Playing hooky - a little taste of heavenIf you're like me, you harbor this fantasy that the work you do can't possibly survive your absence. Most of us are so overwhelmed by life's many demands on us, we can't step back and see the larger picture. But we know, if we take half a second to think about it, that there is more to life than work. While this is a simple concept, it is often incredibly hard to put it into practice. The Human Cost of Cheap Cell PhonesCivil strife in the Democratic Republic of Congo has cost 4 million lives in 10 years, as militias and warlords fight over the country's resources. The atrocities are funded, at least indirectly, by some of the biggest Western corporations. They see the country as a source of cheap coltan, vital to making semiconductors. Kathleen Kern connects Congolese suffering with the low prices Westerners pay for cell phones and laptops. By Rady Ananda  (4 comments)

How come our favorite online news services didn't get credentialed for the national presidential conventions?I just checked to see if the Congressional Press Gallery had credentialed me to cover the national conventions. They hadn't. But many of our favorite progressive news services hadn't been credentialed either. Yet the MSM who supported the invasion of Iraq, housing deregulation, etc have been credentialed on mass. If I was a progressive news service, I'd be really pissed about this. The false ideology that caused our financial failureThe title of an article by Lew Rockwell at LewRockwell.com, "The Greatness of the Market in a Crisis," contains the logical contradiction that disproves the title's claim and the premise of the article. The title ignores the glaringly obvious fact that if the market is so great, it wouldn't have created the crisis in the first place. By Ed Martin  (15 comments)
