The Pentagon's Pied Piper

The Pentagon’s Pied Piper

We are Americans who have reaped the benefits of living in a free country.  We have enjoyed the benefit of freedom because of the men and women who have served and who are serving to protect our Constitutional Republic. We know the freedoms we enjoy were not free, and that many generations of Americans have paid dearly for them. Their sacrifices have delivered us to this point in history. We are the freest people in the world.

As Americans, bequeathed the gift of freedom, we in turn, must deliver it intact to the next generation. It is our responsibility to guard it. It is our right, and it is our duty to speak out against ANY hint of a threat to our hard won liberties. We did not acquire, nor can we hope to maintain, our freedom by cowering to “the powers that be.”

That said, the topic of this letter is Military Recruiting on High School Campuses.

At the age of 16 and 17, our children are just beginning to drive. They cannot vote and are not considered mature enough to make decisions for themselves about alcohol. Why then, are they old enough to make decisions involving matters of life and death? Why are they subjected to the predatory sales pitches of Military Recruiters on a regular basis at school? Why is the Department of Defense (DOD) trying to become a partner in our public school system?

As part of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002, any school that receives Federal Funding is required to provide Military Recruiters with access to our children and their personal information. The information is stored at the Pentagon in the Joint Advertising Market Research & Studies (JAMRS) central database. In addition to the directory and academic information that schools are required to provide, they are complicit in providing information that is even more personal. Most schools actively promote the use of an aptitude test “marketed” as a career skills assessment test. I use the term “marketed” here because the DOD has hired marketing firms to help them sell military enlistment to potential recruits. The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) was developed by the DOD. It is the admissions and placement test for the U.S. Military. Students generally take this test in their junior year. The test is administered and evaluated by the military. The information becomes part of the student’s record in the JAMRS. Recruiters use the collected information to do TARGETED RECRUITMENT of students in the 11th and 12th grades. They use sophisticated methods to determine exactly how to approach our children and get results. The goal here is to get your child to enlist!

You and your child may or may not have considered the possibility of a future with the military. This option is entirely personal, and should be your family’s private decision. You should be aware though that there is a very aggressive recruitment program going on at your High School. Ask your children how often they see Military Recruiters on campus. Ask them if they have seen one of the “really cool hummers” with the big screen TV and video game in the back of it. It was on my children’s campus last Wednesday.

My intention with this letter is to inform other parents, of what I myself have just discovered. I personally do not approve of our schools allowing our children to be manipulated with these sophisticated marketing techniques. I believe this DOD program puts parents at a significant disadvantage when it comes to helping our children make decisions about their career goals. Our children do not have the experience to recognize a salesperson when they meet one. They are especially vulnerable to those who come wrapped in “all the glory” of honor and country, those who know exactly which buttons to push. This is not a level playing field, and not one that our children should be facing at school.

Lastly, but equally important, why is the Department of Defense involved in our public school at all? The implications of trends like this are frightening. Is this going to be another Federal Policy that we allow “them” to force on us? Are we going to accept it? It is something we had better be thinking about because Military Recruiters are playing the Pentagon’s Pied Piper tune in the halls of our public schools.

Recruiting High School kids

Please do a little research on this issue and make some noise.  This is another Federal Policy that is under the radar.

Yes I am guilty of not being aware myself

I considerd myself to be pretty aware of things going on in our country.  I have spent the last 2 years doing little else but reading and watching etc. etc.  This topic, however, escaped my attention.   I cant be the only one who missed it, hence the reason for my writing the article.  Recruiters are not just on campus every once in a while anymore.......they are there "all the time" as the counselor at my kids school told me.

Mandatory Uniforms

We had a great shock at the beginning of this school year.  Our daughter was enrolled in "Freshman Enrichment Seminar," a mandatory 9th grade class described in the course bulletin as a class to build communication, leadership skills and study habits - skills they would need to succeed in high school and college.  This nondescription sounded like a work retreat to us, and did not even register when we were signing off on the class choices the year before.  Nor did it register that the class was mandatory.

On the first day of school she talked about the class.  The ROTC instructor was teaching it, in the ROTC room, and told them they would be getting uniforms and marching with the ROTC students every once in a while.  The uniforms were optional, but you'd get extra credit for wearing them on certain days.  He also described the fabulous scholarship opportunities offered by the army, and the field trips (in humvees) to climb rock walls they would be enjoying this year.

Visits to the principal by both me and my husband, yielded strongly expressed information that this class was not ROTC, nor was there recruiting going on at all.  It was only to diminish the failure rate of the freshmen.  We were also informed that as it was a mandatory class, our daughter would receive a failing grade on her record/GPA if she did not attend.

With the help of other parents and local news, we were able to get the school board to offer alternatives to this class, and at least 1/3 (estimated by the students) opted for the demilitarized version.

It was shocking how insidious recruiting is in school, and what amazing accomplices our schools have become.  I allow that the school may have been unaware of the extent of the recruiting, since all the people who had anything to do with creating the course said there was no military connection.  It is possible that the ROTC teacher stepped in to save the day, and volunteered to teach the class.

Recruiters

It sounds like your school was indeed working extra hard to enable recruiters to influence young people. Legally, recruiters are not supposed to approach children under 17, probably why everyone in charge of the program claimed pure intentions.

The Dept of Defense encourages recruiters to become so involved in our schools that teachers and administrators see them as an indispensable asset. As a result, they have more access to kids at a younger age, thus our children will be familiar with them in uniform and more responsive to the idea of enlisting when they are old enough.

When I started questioning my school about this issue they acted like there was noting wrong with the ever increasing presence of recruiters on campus because they are a good influence on the kids and they offer wonderful career options. I actually felt like I was in the twilight zone when I spoke to the school counselor about the ASVAB.

Instead of thinking about making changes to the policy, officials at my school personally told my kids they were free to get up and walk out of the room if recruiters came into their class.

Over the last few years I have talked to several parents who were mystified when their kids enlisted. I think the answer is that parents are not aware of recruiters manipulating their children --- behind their back.

As our kids approach graduation from high school, most parents begin to loosen up a bit and try to let them make their own decisions about career or college choices. All the while, not realizing that at the very same time kids are being heavily influenced by recruiters at school.

Also disturbing, if you look up Militarism, you will find that all of this goes hand in hand with the current political climate.

After this article was in my local, small town newspaper, the response was that I was an unpatriotic, liberal/socialist military hater.

Good luck in your hometown
