Rally for Peace in Rock Hill, Soth Carolina by Timothy V. Gatto Page 1 of 1 page(s) |

"Littlest Peacenik" The peace rally at Rock Hill was a resounding success. Over fifty people showed up to hold signs and stand on the sidewalks outside of Winthrop University in Rock Hill SC, for almost two hours until the University Police asked us to break it up. Why? Who knows? We figured that we couldn't stay all day, so we decided to break up and go to the local Mexican restaurant for lunch. Maybe the University didn't appreciate the horns of the hundreds of cars that blared in response to our "Honk If You Want Peace" and "Honk If You Want Them Home Now!". Honk they did, and there was 'nary a bad word said to us. The only dissenter (if you could call her that) was some young air head driving an old convertible that had to put her top down and play a vacant minded song by Toby Keith who seems to make a living by supporting the war in Iraq. I'd like to ask him why we are fighting over there. He'll probably look at me, squint as if I just asked him what is the square root of pi and tell me "freedom?" If he got that far, I probably wouldn't want to try to embarrass him by asking who's freedom. I want to Thank Gregg JoCoy, a former candidate for the SC State Representative, from the local Green Party for putting it all together. The group is going to Rep. John Spratt's office Monday and try to lobby him. Meanwhile, they are going to make the Rally a weekly event.
All Age Event
There were a few girls there with the sweetest little peacenik, a girl of perhaps 1 ½ years old, dressed is a lions suit, with a sign on her back that said "Out of Iraq, I'm not Lyin!". They had a sign that said "W, U R Fired" with a pink slip hanging from a hanger. Very nice, and appropriate. The thing that got me was that all ages were there. Not just young people, but all ages, all getting along and supporting each other while working for peace in Iraq. When someone would mention the disparity in ages, the common retort was that if the draft was still on, we would see many more young people and parents out marching. They seemed to believe that not too many Americans have a "vested" interest in this war. I have attached some photos from our local rally.

The only thing missing is YOU.
Please can we NOT start to call loitering on a street corner for a few hours on a sunny Saturday morning chatting with neighbors: "working for peace"? Actually 'WORKING for peace' - especially under the circumstnaces we face in 21st century corporate dominated Amerika is going to require a LOT more from all of us. The corporations who control the machinery of government are not going to suddenly have a 'change of heart' and capitulate. Corporations don't have a heart OR a consccience: they have a balance sheet. The corporations that are at the gears right now are the ones who make weapons and weapons systems. They are the ones who PROFIT from war and industrial scale mass murder. They NEED conflict in the world to sell more weapons. This war is about corporate profit. They are trying to create new enemies to replace the Soviets. They are essentially 'recruiting' young, uneducated Islamic boys and men to play that role. The corporations want the American people to fear that new enemy and be willing to PAY for newer, more sophisticated weapons which they (the corporations) will develop and employ against the new enemy they are creating. WE THE PEOPLE must devise an organized strategy to take away their power. Corporations are NOT people - they are ficticious legal entities that exist only on paper (and now in digital files). "Working" for peace means WE THE PEOPLE must do everything in our power to remove the power of 'personhood' from corporations. Search for 'abolish corporate personhood' on the www for info to educate yourself and the neighbors you chat with while loitering on that street curb. Work for 'clean elections.' There is already info on the web about that too. It means political candidates would take NO corporate contrubutions - and therefore not 'owe' we them anything - which is how it should be. This is already happening in several states. Candidates take contrubutions only from individuals and pledge to refuse corporate funding. This allows them to be free of corporate influence and control once they are in office. AND first and foremost - make the personal commitment to be active in this fight for the long haul. It won't conveniently happen before lunch time at the cantina. Educate your children to DISTRUST corporate everything, from the products they sell to their propaganda advertising. We MUST raise a whole generation of skeptical, media saavy, non-consumers. Yes I think I know why you spelled South Carolina "soth" - the only thing missing is... you! Clever. Now Get busy! Saturday was only a token beginning... we have MOST of the 'work" still ahead of us. by mrk * (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 311 comments [12 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Sunday, Jan 28, 2007 at 12:59:19 PM

Reply: Excuse Me?
I have spent six to eight hours a day, almost every day for the last two years, either writing about issues, contacting my elected officials, arguing with right wing conservatives in South Carolina and generally banging my head against the wall and I have not done this to be lectured on what I should and shouldn't do by you. Thank U very much. Now go on and keep doing what ever it is that U think U should be doing and don't tell me what it is I should be doing. by Timothy V. Reply: OK - You're Excused (sorta)
Yo! Pay mo bettah, closer attention, eh? A close re-reading of the earlier comments will reveal they contain continual repeated use of terms such as: 'we,' 'We the People' and 'us'. See 'em in there? At no time does it take YOU personally to task, hmmm? But now I will: Get OVER yourself - this ain't about YOU. We - WE - need to grind it exceedingly fine and do it every f-ing day of the freaking week! NOT just for two hours on a sunny Saturday morning. Two hours on a sunny Saturday morning ain't 'working' for peace. That's 'partying for peace.' Which in itself can be productive too - but call it what it is. WE, amigo, all of US! P.S. - THEY would love it if WE started fighting amonst ourselves. (Don't go looking for reasons be get yourself 'insulted' - eh? That's a disease of the mind.) by mrk * (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 311 comments [12 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Monday, Jan 29, 2007 at 6:10:51 PM

Timothy, the photo's are great
Would you mind if I published them to the York County (SC) Greens website? By the way, today's vigil was attended by something like twenty people, including four students from the University of North Carolina at Asheville, several again from Winthrop University, and four students from South Pointe High School in Rock Hill.
