This Christmas I wrote a story on my travels around our country and my rescue of an Akita named Buushi (Boo-she) from the sandy beaches and bikini clad woman of California. (We both miss that part!)

Buushi Road Dog

Boo Boo and I traveled the country back home to Pennsylvania via the southern route through New Mexico, Arizona and Texas. She did over 3000 miles in the car and loved every minute of it. I built her a bed where she could prop her head between the seats and she loved to look out the front window where we were going. We stopped at several scenic sights along the way home and got water, potty break and kisses. It was the trip of a lifetime and I am glad I could share that with her.

When we got back home there was a lot of snow and ice on the ground that Boo Boo had never experienced. Being that her legs were not the best, she had a lot of trouble walking outside and her pads would freeze not being used to the cold. I would limit her outside activities and little by little she got better with the weather and started enjoying the snow as an Akita should. The other problem was her coat was not set up for cold weather because she was from Southern California. Next winter she will have a blast when her body readjusts to the changes in the seasons and she grows her fur for the winter.

Buushi

There are very few things in life that you can have unconditional love for and it is returned. Your children, that one special soul mate and your pets. From the moment Bo and I met, we had a special bond that you can see and feel. We are both old farts who enjoy each other everyday. If husbands and wife's treated each other as some people treat their pets, divorce would be way down.

Several weeks ago the people from the Pet Project Foundation http://www.petprojectfoundation.org/ contacted me to see how Buushi was doing. I told them how she has a sparkle in her eyes now and chases me around the house to play. They could not believe that she was going for 1 or 2 mile walks (when weather was warm and roads clear) and they were so happy she was fine. I also promised this follow up story so that they could put into their news flyer. If you are in the San Clemente/Dana Point area, stop by their shelter and rescue the animals there. The joy that I have once again found in my heart can be put into yours with a simple act of compassion.
