Terrorist Watch List Nears One Million

ACLU

It wasn’t long after 9/11 that we began hearing from Americans who were having problems getting on airplanes because, they were told, their names were on terrorist watch lists. In typical Bush Administration style, these systems had been roughly thrown together with little thought for questions of guilt or innocence or fairness to those unfairly targeted.

In the years since, our nation's out-of-control watch lists have received a lot of terrible publicity, such as when famous people like Sen. Ted Kennedy or Yusuf Islam (aka Cat Stevens) got trapped on them, or when 60 Minutes discovered that the list included the president of Bolivia, dead people, and dozens of common American names like Robert Johnson and John Williams. Despite all this publicity, and the problems faced by thousands or millions of frustrated innocent American citizens, the problem has not gotten better. In fact, it has gotten even worse.

Based on numbers contained in a report issued by the Inspector General of the Department of Justice, the watch list is growing by 20,000 records a month — and now exceeds 917,000 people. And it’s growing by the minute — a growth that you can view in real time on our new page, which displays a rolling, real-time counter showing how many names are on the list, according to that DOJ report. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I am proud to be......

on that list, if I am.  It means that I, through my articles, have sacred the hell out of the "HairLess Bush" in Washington that what I write may wake the sleeping Dragon.

If that dragon should wake from it's slumber, and realise what this administration has done to our freedoms, rights and all of the criminal act commited, will send the people into a gallows mood and send some loafers falling to the ground.

Unlike Mr. Morris,

I am not "glad" to be on the list if I am indeed on it. However, I am proud to denounce this usurping Administration and if puts me on the list, so be it. I will stand firm.

If Ted Kennedy was put on it (probably for being Liberal), then certainly I must be on it. Maybe that growing counter is all the Repubs jumping ship from the Bush economics and the FEAR of a draft if McCain wins.

I'm on the ACLU's mailing list so I already read  this article; however, I am so glad to see it in OpEd.

You can understand why it was so important for the conservative movement to propagandize and label the ACLU as "commie". It's been part of their bigger picture for 30 yrs run of controlling our country.

We can change it. It's the turn of the Enlightenment. We must take some pages from their playbook and hold them hostage with their own devices.

It's time to put Chertoff out in the public. It's time to expose his "Dual citizenship" and ties to Russia and underpinnings. It's time to hold his feet to the fire, and get this list out in the view of the public and in full, of who is being put on this list, names etc.

If there were that many terrorists in THIS country, we'd have been bombed many times over by now. Americans have the right to be notified if indeed, their name is on the list BEFORE an arrest is made.

Kudos to the ACLU for all the great work you do.  Our civil liberties were and are the only thing that separated us form other countries and what truly IS what made this country great.

Let's remember that it's not the Administration acting alone

Congress is obviously deliberately working to convert us to a dictatorship. Lacking Congress's backing in passing unconstitutional legislation, repeatedly again and again, even the Bush Administration couldn't be doing all the serious damage it is doing.

It would seem apparent that Congress wants power and control, not a Democracy.

What is the solution?

I suggest it's time for people to team up in 5's and 6's to challenge each targeted Congressional seat. IE 6 people campaiging for the same seat, because incumbents will surely win over only one challenger's bid for public office.

With only 500+ Congresspeople and millions, trillions of Americans, surely it would be *easy* to get 3,000 people to campaign for public office?

I am not so innocent as to think that campaigning is easy or that most people would readily do it. But out of trillions of people, surely a mere 3,000----that's six people per Congressional seat----would be willing to step forward?

Let's please keep the good people in office but toss out the rotten apples. Because without such work, we don't even stand a chance. That's my "take" on it, for whatever it's worth.

Thank you all.

If this doesn't "Poo-poo" the war on terror, what does?

Hello again friends
A thought occurred to me.

Wouldn't it be the coolest thing in the world if people no longer "bought into" the war on terror, instead more accurately calling it the war OF terror...

would'nt that change dynamics a lot?
How much would Congress and Bush be able to get away with, if the war OF terror was publicly bashed?

Okay, let's get to work. It will only take ten minutes.

Let's take out our pens and write letters to the editor exposing the war OF terror just for what it is: A fake. A witchhunt. An act of incompetence and deliberation combined.

Anybody who is competent would have a social security number etc for the correct Robert Jones, and not tag ALL Robert Jones's and Tom Smiths, etc nationally and abroad.

Anybody who is not on a witchhunt would NEVER put Congresspeople on the no-fly list.

What's all this ka-ka about putting DEMOCRATS specifically on no-fly lists? Trust me, Democrat that I indeed am, I would say the same were it somebody Republican, INdependent or Green. The point is, why target Congresspeople? Tell me that is NOT a witchhunt? Yea right.

Time to expose this for what it is. A lot of hot air.

The Iraq War was conceived based on lies. Why not the War on Terror, the hunt for American "terrorists", the warrantless wiretapping, the overturning of the Constitution with unconstitutional legislation, and and and....

Let's refute this right now and overturn the war OF terror and stop the ransacking of the Constitution! Expose this war OF terror as a bluff, a scare tactic and a witchhunt affecting ORDINARY AMERICANS, NOT TERRORISTS!

Thanks for all your help. And please spread word, asking others to do the same.

As we enter the last half of 2008, it is becoming increasingly clear that whatever this rogue administration and congress has planned for our final demise, is about to take place. I fully expect to see sites like OpEd either seriously compromised or gone altogether.

We have little time left, if any at all. Stand up now or there will be no peace.

I'm with you!

The idea that terrorists can be found by collecting information on millions of citizens is ludicrous.  This IS the equivelant of looking for a needle in a haystack.  It is also the indicator that they are not looking for terrorists at all.........they are hunting us!

The terrorists we need to fear are holding court inside the golden walls of government.  The government is not trying to keep us safe from foreign terrorists......they are working to keep themselves safe from us.  WE are the enemy they fear.
