children. We need facts from scientists, not rhetoric from ideologues designed to muddy the picture. We need the truth sir.
Your country needs you Mr. President because as a candidate you would be a slam dunk. Your character would now be unassailable, because all of the previous lies about you have been debunked. Your demeanor will be far more relaxed because you have survived the debacle of 2000. Your credibility would be unimpeachable because most Americans will correctly recognize that you should have been the president for the past seven years, not the nightmare we have endured. People will not buy the corporate spin this time, they will gladly vote for the man they know really won already, and look forward to you cleaning up the mess you did not create.
I understand that you probably do not want to run again. I am sure that 2000 left quite bitter taste in your mouth. I am sure the lies they told about you has calloused you sir but I would appeal to your sense of public service. I would appeal to your general sense of what is right and what is wrong. The soldiers of this country need a leader who understands that you do not lie a country into a war and unnecessarily kill over 3,000 of them. The middle class needs a leader who will stand up for them and fight against the special interests of the ruling elite. The children of America need a leader that will actually fund the education initiatives that he passes. The college students of this country need a leader who will not sell out their futures for a tax cut to the wealthy. The common citizens of this world need a leader who will actually lead in the fight to preserve our precious planet. The leader they need, the leader we need sir, is you. We need you because you are not part of the establishment anymore. We need you because your character will not be in question. We need you because you were made for a moment such as this sir. To end wars. To save lives. To restore America.
Run Al, run.

Half of a half of a half
Significant? Don't laugh.
People who cannot conceive
The things they believe
Do more than annoy
May even destroy
Freedoms we enjoy
But do not deploy
Patriots. Don't be naive
Or your vote take leave.
Don't let one gaffe
Write your epitaph.
Make a choice for freedom tommorrow. Bush has got to go.

This might be the skunk in the Garden Party, but there is a little matter to discuss before urging Gore into the Presidential race.
The question has to do with character and toughness as they apply to Presidential decision making.
As background, I will remind readers that the news media changed their projections of who won the Florida electoral votes several times on Election Day 2000.
After the major networks called Florida for Bush, Gore called his running mate and staff around him and told them he was going to concede.
The running mate's response was that he had been in a lot of races and this one was too close to concede.
Gore insisted, and the running mate suggested that he wait until morning.
Gore conceded and then, after his staff started getting reports about irregularities, rescinded the concession.
A fatal flaw? Maybe not, but we still need to talk more about the quality of decisions Al Gore makes when he is under pressure.

nor should we continue this trend that seems to think we will be saved by such a one making an appearance. The problems that ail this nation do not call for a marvel Comics solution.
I agree with Bob Chapman in suspecting Gore's strength of character, and would add to the evidence pile his aborted run in the '04 primary as further proof of his rather mercurial changes of heart. I was in attendance at the Commonwealth Club in SF for Gore's incredibly passionate and resounding campaign speech, a speech that earned him one standing ovation after the next, yet, after two more such he suddenly and without explanation , disappeared from the race.
But this is not really an issue of personalities, it is a question of how to save our republic after all. In my opinion it matters little who one supports for the Presidency, it seems that, again in my own opinion, most miss the real point; we simply cannot afford this cult of personality thinking, this belief that a caped crusader will appear to rescue us from creeping fascism.
Anthony, in his most passionate argument, calls for the savior Gore to investigate the various and sundry illegalities and constitutional violations of this administration, yet our democratic majority in the House dithers and stammers about its inabilities to make any progress, to block any moves, to end war, to redirect our tax revenues to better serve our people. When will we grow up and understand that our government works, not for us , but for its own self interests? When will we plainly see that, despite the flowerty language, the promises, the good intentions if you will, it is always going to be business as usual. These politicians are beholden to their own futures not the welfare or best interests of you and I, they are in obeisance to the campaign check and not the will of the people.
Unless and until we grasp the essential fact that we are the super heroes here, not Al Gore, not Russ Feingold, not Conyers or Murtha or any of them we will continue to languish within a nation for profit that commits heinous actions in the name of corporate profit and we are all responsible.
It is up to the electorate to take our government back, and that means every one of us must cease this endless excuse making, this lazy thinking, sorry for that. It is the depth of sloth to sit on ones couch rueing the absence of some pristine savior , to say to oneself,"if only there was someone worth working for Id get off my ass and work", or some other excuse for inaction.
Gore will not save you, Anthony, nor will he run again, most likely, Hillary will not save you either, nor will Dennis Kucinich, though that latter is a fine and well intentioned and principled man. Edwards ,any of them, are a part and parcel of this myth It is only you who will save yourself. This nation will continue in its path of self deluded destruction until every one of us gets off that couch and goes to work.
Please excuse the passionate rant but if not now when?

