As we prepare to celebrate the New Year, my resolution is to hold George Bush and Dick Cheney accountable for their abuses of power.

In the last days, we have made real progress:

The mainstream media has awakened to this movement and to the extraordinary support you have given it. Your calls, letters, and emails have clearly made a difference. Already 140,000 people have joined us in demanding impeachment hearings for Vice President Dick Cheney by signing up at WexlerWantsHearings.com.

The power of these combined voices are already shaking up the established order on Capitol Hill and throughout the mainstream media:

This week, the Miami Herald printed an article on our efforts that was syndicated in papers across the country, including the Detroit Free Press, Philadelphia Inquirer, Fort Worth Telegram, Contra Costa Times, Sacramento Bee, Houston Chronicle, Chicago Tribune, NC News & Observer, and others. (Click HERE to read the article.)

In addition, CBS4 in Miami became the first station we know of to run a television segment about the call for hearings. Video of that can be found HERE.)

Perhaps most importantly, just this morning the Philadelphia Inquirer courageously ran the full editorial I drafted along with my fellow Judiciary Committee members Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) and Rep. Tammy Baldwin (R-WI). (View it HERE .) Congratulations to the Inquirer for their willingness to publish a viewpoint that is so widely held by Americans – yet one that other leading national newspapers refused to publish.

We have come so far in just a few weeks. No longer can the mainstream media ignore our efforts and dismiss this cause as only part of the fringe left.

Already we are seeing tangible results from our combined effort. As you already know, Congress is well behind the American people on this issue. This is an uphill battle, but it's one that has to be fought. It should not be the whole agenda, but it needs be *on* the agenda.

When Congress reconvenes in January, I plan to present a list to my Judiciary Committee colleagues of every single person that signed up at WexlerWantsHearings.com. I will go to more of my colleagues and ask them to join a letter in support of hearings. We will build on the momentum you have given us.

Last week, I spent an hour on Blog Talk Radio outlining thoughts and answering questions in regards to this work. So many people hit their site that their servers temporarily went down. If you'd like to hear the archived audio, please click HERE.

Let's do our best to further spread the message so that list will be up to a quarter million. Please continue to blog, email friends, and insist that your family and friends sign up!

Thanks for your commitment.

Thanks Mr. Wexler!

To Ben and Michael Did you guys actually sign or do anything

Or did you just vent in barely pidgin English?

If you can't be part of the solution which is aimed at impeaching Cheney then please do the rest of the world the small courtesy of shutting up and getting out of the road. You are helping Cheney. You are citizens engaging in dumbing down the debate. You are publicly farting in lieu of speaking.  Your comments aren't touching Cheney but they are making me who is not a citizen of the United States and that doesn't know either of you wish I could be close enough to excise a physical peice of both of you.

You are making me hope that next 9-11 you and not more people more worthy of holding a right to free speech and free association will be at the centre of ground zero so your country and the world will be the better.

I apologise to other readers who may find my venting now as obnoxious as I have found yours.

I suspect this article has been posted (re-posted) by David Swanson not Robert Wexler.  Perhaps that is for the best. With Americans like these what congressional representative would give a damn what he or she said to them.

Sorry Brett...Trying to reply without my contacts in..

Not venting, just disillusioned by the state of our nation.

I apologize to all those I have offended with my improper spelling of words that I did not catch prior to posting.  Had spell check, did not use it.  Please admonish me with the political correctness staff of life so that I may once again see the light.

Yes I did vote, and no you don’t still have a chance because until America realizes that 9 knuckleheads still sit atop mount Olympus, the three stooges have control of the Whitehouse, and the pirates of the Caribbean infest the congressional buildings, the raping and pillaging of America’s wealth, jobs and self respect will continue.

Of course you could always try voting someone new into office.  How well did that work for the American voters the last few times that we tried that?

I make typing errors a lot myself

And I've no interest in political correctness.

But Michael in the world of 2007 you are one of the empowered. You currently do have a Bill of Rights enshrined into the first ten amendments of the Constitution that is your birthright if you were born in the United States.

There is no cause for despair yet. It is perfectly possible still for Bush and Cheney to both be impeached. You invoked the memory of the Independence War and of those Americans who fought against the British. The task of impeaching Cheney is far easier.

The House Judiciary Committee is the appropriate place for hearings against Cheney to proceed. And thanks to the work of Dennis Kucininch every single current Republican member on the House Judiciary Committee (of which there are 17) is on the public record - the Congressional Record - as having voted NOT to suspend debate in the House about impeaching Cheney. Congressmen Wexler and three other Democratic members of the House Judiciary Committee, Baldwin, Gutierrez, and more recently Weiner are also signed on.

4 + 17 = 21 which is a majority of the House Judiciary Committee's 40 members even without John Conyers.

There are other Democratic members of the House Judiciary Committee that were co-signatures to Kucinich's HR333 impeachment of Cheney initiative. They are likely to be very open to being persuaded to join with Wexler on calling for hearings if Wexler can show them that the people want hearings. Or if the people get in touch with them themselves.

