There are many definitions of the word insanity. One of them is that a person cannot understand the nature and consequences of their actions. Another is that the person is a danger to himself or herself or to others. Another is that the person dresses up in a white robe and goes running down the street screaming "Help, the world is on fire."
People think that if they are taking a herb, a plant and not a prescription drug then the herbal remedy is not powerful. According to many, herbal remedies were created by God and drugs were created by mortals. Who is more powerful? If you don't understand that herbs can be very powerful then have a salad of hemlock. Then take 2 aspirins and call me in the morning.
When antibiotics were discovered they were called the greatest breakthrough since the invention of the mp3 player. They were hailed like Caesar. Salad. The antibiotics killed a part of us, bacteria, and kept many alive who would otherwise have died. This is why in the past two thousand years the population of the earth has grown from 1 million to 6 billion. It is projected to hit 9 billion by 2050 at which time we will have eaten all of the herbs and will be forced to live exclusively on man made food. When Karl Benz invented the automobile 150 years ago it was thought to be the greatest discovery since Lana Turner at the soda stand. Without cars we wouldn't be invading the Middle East today for their oil, and the greenhouse gases would not be melting the Arctic and the Antarctic. The Ocean would not have risen 50 feet and Kevin Costner would not have blown a bundle on Waterworld. Who knew?
The bad news is that antibiotics have horrible side effects. Imagine that your body is a large salad bowl. Take my salad bowl. Please. Inside of this salad bowl there are white flakes, your healthy bacteria, your flora and fauna, and black weeds, unhealthy bacteria, poisonous germs. When the antibiotic goes into your stomach and then your colon and into your bloodstream, it kills the germs. The bad news is that it also kills off the healthy bacteria, the white flakes. After you are done taking the antibiotics for a week, only black weeds, fungi, yeast remain in your salad bowl. These yeast fungi are live animals which then begin to have their own population explosion. Soon they have taken over your colon and they begin to eat their way through your colon into your bloodstream which then takes them to every cell in your body. The yeast candida then begin coating and eating through your organs until you develop every illness in the book. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure especially when there is no cure.
You may begin to develop depression, fatigue, yeast infections, emphysema which is where your lungs look like swiss cheese and you sit in agony in a wheelchair wearing a mask attached to oxygen tanks. You are quite welcome Doctor Frankenstein. You may not believe that your Doctor would do this to you. If not then ask why Doctors are handing out Paxil to suicidal patients when they are quite aware that Paxil makes the patient more likely to commit suicide. Or you may ask why your mailbox is filled with Viagra ads when your doctor knows full well that Viagra causes blindness. The list of prescription medicines with side effects causing death in the near and long term is endless. It's all about money. This is why Jesus overturned the tables of the money changers and called the Holy Temple a den of thieves. Your local drug store is no Holy Temple. It may not even be located in Jerusalem.
Sometimes antibiotics are fabulous to kill bacteria which are about to kill you. If you have to take them then after you are done then begin to take acidophilus. Acidophilus capsules contain billions of the healthy bacteria. These healthy bacteria are also found in yogurt. These herbal remedies, flora and fauna begin to multiply and fill your salad bowl with white healthy flakes and leave the black weeds nowhere to grow. Also take grapefruit seed extract pills which kill the black weeds. Most importantly being to take oregano.
Nature's most powerful antibiotic is oregano. The herbal remedy oregano has been clinically proven to kill off bacteria which the strongest antibiotic cannot, viruses, mold, fungi, yeast, and the black weeds in your salad bowl. The herbal remedy oregano comes in several forms. It is sold in your Health Food store as oregano oil, and oregano capsules. You can use the dropper to put some directly under your tongue, or into a bit of grapefruit juice. The good thing about oregano is that it does not kill off the white flakes. Instead it promotes their growth as it kills off the black weeds.
Many people suffer from sinusitis. Sinusitis is often just a bunch of mold which is naturally in the air we breathe, and bacteria, and fungus and parasites in your sinus cavities. I live a twenty blocks from Oklahoma University. They made some major test discoveries using traditional medicines and herbal medicine with sugar diabetes. I heard it on local news as I was getting ready to leave. What I heard went something like this:

The yeast eat their way through your colon? LOL. That would be a perforated bowel, as occurs when the appendix ruptures, and would be etremely painful and lethal.