Bush is not insane, his "handlers" are the big corporations, and they are not insane either, they are profit-driven with total disregard for human life. Why cannot you see this?
Damn Dems demonizing Bush to avoid looking at themselves supporting neoliberalism and destroying the world.
Pelosi doesn't think Bush is insane. Conyers doesn't think Bush is insane. Kucinich doesn't think Bush is insane. Gore didn't think Bush was insane when he conceded to him, and neither did Kerry four years later. They don't want to impeach him and they still give him standing ovations because the defense investments in their stock portfolios have doubled and tripled in value every year that he's been in office. They think he's doing a heckuva job and they won't vote to stop the war because that would be voting to cut their own interest dividends.

Planning on a remedy for the U.S. in 2008 is like a terminal cancer patient planning for his retirement.
Let's face it, what Bush started by attacking Iraq may be irrevocable.
Bush has already unleashed forces that cannot be easily controlled. And now, rather than talk to Iran and Syria and especially, Israel, about a comprehensive solution for Mid-East peace, the only remotely possible way to contain things, he plans on more violence.
Certainly, if he follows through with an attack on Iran, America, as most have known it, is a thing of the past. If Bush is not stopped, and soon, we will likely have an economically (and perhaps physically) ruined police state, despised among nations and peoples of the world like no nation before it.
We will be really lucky if the madman does not start WW3 this year. Given the terrible situation we're in right now, 2008 might as well be 50 years away.

Your well-intentioned essay nurtures illusions, both in Gore
& in your notion of what "America" is all about.
One must recognize certain unpleasant truths about America, its political system, its media, & the relation of these things to its people. Though the "Founding Fathers" produced many noble words, America has always been a class society where political power has been largely in the hands of a wealthy aristocracy. The media evolved to give this setup the aura of respectability. The population has been raised to believe that anything the US does is synonomous with "freedom & democracy."
The truth is very different. US society has always been characterized by deeply-rooted streaks of militarism, nationalism, corporatism & imperialism. These elements all function to support the existing social structure.
Now someone like Al Gore, though certainly a far more decent individual than the demonic gangsters in today's ruling clique, is not really opposed to the aforementioned deeply-rooted elements. He accepts them, but tries to put a "smiling face" on them. For example, while the demonic Republicans are now overt unilateralists in foreign policy, Democrats think it's important to at least pretend to "consult allies" (even while supporting the same military-industrial complex, & funding for it, that R's do). While R's go on TV & snarl with open hostility towards labor, Dems smile more on TV, say friendly things about "working men & women" (even while supporting the same free-trade policies, resulting in out-sourcing & job destruction, that R's do).
Recall that Gore chose Joe Lieberman, of all Democrats, as his 2000 running mate. That's quite notable, since Joe is very much like Bush politically. While Gore was VP, he pushed NAFTA (a highly pro-corporate policy). He supported the Telecom Act of '96 (extremely pro-corporate). He supported Clinton's NATO Kosovo war (a war that was rather similar to Iraq, though it was managed far more adroitly, in terms of domestic politics). Gore never made a peep of opposition against the criminally unjust Reagan wars in Central America, when he was in the Senate.
All in all, Gore was & is a mainstream US political figure. It's true that the media & Supreme Court screwed him in 2000, & that he's a far more decent individual than Bush. But that doesn't make him a cure for what ails us -- because today's horrors stem from US nationalism, corporatism, imperialism, & militarism -- and neither Gore, nor the Dem Party, opposes any of these things.

It is easy to come into a thread and cry woe is all of us and offer not on iota of suggestion about how to change anything at all. It is not 2000, it is 2006 and i think Gore has removed himself enough from the machine to not be beholden to anyone, which i pointed out.
No where did i refer to Gore as a savior, a title saved for only one individual. The fact is that Hillary is bought and sold already. I like Edwards but he gets no play from the media (probably because they are scared of him). I agree Kucinich is principled but he will never win in the two-party system.
Rant all you like, mock all you like. But for the love of God, stop with the nonsense that there is nothing we can do. If you feel that way, move to another country. Quit being part of the problem and start being part of the solution.
Sorry if this seems harsh but to take a simple article like this, which is merely pointing to someone i felt is cleaner than everything being offered and COULD win, and turn it into the end of the world does not help anyone.
Be well,.

You bemoan the lack of suggestions so I repost the one you so conveniently missed:
