It has come to my attention that you haven't actually resigned. And while I'm sure that I fight a lonely, uphill battle, I would like to ask that you reconsider and not resign. Judge John Roberts can continue his confirmation hearings and be confirmed to replace Judge Rehnquist.
However, now that we know that George Bush is going to nominate some one who has next to nothing in common with you, a change of heart would be surprising but not impossible.
I am a 47-year-old divorced mother of 2 teenagers. I truly am fearful that my civil rights and those of my mother and daughter are about to be confronted with the bias of an overly conservative Supreme Court dominated by white men.
I know I do not know your personal situation. I know that you do not know me from Adam. However, I feel that I must implore you to reconsider your resignation; for my own benefit, for the benefit of my family and for the benefit of all women in the United States. It is that important.
Please do not leave us to the wolves that will not support our right to privacy. Please do not put people who question whether or not our education is for the better good in charge of our civil rights. Please make one more sacrifice for the women of this great country of ours by deciding to stay on the Supreme Court until at least January of 2007.
I say January of 2007 because I believe that the conservative fire that has swept this country is finally beginning to be extinguished by it's own ferocity. People are beginning to understand that George Bush isn't a moderate. By January of 2007, I believe that the make up of the Congress and Senate will be enough changed that George Bush will have to replace you with a moderate who more closely resembles your positions.
I hope you take a moment to at least consider my request. And don't think I don't realize the amount of courage that it will take for you to do this. You are a strong woman though. You are an independent woman. You can do this. And remember, while many will be negatively shocked by such an action, there will be many more of us who will thank God you did.
I applaud and second your appeal to Justice O'Connor to remain at her post for one more term or even two. Refusing Bush the opportunity to further influence decisions by the highest court is an admirable reason to request her to stay her retirement.
Of course you assume that , in the next two elections, we will see a balancing of the legislature and a return of the White House to Democratic control. Perhaps, perhaps not. The so-called "conservative fire" of which you speak is , in reality, a "neoconservative fire" not at all the same thing you should understand.
Conservatism is an honorable political position and, despite the rantings of many who dont at all understand the difference, one that has served our nation well throughout our history.
Neoconservatism is a recent aberration and one that corrupts the true positions of conservatives and does them as little justice as it does liberals and progressives.
There are conservatives in both major parties and it does them each no harm. There are also neoconservatives in the leadership of both major parties and it does them and us major harm.
