Is John McCain's quest for the presidency effectively over? by Mary MacElveen Page 1 of 2 page(s) |

So, where does John McCain go after shooting himself in both feet as he placed America in danger by inflaming hate as he has done this past week? I certainly do not know, but what he and his campaign did was inexcusable. In viewing this feed, you will clearly see McCain call Senator Barack Obama a “decent person” Note to Senator McCain, it is the way so many across this country do see Senator Barack Obama and why he is rising in the polls. One can almost see that he has abdicated this race when he answered a supporter who clearly stated that he was scared of Senator Obama and McCain stated, “He is a person you do not have to be scared of as president of the United States.” One must wonder if in that moment in time he somehow realized that his campaign was effectively over. In that feed a woman calls Senator Obama an Arab and that can be directly tied to where others who have spoke at his rallies and have used Obama’s middle name which is Hussein. In watching him on MSNBC, his dialing-down of this hate towards Obama was met with boos coming from his supporters. Never a good thing and one wonders if they will still support him for the duration of this campaign. Will hate-based broadcasters like Rush Limbaugh allow McCain to get away with this mea-culpa to his millions of listeners? Will these now disenfranchised hate-based voters sit this campaign out? I really do not know.
In switching gears in an act of self-penance, I would like to know who is in control of this campaign. Is it truly John McCain or his campaign staff? If it is his staff, then this stanza from George Harrison’s song, “While my Guitar Gently Weeps” is applicable, “I don't know how someone controlled you…They bought and sold you.” So much for being a maverick.
By playing to this hateful base one has to wonder how independents and moderate Republicans will vote. If I were them, I would run as fast as I can mea-culpa or not.
The ugliness of this campaign goes right back to the Republican convention held in St. Paul, Missouri. Their convention as opposed to the Democratic one was filled with an us vs. them mentality. Especially when Mitt Romney launched his attacks on liberals and where they demonized the media.
Now in this feed, you can clearly see how McCain supporters were either programmed by the campaign or did McCain play to the lowest common denominator in reaching out to folks like this? Pay attention to where one man states of Obama that he is a “One man terror-cell” Nice!
When McCain has stated of Barack Obama, “Who is the real Barack Obama?” we must answer that back by stating, “Who is the real John McCain?” How can we as Americans trust a candidate running for the highest office of this land to keep us secure when this week he left many feeling insecure? He can no longer claim national security in his bona fides.
Through the use of hate, both he and Palin have used a Roman candle in playing tinder-box politics given our current economic crisis.
Speaking of the economic crisis, this is what Rick Davis who is McCain’s campaign manager had to say of it, “I don't know if you really want to turn a campaign into a CNBC news show on the stock market," he said. "I mean it doesn't mean that we don't care and aren't trying to do something about it. It's just I'm not exactly sure what you say everyday." People do need to hear what these candidates are saying everyday and their specific plans in how they will address this one issue as president. Davis was dismissive towards those who are suffering and blew it big time.
Now onto Sarah Palin who was found to have abused her power as governor of Alaska and according to the AP, was “in violation of a state ethics law that prohibits public officials from using their office for personal gain.” They also reported, “The inquiry looked into her dismissal of Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan, who said he lost his job because he resisted pressure to fire a state trooper involved in a bitter divorce and custody battle with the governor's sister. Palin says Monegan was fired as part of a legitimate budget dispute.”
In watching the news today one pundit even remarked that this can be an impeachable offense. How can we as Americans trust Senator McCain’s judgment in picking as his running mate who was found by a bi-partisan body to have violated state ethics law?
She has been a drag on the ticket lately and should for some reason McCain or his campaign staff seek to replace her, again, it shows McCain’s instability. We cannot have that at this time.
In scoping out some reader comments to this story on MSNBC, this one jumped out at me, “I have decided to stop my lifelong affiliation with the Republican Party. The ONLY thing that McCain and Palin and their ignorant supporters have left are fear and hate!” This commenter who is from Tennessee no less also had this to say, “My White, working-class, Southern Baptist, pro-gun, pro-life, vote will be proudly casted for OBAMA-BIDEN!” Impressive!
One commenter from South Carolina even wrote, “did McCain just endorse Obama as pres?” Judging from what he said to one of his supporters, I can see how this commenter drew this conclusion.