That's a lot of ruptured organs and illnesses just from taking an antibiotic. It's amazing that with all of the times that I've taken antibiotics that I still have organs.

I do know what was in YaBob's crock, but I think he drank the whole thing. I hope there was a natural juice of courtesy in it or an antidote for his discourteousness.
Yabob, I have taken shots off and on for allergies for fifty-three years, or I should say forty-three years. About ten years ago I started juicing a little before my worst allergy seasons began which were and are Rocky Mt. Cedar and Elm which run back to back December 1 to April 1. I have not had a shot since I started juicing and I have not been in the hospital for allergies. I do not know how or why it works. I really do not care how it works. I just know it works. I know no one in the juice machine industry, and I do not know anyone in the vegetable and fruit industry.
As far as the medical industry is concerned about our health, there are many fine doctors as there are some terrible ones. I can name a Doctor of internal medicine who is responsible for killing about twenty patients in this town of one hundred thousand residents. He was written up over twenty times by ICU nurses. When he killed the wrong blue blood in town, the hospital fired him. He is now a bona fide doctor working in or around Little Rock, Arkansas. Because of abuses by drug industries, we created the FDA to protect us from them. With the combination of the AMA, the drug industries and the insurance companies, the US is rated twenty-seventh world wide, even behind Cuba. Why is that? We have the greatest medical schools in the world, greatest medical research centers, the very best doctors, and the most pharmacies per capita? I will let you figure out why we are rated twenty-seventh.
I probably disagree with much of Karen's premises about religion, but why a diatribe against her? I can less about Scientology. The more I see of some of the Hollywood characters embracing it, the more I tend to dislike the movement.
As far as natural remedies and antibiotics, I guess my M.D. is out to lunch when he says that too many antibiotics can cause serious illness. I thought that was general knowledge. There are really some serious diseases caused by over use of antibiotics. Still, if I have an infection, I stick my butt out for penicillin and glad to get it.

The implied premise of the author's comments is that antibiotics and scientific medicine in general are a bad idea and that herbals should be employed instead. It is well known that antibiotics can do harm, even kill. But it is understood that they do far more good than harm and are a great benefit to mankind, facts conveniently ignored or hardly alluded to in passing. The message is clear even if not explicitly stated: you're better off with homeopathy or naturopathy or some other alternative to scientific medicine.
Your anecdote does not make her point or any point other than the fact that some herbals may be effective or partially effective for some medical conditions. Of course some herbals are medicine. Again, common knowledge. Foxglove contains digitalis and poppies contain opiates. Neither that fact nor the fact that antibiotics can be misused, ineffective or even harmful is an argument for calling herbal therapy an appropriate substitute for antibiotics.
Perhaps I was unnecessarily impolite. I apologize to the author for any of my response that ad hominem. But I remain steadfast in my opposition to the making of unsubstantiated claims by medical wannabes. It's irresponsible and potentially dangerous, especially when instituting ineffective herbal therapy results in a delay in appropriate therapy.
Look, there is no alternative medicine. Chemicals are all either medicine, toxins or placebo. If a chemical is capable of having a beneficial effect on your physiology, it can function as a medicine, whether it came from Pfizer and a test tube or an herbalist with a garden. If that chemical has an adverse effect on the body, it is a toxin. Some chemicals (most in use as medicines) can do both - help or harm - whether they come from science or folklore. And other chemicals have no effect (or a negligible effect) and are by definition not medicine, although such inert substances can confer a placebo effect.
Wherever it came from, herbs are also either medicine, toxin or placebo. Not alternative medicine.