Nancy and even Conyers if they insist on being obstructionist can be asked to resign and thrust aside by the numbers on the House Judiciary Committee if the people - the We the People People - People like you Michael, recognize that now is the time and the House Judiciary Committee is the critical forum in which to make a surge.

Not everyone gets a chance at education in life. Not everyone can be a Medical Doctor. But the Constitution is an American contract between Americans that previous generations or Americans won for the current generation often at great personal sacrifice. You know this. You have an internet connection and can read about your constitution if you choose. You can if you choose come to understand that it is the House Judiciary Committee that now has the ball on impeaching Cheney and on defending the Constitution from all enemies including the domestic ones.

That Constitution is yours Michael. Don't let Cheney deprive you of it. And don't let anyone convince you prematurely that the worst has already happened. It takes time to organise a surge and to get the system to work when the villains are in the highest places and a country is as large and a complicated as the United States with its over 100 million voters. But the process is on track. The arguments are in place. All that is needed is a surge of support for the Constitution and for those critical men and women who have taken an oath to defend it and are currently on the main battleground which is the House Judiciary Committee.

Typos alone don't bother me. But premature defeatism isn't warranted and coupled with lots of typos its like a message of panic in the battleline. And make no mistake impeachment is a political battle. And the battle is fiercest right now in the House Judiciary Committee.

Ben we are in different continents.

But send me your address and I'll give you a rain check on that bite.

Meanwhile you claim to be a medical doctor so when you act like a red neck and dumb down the debate on important issues I'm going to treat you with the respect your behavior deserves. I hope you DO treat me the same way.

Note to self: Owe Ben Marble one bite. Force location and playfulness/vindictivess of bite yet to be determined ;-)

If you get sick of requesting intercontinental bites maybe you could wade in on the impeachment of Cheney. I have no doubt you are smart enough to make a difference. But do you actually give a damn and are you engaged enough to know that you could make a difference? Do you know what the individual public positions of the House Judicial Democrats are on impeaching Cheney. They all have some form. But are you as a citizen checking the form guide?

If all one has to say is F*Ck Dick Cheney then one might as well train a parrot to do one's activism for one.

Channel that anger

Channel that anger to break-down, deconstruct, and dissipate their power.

While I agree with the sentiment (as Dick Cheney is directly responsible for the war mongering LIES that killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and maimed, injured, and displaced many more, killing thousands of American service men and women while putting them unnecessarily in harm's way, and monumental redistribution (read: legitimized misappropriation and pure theft) of hundreds of Billions of dollars from our nation's treasury), we will convince less passionate people by appealing with persuasive arguments and logic, rather than with raw emotional fury however justified.  Harness that anger by voicing your reasons for anger and outrage at Dick Cheney's completely reckless, damaging, and purposeful mean-spirited misleadership.

Don't become as reptilian, cold-blooded, and reactionary as the base criminal Vice President who worked to threaten, steamroll, and out any upright public servant who dared to oppose his criminal enterprise. We all know that Scooter Libby didn't out Valerie Plame and associated CIA brass plate operations countering nuclear non-proliferation in Iran without receiving direct orders from his boss, Mr. Dick Cheney.  Most of the evidence of the Veeps felonies may be classified beyond the reach of FOIA requests, but there is plenty of indictment worthy evidence already in the public domain.  One need only read the Articles for Impeachment to realize that the VP could be impeached on his own televised speeches and appearances without further testimony.  Dick just lied and continues to lie and mislead in every public appearance.

Repeating emotion laden expletives won't convince anybody new to the cause of impeachment.  As you and most readers of opednews know, the mainstream media is responsible for suppressing and omitting the most important issues and facts that challenge our Constitutional republic, but each day more and more people discover new facts and fresh perspective from alternative news sources and media dragged into spreading breaking news that can't be suppressed and ignored any longer without further loss of credibility among our less curious, but otherwise good-hearted citizens.

The numbers supporting impeachment will grow rapidly as soon as the media is forced to report on the substantive issue raised by the Articles of Impeachment being presented.  Everyone who sees or hears the case laid out will see that impeachment should have been exercised long ago.

Rob was Right to Flag This

Rob was Right to Flag This...

"Cheney" is about THE most offensive and disgusting word in the English language these days.

I like to use it to describe bowel movements: "I gotta go take a Cheney."

Can also be used as colorful insult: "Go Cheney yourself!"

"My car slid off the road, now it's totally Cheney'd!"

Seriously, most of the civilized world holds this deluded and dangerous old creep in complete and utter contempt. And rightfully so.

His approval numbers in the US are under 10... and that's NOT percent, that's people!

The sooner someone steps up - and slaps his fat keister back to hell where it belongs - the better for ALL concerned.

Many thanks to Wexler, and everyone else involved, for staying on message with this issue. The first step this nation needs to take to regaining ANY respect in the world is to take down (and prosecute) the "persons" who were responsible for dragging us into the cheney in the first place.