McCain Making Nice
I have a lot of trouble believing that McCain has had a change of heart or pangs of conscience that are causing him to suddenly become respectful of Obama. I think it's much more likely that he's just going whichever way the political wind seems to be blowing...... again. Somebody in his campaign finally got the message that his hate-mongering tactics were backfiring, so he changed them. He's gotten very, very good at changing tactics, hasn't he? by Diane Vandermast (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 18 comments) on Saturday, Oct 11, 2008 at 8:24:00 AM

Is Obama really a US citizen?
Obama's mother was only 18 whe n Obama was born. This means even though she had been a U.S. Citizen for 10 years, (or citizen of Hawaii being a territory), his mother fails the test for at-least-5-years-prior- to Barack Obama's birth, but-after-age-16. In essence, mother alone is not old enough to qualify her son for automatic U.S. Citizenship. At most, 2 years elapsed from his mother turning 16 to the time of Barack Obama's birth when she was 18. His mother would have needed to have been 16 + 5 = 21 years o ld at the time of Barack Obama's birth for him to be a natural-born citizen. The Constitution clearly declares: Naturalized citizens are ineligible to hold the office of President. Though Barack Obama was sent back to Hawaii at age 10, any other information does not matter because his mother is the one who must fulfill the by don bybee (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 206 comments) on Saturday, Oct 11, 2008 at 1:46:23 PM

Reply: BS from MacElveen
What a pack of lies and misleading statements. This is the same crap as all the bogus Muslim attributions to Obama. Obama's mother was born in Kansas, and she was just as American as anyone in the U.S. The rest of MacElveen's article is not worth commenting on. by Berry Ives (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 2 comments) on Sunday, Oct 12, 2008 at 9:00:42 AM

Reply: Rubbish
I am not a Democrat nor a supporter of Obama, but this is nonsense. Under US law, we have two ways in which one is accepted as an American citizen by birth. Jus soli-born of the soil-a child born in America is an American. Period. That includes territories and protectorates. Jus Sanguine-a child born to an American parent, no matter where in the world that occurs, is an American citizen. It is a simple law, easy to understand. Contains no smoke and mirrors and does not require the convoluted logic expressed in the above post. Lots of October left
With the clear record of this administration, and the fact they are essentially the front men for the cabal behind the curtain, and that the results for this shadow government have been wildly successful in pursuit of their grand agenda, and with twenty days remaining in October to accomodate any one of countless surprise disasters, it would be premature to count out McCain regardless of how many times he manages to shoot himself in the foot. It ain't over 'till the cranky, senile, multiple-faced old bastard concedes. by Michael McCoy (7 articles, 1 quicklinks, 2 diaries, 487 comments [26 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Saturday, Oct 11, 2008 at 2:46:51 PM

If it were only so!
I do not think it matters how bad the son of Cain and sister Sarah muck up their campaign, the real worry is the voter fraud and vote stealing that will or already is taking place. I do not think the powers that run the Republican party would have allowed McCain and Palin to be their nominees if there was not a fix already inplace for this election. The real scary part is how far out of control the Republican neander-cons have gotten with their hatred and threats of violence. Our world is a frail tinderbox and it will not take much of a spark to set the whole planet off in a roaring fire that we will have no control over. The meek may inherit the world but there may not be much left to receive. by Hayesml47 (6 articles, 0 quicklinks, 4 diaries, 540 comments [10 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Saturday, Oct 11, 2008 at 5:59:49 PM

Youth And Vigour Makes Us Bigger
The 2008 presidential election is all but over. Obama will be the winner over an opponent that found it difficult to even get out of bed in the morning. McCain bit off more than he could chew by opposing a much younger and more talented contender. The American public is soon going to get a rare treat as they watch a relatively unknown personality take the job as leader of the most powerful nation on Earth. The economy is in shambles and his task will be huge. But with his youthful vigour we will be watching a new and creative approach for getting our nation back on course. With the election of the most liberal senator in Congress we can expect positive changes in the way Americans view one another. An organization called Unity House will soon be lobbying for the job of bringing the nation under one roof. Once approved and funded by Congress one million educators will spread out with the task of unifying the nation. This will be done by the knocking on every door by groups of socially diversified educators. They will be spreading the word that we are all brothers and sisters that must learn to love one another. There will be those that will be angry as he dismantles a cold war system that is costing the taxpayers over a trillion dollars each year, but he will succeed. Our nation will then see millions of new jobs created as our intra--structure and education system is rebuilt to meet the needs of the 21 century. Obama has not been harnessed by greedy insiders and will be free to pursue his childhood dream of making the world and the nation a better place to live in. by melpol (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 28 comments) on Saturday, Oct 11, 2008 at 8:49:16 PM

St. Paul MO
Mary, I enjoy reading your work & sure admire your viewpoint but you might wanna check your facts a tad more. Unless something drastic has occurred, St. Paul, site of the Republican National Convention, is Minnesota's capital. Quite a distance from Missouri. by Larry Retzack (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 43 comments) on Sunday, Oct 12, 2008 at 12:43:17 AM
