What happened to my country?

What happened to my country?

Once sweet land of liberty

Now filled with lies and spending

Where selfish greed is ascending

What happened to my country?

Once a sweet and hallowed democracy

Now filled with malls and shills

Where politicians hawk their frills

What happened to my country?

Once home to freedom’s patriots

Now desecrated by plutocrats

Where Republicans rot with Democrats

What happened to my country?

Once pleasured with virgin green

Now stained with Starbucks and Wal-Marts

Where dollars have replaced smarts

What happened to my country?

Once filled with connected people

Now sprawled with monster homes

Where isolation thrives on cell phones

What happened to my country?

Once a healthy place where people walked

Now diseased by SUV addiction

Where children learn consumer affliction

What happened to my country?

Once respected and loved worldwide

Now hated, resented and feared

Where corporate greed has domineered

What happened to my country?

Once with decent balanced government

Now lacking politicians with intelligence

Where the President suffers self-indulgence

What happened to my country?

Once with courageous newspapers

Now filled with spinners and bloviators

Where we are entertained by investigators

What happened to my country?

Gone

Well, I have some sympathy with this (though I think you're

taking an overly romanticized view of America's past). Let me note, though, that in line with what you're expressing, Paul Craig Roberts' article on CounterPunch today starts like this:

Pat Buchanan is too patriotic to come right out and say it, but the message of his new book, Day of Reckoning, is that America as we have known her is finished. Moreover, Naomi Wolf agrees with him. These two writers of different political persuasions arrive at America's demise from different directions....

Thanks

Nice poem. I really enjoyed your book Delusional Democracy and it was one of my favorite books from the past year. More and more, you are being proven right by the actions of the Democrats. Unless there is some type of coalition that arises between the reasonable right and left then there appears little hope of achieving a vital democracy. Perhaps a Ron Paul/Dennis Kucinch independent ticket would fit the bill. Such a ticket would impact both major parties as well as hopefully bring more libertarians and liberals back together. Again, thanks for your excellent writing and thinking. Peace.

Nostalgia. Not for me thanks

Joel,   It seems to me that America was founded untruths.  The more I began to understand what acts were perpetrated on the native indians, ie "The trail of tears", "Wounded Knee" etc. the more I am not surprised by what is happening today.  Have we simply come to our logical conclusion?  Soooo, no more nostalgia for me.