It cannot happen too soon.

Don't Hold your breath

If any American, excuse me, castrated male American thinks thant anyone in this Admainistration will be held accountable for thier actions needs to increase thier meds.

You and I jwalk and we get Rodney King treatment, they use the Constitution and the Bill of Rights for tolit paper and nothing happens.

The American sprit, what drove this country to defeat the British, has been castrated to make sure men of character and integrity genuflect to thier softer side and are unable to rise to fight evil in any form, including Cheney.

truthtruffleBetween jobs, passions are motorcycles, music, and green-tech

Um, way to give up?

I disagree, I think we got to this point because frankly, people got too busy in their own lives, and forgot that there has to be come civil civic participation for the whole process to work effectively. That's not to say we didn't have a little help in the form of some deliberate misdirection, and then people screwing with the voting system, so forth and so on, these guys have always had as their primary agenda a move to gain control of the tax system and exploit it to their material benefit, as well as utilizing the military to also enhance their fortunes, it's what they do.

But, the People are not without recourse. Taking issue with walking conflicts of interest like Cheney is the civic duty of anyone calling themselves an American who also happens to read the paper on a regular basis and kind of understands what they're doing, here, and might take exception to it.

Why pick on Uncle Dick? Simple. Dick Cheney, former CEO of Halliburton, became our V.P. in 2000 under Bush. K. So far, no problem. NOW for the problem, the conflict of interest problem: He kept recieiving compensation from Halliburton up until 2006. Money. From his former company. That went to Iraq and raked it in with a bulldozer. Literally.

I call it a hostile corporate takeover. But, call it what you want, they did it, and there it is. So, here we are, facing 3 trillion in new debt and an administration that's basically daring anyone to do anything about it. Well, we can, it's called 'impeachment', and you support that by contacting your Congressman, signing one of the petitions floating around out there, including Wexler's, and there's local citizens' committees trying to promote this, too, ask around where you live, or try: http://www.impeachbush.org which is now at 986k and counting. Nancy 'impeachment is off the table' was a disappointment, and the war supporters are of course adamantly against such an action, but this really does come down to a question of whether we are governed by corporate interests run amok, or by our OWN Constitution. If the People en masse will it, Bush and Cheney and the rest of these guys can be walked out the door, sans keys. But, it's got to be a majority, not just a vocal minority. Get started!

Regarding my comment above

Regarding my letter referenced above, is it really necessary to hold hearings at this stage.  Do you not know enough to submit articles of impeachment and allow the impeachment process to sort out the facts and offer them into evidence.  Many books, articles, commentaries, news reports, documentaries have already been offered into the public record for impeachement to go forward.  Any member of the House who can read and sign his or her name can enter artilces of impeachment and offer evidence to make most of these charges stick.  If you can't get the hearings going, you can move forward anyway.  Please do.

Is it really necessary to hold impeachment hearings at

this stage? I wondered this too.

But it makes sense if you consider that holding hearings will inevitably result in focussing the minds of more Americans on the charges and on the evidence behind those charges. Doing that in the House Judiciary Committee creates something that the media would report on perhaps initially because it looks like a stoush but as the substance of the charges are discussed more and more Americans will turn their minds towards the substance.

At the moment it is too easy for the media to figure well Pelosi has said impeachment isn't happening and Conyers is still sounding like he's following her line, so it isn't going to happen. The media is made up of journos that write for a living. They aren't necessarily any better at reading the mood of the population or picking up subtle shifts and trends early than other members of the public.

No American wants to be disenfranchised from their own Constitution. It is in the interests on Americans off all political parties to want the Oath of Office taken by the President and Vice President to be something that those office holders are held too.

The logic of the case for impeaching Cheney and Bush is to me (especially in the case of Bush) already very clear. Prosecutors have to think there is enough of a case or they don't even bother. But for prosecutors to make a case they have to make that case to people that weren't previously listening and to have those people listen and then see that yes the case is there.

Hearings are part of the essential due process. Hearings are the means by which people see that this is not about mere party politics but is about deep and important principle.

BTW. I read you 2005 letter to the House Judiciary Committee. Thanks for being one of those Americans that gives a damn.

Cheney is great

I would rather be around Cheney than the leftist group that only produces negatives. Wexler is a leftist, who needs some issue for attention. Check his voting record.  Awful & a socialist, who has done zero for the benefit of U.S. Citizens. He just likes to spend taxpayers money & is for raising taxes.

You have got to be kidding!

Wexler, one of those tax and spend liberals, hey?

You're either mistaken or deluded. You see, taxes are how free people invest in their society. In that light Wexler would be a tax and invest liberal, as opposed to a steal and waste fascist like Vice President Cheney. That's correct, steal and waste.

Cheney, and his acolyte Dubya are the assholes who came up with the idea of selling our grandchildren to China to buy a criminally illegal, immoral and increasingly vain war, foisted on us under false pretenses.

To do what they are doing is the ultimate taxation without representation, and if you can't see it, lay off the LSD.
